What do "Teh Gays" have to do with this? are VIP gay?

Sorry, haven't clicked on the link, but I don't think I need to.. I don't think homophobia has any reason for the C&D here..

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

no, it has nothing to do with it. its just a catchy title. and yes, VIP are a gay rap trio.

Actually, VH were unwittingly quite pro-gay for a time when they had closeted Republican queer Gary Cherone as their lead singer.

dontomassino, Monday, 24 January 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

What the huh? First I've heard about Gary's view of life there.

The following photo came up in a Google image search for "gary cherone" (speficially, some aesthetically questionable CD cover I was looking for) (but I digress):

Gay Hip-Hop Group “V.I.P.” has received notice that they are being targeted for a lawsuit by non other then the 80’s rock icon Van Halen.

V.I.P.’s record label, Collision/Collider, was served with papers from Van Halen’s lawyers: King, Holms, Paterno & Berliner, LLP; saying that they were in violation of a service mark patent:"…unfair competition, misappropriation of commercial identity …" over the cover of V.I.P.’s new "Mad Coke E.P."

The cover depicts an Art Deco style lettering similar to many 80’s metal bands.

When asked if he thought the logo looked significantly like the Van Halen logo Ryan replied; “We didn’t think it looked more like Van Halen then any other 80s glam group. We wouldn’t be getting sued if the first letter wasn’t a "V".

Jonny Makeup, one of the three MC’s in V.I.P., said "I don’t know what to make of all this, I’m just a coalminer’s daughter![laughter..] I don’t think this would be happening if we weren’t quarreling lovers. [laughter..] The CD has only been out for a month, how did they even think that was going to impact them?"

V.I.P. Made its start a little over a year ago with rapid promotion through the hipster community. Their first show landed them a record deal with Spacefoundation and Collision/Collider labels, their third show landed them at the famous Trocadero Theater in Philadelphia with girl rappers "Fannypack." Since then the boys have been on everyone’s wish list with their flamboyant display of skills and style.

cute press release. jonny really does laugh that much. i think he's got one of the most recognizable voices in town.

Really?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oh they're being jokey with that. but its hard to tell.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

They should have just asked permission. As I recall, Tone Loc only paid a couple of hundred bucks - a flat fee - to sample "Jamie's Cryin'" for "Wild Thing." I'm sure some kind of equitable arrangement could have been reached.

Faggots were originally made with pig's liver and offal
Faggots are now made from pork liver and pork
Fans have published the Good Faggot Guide
They displayed their fanaticism for the delicacy during quizzes, role-plays and mock commercials.

this situation reminded me of a lawsuit van halen encountered in the 90s with a former professor of mine.

the front and back photographs are by david graham and were used without permission by the designers. DG had the owners of both homes sign a release form, allowing him to use the images in his book, "only in america."

the package designer had a copy of the book and used the image. not only were they sued by DG, but by the people who owned the homes. [one of the families no longer resided there, oddly enough] court ruled in favor of DG & the families.

I'd seen that pic on the live album a thousand times, but this is the first I've ever actually paid attention to it. What a great picture.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, its pretty amazing. ditto for the back image, which IIRC is this:
