Am I the only one who's finding it kinda meh the first time through?

Overbite (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 24 January 2005 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard it, but is Joe Preston on this record? I hear he's playing with them live lately.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 24 January 2005 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard rumors to that effect. If he is, it sure doesn't sound like it. I mean, the record is *fine*, just no great leaps forward. I'll still totally see them live when they come.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 24 January 2005 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it! Especially how loud it is.

It Might Not Make Me Feel Like God's Teabag, But The New High On Fire Deserves Its Own Thread, Doesn't It?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 24 January 2005 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

sound-wise, it's a big leap forward. the last album sounded like crap.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 24 January 2005 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with you there. And according to relapse.com, Ol' Joe Preston does, indeed, play bass on this. It really has the makings of a classic...so why isn't it?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 24 January 2005 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, so track 7 rules. But even it took me more than three spins to really appreciate. When I first heard "Blood From Zion" way back when, I couldn't move. I mean, it's fuckin' heaviness actually incapacitated me. It RULED.

Maybe I need to listen to this new one in the car, despite how much I was looking forward to listening to Too Fast For Love on the drive in to work in the morning.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 24 January 2005 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
this whole record rules. listen again and this time do it right!

should we discuss om "variations on a theme" here? om being chris hakius and al cisneros of sleep doing long, mantric doom bass/drums duets. and it's good - especially the second half - but it sounds sort of like "sleep's holy mountain" without any real sense of song structure.

it's on holy mountain records! c'mon!

Sounds good to me already!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 February 2005 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I kept my neighbors up really late listening to this record last night. The title track slays.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 February 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

the first three songs are so utterly mindblowing that i've not listened to much past them, but man alive it's awesome!

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 18 February 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone heard the OM record, looks ULTIMATE on paper, 3 long songs, bass and drums!!!

ddb (ddb), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, that OM website rules!...it's so 1996!

ddb (ddb), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I would really like this

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.headheritage.com/wsym/

as of right now you can listen to the whole OM record in realaudio at that address (i've already seen it around on SLSK, too).

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard an OM track on Brian Turner's radio show the other day -- Stephen O'Malley from Khanate/SunnO))) was the guest DJ. Great show, the OM song really stood out.

Anyway, the HOF album is killing me. I understand why people are kinda meh about it, on the surface it's pretty plain, but I really think it's a subtle creeper of an album. It kicked my ass pretty hard about the 7th time I listened. The sound is great, guitars/drums sit well in the mix, I love how the whole album's mixed. The guitar work is burning. I think it's actually the best album I've heard this year. I'm not exaggerating.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 21 February 2005 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think it's meh. I love it.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 21 February 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Same here!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 February 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

ditto - see upthread!

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Monday, 21 February 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to write a piece on this band Kylesa, who are touring with High On Fire, and I really like their new album too.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 21 February 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Kylesa were really good when I saw them open for HOF. When does the new album (I just got the self titled one with a mummy wrapped dude on the front) drop?

adam (adam), Monday, 21 February 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

March 22nd.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 21 February 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool.

adam (adam), Monday, 21 February 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
listened to this tonight. still fucking brilliant and catchy, fine riffs abound.

video for "devilution" = low rent tribute to jean rollin and maybe moctezuma, grrrrreat.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

never dropped acid, picked it up a couple times tho... (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:04 (seventeen years ago)

DitC hits the highest highs, but BBW is higher all the way through. I think BBW will end up in my top 3.

bendy, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:44 (seventeen years ago)

right now it's no. 4 for me..."anointing of seer" is a motherfucker

never dropped acid, picked it up a couple times tho... (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 07:08 (seventeen years ago)

DitC is more consistent (and BBW was consistent) but BBW had Devilution which was a BIG highpoint.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 07:24 (seventeen years ago)

i heard "rumours of war" on their myspace page, and i was a bit less than impressed, but i'll give DitC a listen right now...

seppuku toothbrush (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 07:56 (seventeen years ago)

huh. i'd put art of self defense on a best of the ohies list, but i dunno if anything else'd make the cut. maybe BBW

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

I think BBW is awe-inspiring, and I thought so from the first listen
