Have not heard any yet myself.

I've never quite liked his solo stuff as much as Sea and Cake or the Prekop disc.

I've heard it. It's not bad. Not much of a departure from his previous releases.

He's a good nominee for best supporting actor.

i've not heard any of his previous solo stuff and i'm not a huge fan of The Sea and Cake, but i'm really loving this one. i'm not sure why it's drawn me in so much, but it has this sort of elegant simplicity thats missing from a lot of modern singer/songwriter stuff. i guess this one just really reminds me of Nick Drake, rather than reminding me of someone trying too hard to be Nick Drake.

I do think it's maybe a little more understated than Three, which had more bombastic horns and female backup vocals. The rich orchestration is still present but not as much.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 24 January 2005 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

it's out on soulseek.

Three has been one of my very favourite albums for some time. This one is as good, maybe a little less so, but I definitely enjoy it. His first three albums are not as good; White Sky has some gorgeous moments, as does In The Sun, but they aren't as consistent.

Overall, he's one of my favourite pop songwriters and arrangers working today. Probably my favourite out of the Sea-and-Cake nexus as well, though I enjoy the other projects.

I heard a track on the radio the other day and was knocked out by it. [I wish I could remember which damn radio station was playing such top music.]

I have it--I think it's pretty great. I didn't like Three at all, but loved White Sky and Gerroa Songs, and to me it sounds like a return to the slightly more contemplative thing he had going on. The guitar playing is great too--he has a great guitar sound, it has the swing of Sea and Cake but often something a little more punchy about it too (like on "Another Piece of Mind").

I'm definitely going to pick it up when it's released. He is one of my favorites too, although I think it has something to do with his being sort of an underdog. Like he's really good, but not so genius that you can't identify with him. Or somehing.

i absolutely love three. it's one of my favorite albums of the past few years. i'd never much considered him until i saw him open for the new pornographers (or maybe imperial teen?) at the abbey pub a couple years agowhere he did songs from three almost exclusively. first listen was underwhelming, but has since opened up for me. i hink i really missed the above mentioned horns and backing vocals (by Kelly Hogan and Nora O'Connor!) on this. not cuz the album sux, but only because his songwriting/playing has a subtlty that really takes off when augmented as such.

also, sof'boy has been absolutely on fire with hilarity lately.
