so here it is. Inspried by Mr. Seward's quest to find new music noone talks about tonight I saw a band that blew me away, and I'd never heard even a slight mention of them before. Firstly let me start, Kyp's solo show was just him and a guitar. Majorly nice guy, people definitely turned out to see him, but his vocals were like a cross between devendra and creed. annoyingly breathy at times, annoyingly shrill at others. very grating and not in a quirky oh this is fun way. in a jesus make it stop way. but then again, i've never been a TVOTR fan. then a band I'd heard of a few times came on. Dragons of Zinth. I'd say they were hit or miss. some songs were cool, but their show was really loose, in a way that didn't suit them. they needed to tighten up, use less distortion on their vocals, and I think they have a lot of potential. BUT THEN, we decided to stay for the final band, a band called "stars like fleas" (not wild about the name....so out come 7 people, with every possible instrument under the sun (including laptop). I'm skeptical. they start, within 30 seconds I knew i was seeing something incredible. their entire set was absolutely phenomenal. I bought the CD, all my friends with me were equally amazed. I bought the CD, and while it's not QUITE the same as seeing them live, it's still very cool and captures a lot of great free jazz moments. tons of neat blips and bleeps. 3 kinds of wind instruments. banjo. a uke. guitars. keyboards. nice vocals (not the strength). and INCREDIBLE drums. i was truly impressed. I'm still processing the CD but if anyone gets a chance to see them DO. they are playing at tonic on Feb 11th.

this was just him solo. i feel bad ragging on it. he's such a nice guy. but it just sounded so bad and , borderline righteous

ok. so the album is not nearly as good as the live show. it's good, but NOTHING compared to seeing them live. if you can see them live. it's amazing. done.

Did they use a live drummer? Because I really don't think the drum machine does anything for them.

Otherwise it actually reminds me a little of Like Moving Insects.

yeah, you know what. the recordings DO NOT do them justice. (i'm listening more, not disapointed I bought it, but disappointed that it's just nothing like their live show)....their drummer was one of the best parts of the show. i mean, he was really really inredible. he made new sounds from his drum kit i'd never heard before. i guess my rec, just see them live if you are in NY. i don't think they tour/play much. but they were really awesome to see

"I've pumped your stomach" is pretty cool.

where was the show?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, just imagine them recreating these sounds live, in a small intimate setting. it was really cool. the drummer even made noises just whipping his brushes in the air and he was tapping all over shit in the room. the horns were great too. i guess they are just really a great live band. the cd isn't bad though.

the show was at the Glass House, on south 1st and Kent. kind of a weird art space where they cook all this food for you and let you draw on the canvas table. very hippy dippy , but in a good way. the space is hard to find though. behind an unmarked door. only says the number, spray painted. 38

well i don't konw what their deal is, I just know when I told the guy nice show, he said they were playing NYC on feb 11th at Tonic. other than that I know nothing.

ps. the glass house was cool. i saw that grizzly bear was playing there soon , (as many of you have seen from my posts here, a band i like a bunch lately). they are playing with that dragons of zinth band soon feb 13th I believe, they seem to do a lot of sunday shows at the space . DOZ are very interesting band as well--worth checking out. just needed to tighten up a bit. i think seeing any band in the space is kinda worth it. it's small, there's free food. it's comfortable. worth checking out.
