Buffy Sainte-Maire - Illuminations. Folk music + Buchla synth + french sounding name.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

you might dig the trippier parts of that
Linda perhacs Parallelograms lp

I second the nomination of Illuminations, what a great record.

But if French-ness is key, go directly to:

Areski et Brigitte Fontaine "Fontaine 4" lp
or really lots of the 60s Brigitee Fontaine catalogue, she's rad.
There's also a cool femme-voxed Euro psych band called Les Alpes that you might dig.

catherine ribeiro and alpes?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, yeah, that's the one I meant, thanks. Sorry for the misspellingz above too.

Also: my fave acoustic + French lp has got to be Francoise Hardy's "La Question", it doesn't have trippy electronic squelches, but it does have really great songs, well sung, and lovely understated 60s production.

Does Eliza Carthy's Red Rice fit into this category?

It's got a lot of folk and trad acoustic stuff plus electronic squelching galore. Guitar, yes, but also fiddle and accordion.

The Mad Puffin, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

telefon tel aviv?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

not really, I just like saying the name. besides their 2002 (2003?) album still gets heavy rotation in my ears.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

but, Muraille is a guy! granted, French.
same with Davide Balula, whose lovely Pellicule first came to mind when i saw the subj.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete Shelley's "Homosapien" is like that, all synth and drum machine with a shimmering 12-string on top. At least the single is like that; never heard the whole LP (always been curious).

('Course, Pete is neither French nor a girl - the only French music I like is from Quebec.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

not French, but how about:
