So this Festival is doing the rounds in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. I mean the Residents haven't toured here in DECADES. I haven't kept up to date with a lot since Freakshow, but love Commercial Album and Duck Stab particularly.

Anyone tell me what I can expect from Chicks On Speed, Pan Sonic, Sunn o))) and Black Dice live?

I have Creature Comforts and a burn of Beaches and Canyons by Black Dice, but somehow am not expecting the show to, um, replicate the albums.

I've seen Sunn 0))), Black Dice (3 times), and Pan Sonic live.

-Sunn 0))) = droooooooooooooone, guys in robes, smoke. I nodded off a few times
-Pan Sonic = loud, not that different from their recorded stuff, computer graphics projected behind them
-Black Dice = the Grateful Dead "Space" mode meets acid house the first time I saw them, endless tension without release the second time I saw them, and excellent musique concrete when I saw them in NY this summer (sorry, I thought they were better than Animal Collective that night, despite all the "transcendent performance" talk from others at the show

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF THE RESIDENTS STILL PLAY!?!?!?!?!?! OMG!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, they still play and confuse, delight and everything!

Thanks Jeff, I think it's going to be an interesting afternoon/evening.

etc, Thursday, 27 January 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

this looks fun, although it will be hard for any of them to top last years' whitehouse shows

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 27 January 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

lightning bolt? hope so - that would be awesome.

yeah, I heard whitehouse were pretty brutal last year.

PiersT, Thursday, 27 January 2005 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That's like, my nightmare come to life. Sunn0))) must be the worst 45 minutes I have ever spent... ever.

Cameron (raygun), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm preparing for the worst of the worst and the best of the worst.

PiersT, Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW, the new Residents album features the sounds of whales and humans mating (albeit not with each other) and vocals that sound like Gollum.

Cameron (raygun), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I think my band may be getting booked for a 'WIM' show in Newcastle.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

no Lightning Bolt though, booo!

Oren Ambrachi is apparently going to guest with Sunn O)))))). I wonder if he'll wear a cloak.

haitch (haitch), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if i'll bother this year. col, you up for something?

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

haitch (haitch), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

he does guitar with his mouth lmao mint (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead C!!!!!!!

I'll be annoyed if them, Pan Sonic, Residents and Sun 0))) are overlapping.

So I guess the Saturday. Perhaps I should take my paid vacation time for this.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's a little expensive for us gaz? Rach wanted to go, for the Chix ya know.

thee music mole, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
wow, Sunn O))) were shatteringly loud and bassy. I should've laid down on the wooden floor like some people did on Saturday night, good vibrations apparently!

haitch 2: special low productivity version (haitch), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't really enjoy what i saw to be honest. sunn o))) were more intriguing than particularly thrilling to listen to. wish i hadn't missed the dead c.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i ain't going. $85. and i don't really care.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Just came home from the Sydney show. Sunn o))) were great. I was about to go home when my friends left after The Residents finished (who were totally enjoyable but not amazing). But then I figured I check out Sunn o))) by myself and just sat on the ground and zoned out completley for close to an hour. Really meditative and relaxing for what was a colossal sound!

-the-night-watch- (-the-night-watch-), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost
Yeah I'm not sure the night was worth $85 tho. If I hadn't stuck around I may have regretted it.
