I just got the new album and I think it's fantastic... but it's been getting wildly various reviews. What do you think, especially in relation to Source Tags and Codes.

Sub-question: Would a 10.0 (ST&C) to a 4.0 (WA) be the lowest drop in Pitchfork history? Discuss.

Cameron (raygun), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I didn't listen to the people to told me not to buy it. I am slightly disappointed, but I don't think it deserves press as bad as it's been getting. I do enjoy it. I'd give it a 7.2. Maybe 7.1.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a stretch of songs, three through six, that I think rival anything the band's done. I'm undecided on the rest, though nothing immediately grabs me.

Bruce S. Urquhart (BanjoMania), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Cameron, if you care to, please explain its fantasticness. What does this album sound like? As far as I'm concerned the critical reception isn't anything to go by. ST&C was an album acclaimed by people with mediocre expectations (Pitchfork also gave Emergency & I a 10.0 and are in general (except for Dominique Leone) in a bit over their heads IMHO) so I have a hard time taking seriously giving the impression of a gigantic drop-off from hype they seriously over-inflated.

Hawley Griffin, Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I think it's just a logical evolution for the band. Some people have complained that it thinks it's a concept album when it's not; but really, it's all very intertwined and connected. It looses a bit of the epic feel of ST&C, but that may be for the best for this specific record. The lyrics may be a little bit off, but as Bruce said, songs 3 to 6 are on par if not above with stuff like "Relative Ways", and live they sound even better.

Cameron (raygun), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"and you will know us by the trail of roadies righting our amps and mic stands between each song"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i just got through with my second listen to this album, and i pretty much have to put myself in the "enjoying it, but slightly disappointed" camp. there are some moments that i really, really like... "Will You Smile Again?", "Caterwaul", and "A Classic Arts Showcase" spring immediately to mind. some of the transitions between songs are fantastic, while others are downright awkward and cringe-inducing. i've never been a huge fan of this band lyrically, i've always listened more for the music. in P-fork terms, i'd give this one about a 7.2-7.3.

as far as the biggest drop in score, i don't remember what score A Thousand Leaves got, but i'm sure from it to NYC Ghosts & Flowers' 0.0 was probably a bigger one.

jonviachicago, Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the album has been getting great reviews, mickey. pitchfork is one of the few negative ones i've seen. i still think the album is terrible.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Metacritic has plenty of awful ones.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

lead review in entertainment weekly (a-), prominent review in rolling stone (3.5 stars), prominent review in tracks. that's nothing to scoff at.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

for once, Pfork has it almost right...

i all but agree with thier review. BUT, that said, i still bought the album after hearing the leaked version, i had to know if it was meant to sound like that or not.
sadly, it was.

but, there's still some gems in there. just not as many of them. and the ones that are good, aren't quite as good as before...

but, i'll still go see em live.

Listening to this album after a really long time and like that, while the bombast is toned down, a certain devilish charm remains. Definitely a grower.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

"Worlds Apart," "Caterwaul" and "Let It Dive" are pretty terrific.

TIME FOR A LONG OVERDUE CRITICAL REAPPRAISAL

this album is fucking brilliant.

Trail of Dead is one of thousands of cheesy death metal acts (Roberto Spiralli), Thursday, 20 November 2008 12:10 (seventeen years ago)

Fucking brilliant? No.
A solid album that is under-appreciated? Yes.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 20 November 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

well, that's a step in the right direction at least. i feel like this got a hard time when it was released because people were expecting a lot of things after Source Tags and Elena's Tomb and Worlds Apart was not amongst those expectations. also, they were a singularly humourless band up to that point, so the injection of fun was maybe a bit jarring. it was a really strange album to attempt, so the fact that they pulled it off so well gets overlooked.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 July 2009 08:14 (sixteen years ago)

this is a really pretty good album

Michael Philip Philip Philip philip a hoy hoy (country matters), Thursday, 23 July 2009 08:43 (sixteen years ago)

Seconded. It got some harsh reviews when it was released, but it has aged quite well. Their new album i also pretty rad.

Marty Innerlogic, Thursday, 23 July 2009 09:38 (sixteen years ago)

^^^this also, "Luna Park" is pretty much my song of the year at this point, which is weird because it's pretty much the only song no review has really singled out. I think it's absolutely tremendous, a delirious race to the line masquerading as a piano ballad

Michael Philip Philip Philip philip a hoy hoy (country matters), Thursday, 23 July 2009 09:40 (sixteen years ago)

their best album by a mile

yes, but maybe not a mile

I have IX as their second best btw, that's weird

the big poll/thing we did recently was extremely fun, obv

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 08:54 (eight years ago)

Happened to just read they're going to tour (well at least festivals) next year playing ST&C in full. Their best album, that :)

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 08:56 (eight years ago)

again? i saw them do that a few years ago. it was great but i think my favorite part was "caterwaul" in the encore

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 16:03 (eight years ago)

i think century of self and tao of the dead might both be better than worlds apart but the ranking shifts constantly

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 16:03 (eight years ago)

worlds apart sometimes feels a little... underwritten in parts to me? it may just be incapable of surprising me anymore bc i listened to it constantly in hs

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 17:00 (eight years ago)

Surprised & endeared that this thread bump actually got some responses. I feel like they've been thrown to the wayside & forgotten. Happy to hear they're still touring, was just thinking about that.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 17:53 (eight years ago)

wait i’m listening to tao of dead now and it’s definitely the best

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 17:57 (eight years ago)

agreed. looks fantastic on LP as well.

I remember listening to the World's Apart leak on my first days of university and having absolutely no idea what to make of it

Simon H., Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:01 (eight years ago)

I remember thinking "The Rest Will Follow" was an instant classic, a song that felt like it was always there, familiar. Like it had been plucked from the ether. I love the production on this album, everything from the drums, the sound effects, the strings, and the dry vocals mixed really high. That song is so so thrilling, imo more so than anything on ST&C.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:07 (eight years ago)

when i heard worlds apart i thought "oh, they're the smashing pumpkins now, awesome"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:18 (eight years ago)

ha, exactly! he sounds just like Billy on Worlds Apart.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:26 (eight years ago)

and iirc that observation was shared by many of the critics who panned the record

flappy bird, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:27 (eight years ago)

who knows what it is with me and dudes who have extremely nasal voices and can only sorta sing

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:32 (eight years ago)

at least in the case of corgan/keely imo they come up with kinda oblique and unusual vocal melodies that are still really lovely (i say this with "let it dive" stuck in my head)

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:33 (eight years ago)

jason reece sounding kinda like ian mackaye prob prepared me to love fugazi

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:39 (eight years ago)

they're both great melody writers. there are lots of beautiful vocal flourishes on Worlds Apart - like the way he sings "comfortable" the second time in the first chorus of "A Classic Arts Showcase." or the ferocity at the end of "Worlds Apart." he's very tuneful

xp Reece is also a great melody writer, cf. chorus of "Caterwaul"

flappy bird, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:41 (eight years ago)

and "The Summer of '91" - which is probably the most MCIS-esque song on the record, i.e. the bare piano & dry vocals in the beginning that builds into this epic thing

flappy bird, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:42 (eight years ago)

xp Reece is also a great melody writer, cf. chorus of "Caterwaul"

fuckin hell yeah he is. cf. my favorite trail of dead song, "ebb away"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:44 (eight years ago)

wish I had a list of Reece's songs. I suspect that he is proportionally overrepresented on my TOD CD-80 I did a short while ago

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:48 (eight years ago)

he definitely came up with 'luna park', which is a preposterously great bit of songwriting

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:49 (eight years ago)

Neil Busch, too. "Baudelaire" is one of my favorites. Very few rock songs bring you to the edge of a cliff like that one.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:52 (eight years ago)

I miss having Neil Busch in the band for sure, he was their Lee Ranaldo

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:07 (eight years ago)

I still say it was the cooper temple clause, another angst-ridden band with a terrible name, dodgy vocalist, stupidly ambitious kinda-breaktrough album, nicked riffs from Sonic Youth, and whose hype cycle was one album long. of course the main difference is they called it quits.

Simon H., Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:17 (eight years ago)

I thought they were better back when they were trying to be grandiose Sonic Youth.

Evan, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:44 (eight years ago)

oh my god the cooper temple clause were like my favourite band when i was 17 OF COURSE

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:46 (eight years ago)

their second album was still pretty good and possibly even more ambitious than the debut. their third album is one of the worst records ever made

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:47 (eight years ago)

Ha yeah CTC actually makes sense!

lol xp

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:47 (eight years ago)

the third album has a few good songs but the label mangled the track selection, which inspired its title. the b-sides (some of which are basically impossible to find online in decent quality) are, by and large, much more inspired.

Simon H., Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:49 (eight years ago)

the second album was the ambitious one I had in mind. a real kitchen-sink record.

Simon H., Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:50 (eight years ago)

god dammit i am listening to 'digital observations' for the first time in ten years

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:51 (eight years ago)

first album is notable for 'did you miss me' and 'murder song' and the rest idk i mean those are the only two i've listened to in ten years until now (see previous post)

Cardi Acs (imago), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:52 (eight years ago)

the first album has some great songs but the angst is just so extra and the production is bizarre

Simon H., Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:56 (eight years ago)

imago, Saturday, 19 December 2020 19:52 (five years ago)

this was their reward

"Let It Dive" was featured in the EA Sports video game MVP Baseball 2005. "Will You Smile Again?" was the emotional charge in a scene to end of 7th episode titled "Hurts" of The Shield in season 4. It also appears in the Codemasters video game Colin McRae: Dirt 2 and the 2005 movie Goal!

in retrospect making your potential breakout single a very bad song that directly references 9/11 and Cribs not such a hot idea

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 December 2020 20:04 (five years ago)

as I keep saying though, Worlds Apart is an obviously v good album - admitting you love So Divided is the galaxy-brain move

imago, Saturday, 19 December 2020 20:10 (five years ago)

and in fact, as was discovered when we polled them, they've never done an album that isn't good

it predates "best of you" by at least two years!

woulda been funny if trail of dead pulled a killing joke on them

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 December 2020 20:21 (five years ago)

god there are so many segues on this thing, I swear it's half segues

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 December 2020 20:22 (five years ago)

every time I revisit this I do find the second half mostly a slog. "a classic art showcase" is a not great rock song stapled onto a kinda boring string part. I don't really get "the best".

"lost city of refuge" is one of their best songs though

if I were managing them I would have been extremely direct with them during this period lol

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 December 2020 20:31 (five years ago)

I don't like this album because it's the first album where they noticeably shifted away from their Sonic Youth / Unwound influences and to me it's so angsty in a way where it makes their older stuff sound more tasteful and mature in comparison. Last thing I loved by them was Secret of Elena's Tomb.

Evan, Saturday, 19 December 2020 21:58 (five years ago)

If I’m not mistaken this album came with a bonus dvd of them touring and there was a scene where I think they were at some festival trying to bum music gear so they could play and other bands were wary of loaning because of their destructive set tendencies.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Saturday, 19 December 2020 22:50 (five years ago)

they noticeably shifted away from their Sonic Youth / Unwound influences

yeah their pivot to (purposely?) sound more mainstream is closer to...like the gothy end of Blink-182 lol

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 December 2020 23:10 (five years ago)

two years pass...

Not sure if Simon still posts here but anyway I didn't mean "mainstream" - more that it was like their collective influences completely changed suddenly; as if all the members got replaced by people with totally different musical backgrounds who were still tasked with making their own idea of "trail of dead" records.

But his face would not turn into hot Kirby (Evan), Monday, 24 April 2023 20:08 (three years ago)

It's worth hearing their later albums. The influences you like fluctuate, but they're never too far away

imago, Monday, 24 April 2023 20:31 (three years ago)

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 24 April 2023 20:33 (three years ago)

One thing I'm struck by is how consistent they've been. All their albums are at least quite good.
