Has anyone heard this? I never buy dance compilations, but this sounds wildly appealing. Anyone?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

its as good as everyone says it is.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks pretty ace, based on Mark R's review.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

a fair bit of chat here about it.

Optimo

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 27 January 2005 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

You should buy dance compilations.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 27 January 2005 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, I know, I didn't mean to sound condescending when I said that. I just haven't been wholly down with the DFA scene, and that seems to be what's hot right now.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 27 January 2005 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the deal with this?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 27 January 2005 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a cd put together by the people that run Optimo. Optimo is a club in Glasgow that would probably be awesome if it wasn't full of crap haircuts and hipsters. It will be in Edinburgh on Feb 5th, where we have fewer crap haircuts and hipsters. I will be in attendance.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

See also the 'kill th dj section at' - http://www.optimo.co.uk/

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the crap hipsters and haircuts.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 January 2005 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Hang on a minute, btw. Is Glasgow now officially the poncey cousin of the down to earth capital?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 January 2005 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

that would probably be awesome if it wasn't full of crap haircuts and hipsters

zzzzzzz - what a cliche! i am there every week and i can assure you that this is absolute bollocks.

stirmonster, Thursday, 27 January 2005 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd rather crap haircuts and hipsters than jaded whining any day of the week.

I look forward to this coming into work, there are people asking about getting it on vinyl almost daily.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 January 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know when will the vinyl be available in glasgow?

Roy, Thursday, 27 January 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Optimo news section says "the vinyl will follow soon afterwards but we're not 100% sure when - as soon as we know, it will be up here".

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 January 2005 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

crap haircuts + hipters

vs.

rugby shirts + yahs.

easiest. choice. ever.

danny boy (danny boy), Thursday, 27 January 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

that would probably be awesome if it wasn't full of crap haircuts and hipsters

i actually saw ONE (crap haircut) last week in fact and got quite a shock! it was probably someone who reads the kind of rubbish hmm peddles about the club and decided to dress up specially for it.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

not just hmmm, other people as well, of course!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be sure to get my hair done specially for the 20th!

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

are you coming Lauren!? :)

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren, you should totally come in a rugby shirt and go 'yah yah'.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to go to Optimo. I'd like tog go to Glasgow very much.

I have a rugby shirt but that's only because I was FORCED to play it in school.

Comp looks good.

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not into the mixed DJ set disc, but the second mix cd is pretty great.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

You could come and then go home before 12, Matthew!

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a crap haircut!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a hipster!

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahhh, edinburgh glasgow rivalry. "slum dwellers" versus "aids ridden bastards". Those were the days.

Pure >> Slam
That electro night under a curry restaurant in Paisley >>>>> anything in edinburgh in the late 90s

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, yes - plans are being made for the 20th, fingers crossed.

you should totally come in a rugby shirt and go 'yah yah'.

clearly, this is the way forward!

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And get Stacey to come with her dead fox - you'd make a terrific pair.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

we're not going anywhere without the dead fox. don't worry.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm with matt flux; the mix feels really clinical, impressive but not really as fun as the tracklisting might suggest

Nick Sylvester, Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

adam did you never go to glasgow when you lived in Scotland?

Lauren, YAY!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

this comp is great.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear on the winds Optimo may try Dublin more, someday.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 January 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Saturday April 2nd - Galway 110th Street

!!!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 27 January 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

A mass outing to Galway would be totally ace. If only I still had friends living there. Maybe I should contact friends of friends.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 January 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(however, maybe going to another country to see something you live down the road from is a bit nuts, but then... away football supporters)

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 January 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm up for it if any of you fancy a trip to Galway!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll drive.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't drive home though.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the whole thing; more, even, than "Keep it Solid Steel".

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait to pick this up, btw. 2005 is going to be as good as 2004 innit!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 27 January 2005 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never knowingly lived in scotland.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 January 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

How did that start, anyway?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

fortunately the disc compilation is seemingly devoid of crap haircuts and hipsters.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 27 January 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

A lot of my Optimo favorites are on here! "Heaven and Hell is on Earth!" it picks up a little bit after the echoey reverbey Langley Schools tune.. the feel changes and it flows a bit better

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 January 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost the second disc does seem better, but, even though they aren't the greatest mixers, they do have a hip record collection. Might have been better if Disc 1 was an unmessed-with comp, like Disc 2. Either way, I'm glad to have it, and would love to visit the club (maybe a live set next time, or have they done that?)

don, Thursday, 27 January 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally got this thanks to the info of an ILM poster on where to buy it from and can't believe the comment that they're not the greatest mixers. I think the mixing on this is absolutely mindblowing or am I missing something?

Seth Is Never Enough, Thursday, 27 January 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Even though they aren't the greatest mixers, they do have a hip record collection."

Surely a candidate for the new Optimo slogan?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"Never Knowingly Undersold"

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"We love you queers"

Alba (Alba), Friday, 28 January 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahahaha!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 28 January 2005 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i will say that the Langley School's "Good Vibrations" really slows things down to a dreadful pace at one point. other than that, it's great

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 28 January 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Langley Schools track is a kind of a set closer though - it's the last track of Wilkes's and then Twitch takes over. If you think of it as two mixes it helps.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 28 January 2005 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

That Junkyard Band song is the motherfucking bomb. Jesus.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Friday, 28 January 2005 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i never realized "good vibrations" was the wilkes/twitch switchover till just recently. (the pitchfork review tipped me off, actually.) makes much more sense now.

rm265, Friday, 28 January 2005 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that is a great lighter-than-air stepping stone.Even(especially?) on disc, the Langley kids are enclosed in their own sound quality, their own time; mainly what filters through is their utter confidence. If it's two mixes, I prefer the second (so far).

don, Friday, 28 January 2005 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The Pitchfork review manages to get the two DJs the wrong way around though.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 28 January 2005 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

That second cd is very weird. If thatkind of music got played in a club here there would be a riot.

Seth Is Never Enough, Friday, 28 January 2005 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Page down to Jan 8, 2004 entry here for evidence of the Optimo magic producing less than a riot.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 28 January 2005 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, finally picked this up and it's fantastic. there are so many good moments on here it would be hard to list. "sex dwarf", when "orange mistake" comes in, the love track at the end(!!), "gimme a kick"...etc etc woo!!

it's tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

2005!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, maybe twitch will come in here and enlighten us, but didn't it take forever for all of the licensing to happen? i think i remember reading something about it here on ilm.

i also love the hidden prince bits (esp. "gett off"). i think the second half is my favorite where it's all three tracks against each other and good and banging. (like from the cameo remix on)

it's tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
eargasm! o glasgow, how i wish i could the earth and be nearer to you!

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

fold the earth, rather. drat. whatever. this fucking thing rocks!

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i like it a lot.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Be on the look out for their new mix.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

rad!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I always forget about Vapourspace. Their/his CD got a LOT of play at WOBC in oberlin because it was like, exactly or just over 60 minutes and I"d always put it on when DJs didn't show up. Mark Gage was his name, I think?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hey dan!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Vapourspace was/is Mark Gage. Gravitational Arch of 10 had a humungously wonderful buildup intro.

moley, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

that and Legions of Green Men were the two +8 related releases that really intrigued me, as an ex-pink floyd and college rock fan getting deeper into techno.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

koenig cylinders! that's going to make at least one ilm regular very, very happy.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 28 April 2005 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

That Vapourspace CD is irritating as hell, because even though it has separate tracks (though mixed together), they aren't separated on the CD, so if you wan to hear for example track 5, you have to fast forward to it, and CD the doesn't even list track times. I guess they wanted to make a statement, like, "this CD should be listened as whole", but fuck that shit. It's dance music.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 28 April 2005 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Anybody have the tracklistings to the various mixes posted on the Optimo site?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 28 April 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
There's a part three coming!

Exclusive pre-release at colette and on the e:shop from May 22th : Kill the Dj introducing The dysfunctional family : a mixed-up compilation by Chloé & Ivan Smagghe "No style is style. No gender is gender. We are all dysfunctional". Far from your usual dj mix album, Dysfunctional Family mix styles and dig with passion sometimes club, rock, even folk, electronica, and club and rock again... "No style is style. No gender is gender. We are all dysfunctional".

Nice. More Smagghe is always good, and I loved Chloe's mix cd.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

awesome! i hate gender!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Indeed! I aspire to one day have an equally nonsensical manifesto.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

you lot are pretty cool.
no really. kill the dj is french. not from glasgow. worse. worse haircuts. sharper knives. but skag not as good. cd is a bit weird. as those fancy people from Colette say.
best answer to why gender sucks gets a pre-release cd. i am not joking. some may know i never do.

love; ivan.

ivan smagghe, Wednesday, 10 May 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

i think that post is gonna cause some people to C on M.

jäxøñ (jaxon), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 23:54 (twenty years ago)

I think so.

But isn't C-ing on M what the internet is all about?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 23:57 (twenty years ago)

you know why gender sucks. cos im blind- and i couldnt tell you left right or centre.

dave taylor, Wednesday, 24 May 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

that is to say colour blind. if you've ever been out in shoreditch- you'll know why that matters.

dave taylor, Wednesday, 24 May 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)
