Kelly Rowland - "Can't Nobody"

AKA "That other single Kelly had that cracked the top 40"

The key ingredients to this song's success:

1. That wonderfully icy reverb on the cymbal in the beat.
2. The chorus, especially when Kelly starts harmonizing with herself.
3. The incremental swelling of the song, which starts out very sparse and adds in synth lines and vocal overdubs as it goes along until it turns into a gloriously rapturous beast.

I wish this had caught on as it's better than both "Stole" and "Dilemma".

"Can't Nobody" is a flagrant double-negative.

I think those two posts together sorta define a mini-universe.

(Now that said, I've not heard this song and Dan's description very much makes me want to.)

her album wasn't all that bad.

Dan OTM. I like this better than almost every Beyonce solo single.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 27 January 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

also I totally know what you mean re: 3. those new Rich Harrison songs (the J.Lo and the Amerie) seem to do the same kinda thing: start off very skeletal, but by the last chorus some warm synths have cropped up to highlight the melody.

Is her album more or less ballad-laden than Miss Beyonce's?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I cant remember how many ballads Kelly had on her album; it might be physically impossible to match the number Beyonce had without being Celine Dion.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Amen to that.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I was about to say, this is to be thankful for.

two weeks pass...

She makes a pretty good house diva imo.

Yeah agreed.

Guetta is producing the majority of her new album, which will be entirely house/dance-pop... should be good.

lolled so hard at her splitting up that girl group on x factor cos only one of them was in the limelight and the rest were making up the numbers

that is my very favourite harrison trademark move; it was even worth sticking around with some of the wacker richgirl cuts to hear it happen like clockwork.

on j-hud's 'no one gonna love you' as well where he has this tiny bit of thundering cello or whatever briefly turn up round the 3 minute mark.
