Search: The Dickies - Paranoid

I just got a sab trib from temp res today, and i have nothing but good things to say about that label lately, but i realize now that wacky covers only really burn me up when the band in question is one near and dear to me. but not always. hey, i liked NWA as much as the next playa, and i had no problem with that nina gordon cover. anyway, the matmos cover of f/x is a waste of time. i'd much rather hear momus or matos cover it. four tet's iron man cover just bugs me. the anomoanon's planet caravan ain't bad. racebannon's cover of sabbath bloody sabbath is great! all spazzcored out like a wormy apple and it gets nice and noizy at the end. so, anyway, you know what to do.

The Dickies - Paranoid

A fine fine version. So used am I to the Dickies' take that whenever Ozzy *doesn't* conclude the original studio version with the one line that I'm always kinda surprised.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard Primal Scream's cover of "War Pigs" but I admit I'm curious.

1000 Homo DJ's cover of "Supernaut" R0XX0R

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

1000 Homo Dj's seconded.

"War Pigs" by Faith No More is boringly faithful, as was "Planet Caravan" by Pantera.

"Sweat Loaf" by the Butthole Surfers is probably the most original one I can think of.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

that Butties song is fantastic, I dunno if it qualifies as a strict "cover" tho (more of a "ripoff")

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't this like the fourth or fifth Sabbath tribute record?

Dude, guys, that 1000 Homo DJ's thing SUXX0Rs tremendously. What the fuck is that drillrod doing shouting "supernaut!" all the time? In that stupid-ass 'scary' 80s industrial voice. Just awful.

I heard a smooth jazz version of "Planet Caravan" the other day that was great though!

Dude, the original is practically smooth jazz.

that Butties song is fantastic

People call them "the Butties"?? Like "The Roses" or something....that's awesome!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked that Sabbatum record a lot, various sabbath tunes done in an early music style, w/the titles & lyrics translated into latin. IUt's a novelty record, but it's fucking good. FNM's "war pigs" was a larf when they played it live. prml scrm covering "war pigs" is about the worst idea for a cover version that I can possibly imagine.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

prml scrm covering "war pigs" is about the worst idea for a cover version that I can possibly imagine.

I don't mind their cover of "Motorhead", though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, also on this album i got is a version of changes by someone named the curtis harvey trio that is bluegrassy. it's not a bad idea actually. and i have weird feelings about that song to begin with (when i was a tot it used to scare me more than the scary sab songs. it just seemed wrong to me in some way. actually, i think it just seemed wrong/creepy to me in the way that a lot of am/fm radio ballads of the 70's did.), so, someone fucking with it doesn't bother me as much.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

the scary thing about "Changes" to me was always the Mellotron. and, I guess you'd have to say, how despondent Ozzy sounds. Even when they tried to be pretty they were scary. I mean, it's like, "Laguna Sunrise", there is something kinda creepy about that, it's no "White Summer" or "3/5 Mile in 10 Seconds"

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

you think White Summer is "scary"?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I'm saying exactly the opposite: that when Iommi did his acoustic number, it was.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the scary thing about "Changes" to me was always the Mellotron

OTM. The mellotron just has a certain spooky feel to it. It just reminds me of all those surreal early 70's films like "Don't Look Now" and "The Wicker Man" etc. Not sure why, but it does.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you could get away w/playing "motorhead" w/o being able to sing, I suppose, it's not big on "melody", is it? (/gier) Though, I thought prml scrm's version was pretty limp. To do "War Pigs", you really need to be able to sing, as in, actually hit the notes pretty closlely. Just imagine bby glssp attempting the "generals gathered in their masses" bit!!

+ yeah, Sabbath's acoustic bits could be quite sinister.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

so no one's actually heard the prml scrm cover?

One can only hope it beats their "96 Tears" cover...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 28 January 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweat Loaf indeed rulz.

I actually heard the FNM War Pigs version before Sabbath's, and I liked how Jim Martin's guitar was more distorted/heavy than Iommi's at first. But then i grew to love the groove in the original.

PiersT, Friday, 28 January 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Primal Scream cover doesn't exist, it's just what they called "Swastika Eyes" when they released it in Germany, I'm pretty sure.

haitchâ„¢ (haitch), Friday, 28 January 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanted to make a record of Calypso covers of Black Sabbath songs and call it "Black Sabbatical," but somebody called Beyond Salem already recorded an album with that name. That and the fact that I have no ability or means to make a calypso record are the only things that stopped me.

1000 Homo DJ's is awesome, which surprised me, because Supernaut is my favorite Black Sabbath song, and I was averse to hearing any covers.

I remember being really enamored with Soundgarden's cover of "Into The Void" when I was in high school (I think it came on a disc accompanying the first pressing of badmotorfinger), but who knows if it's really any good.

Alice Donut used to do "War Pigs" as an instrumental, with the trombone handling the vocal lines. That was sort of cool, but I don't know if they ever recorded it.

in that case somebody should nominate "call me" by blondie

People call them "the Butties"?? Like "The Roses" or something....that's awesome!

Who calls them "the Butties?" I have been a fan for well over a decade and this is the first time I've heard that term. "The Butts," sure, but "the Butties?" What the hell is that?

Never heard them called "the Butties" either. More often than not they were either "the Buttholes" or "the `Surfers".

Are you suggesting, Chuck, that "Call Me" is a ripoff of "Sweet Leaf"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 28 January 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Children of the Grave" actually.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 28 January 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

well, not the same notes, but the progression is very similar!

(Similarly, Quincy Jones/Michael Jackson nicked the bass line from Rick James's "Give It To Me Baby" for the song "Thriller".. not the notes, but the progression and rhythm.)

donut christ (donut), Friday, 28 January 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Children of the Grave" actually.

Yup. Mentioned this in Stairway to Hell and I haven't been able to hear the songs the same way since! Giorgio Moroder, METALHEAD.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Primal Scream never covered War Pigs. That was just the alternate name for Swastika Eyes.Their version of Motorhead is deadly though.

Black Arkestra (Black Arkestra), Friday, 28 January 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always had a real soft spot for Metallica's Sabbra Cadabra/ National Acrobat medley. One of the best examples of James Hetfield's 'pirate vocals' period (best exemplified by the oft unjustly vilified Whiskey in the Jar cover).

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 28 January 2005 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotta agree that 1000 Homo DJs' "Supernaut" is at the top of the heap.

Cannibal Corpse's "Zero the Hero" is good, in a goofy kind of way.

Pantera's "Planet Caravan", too.

a. begrand (a begrand), Friday, 28 January 2005 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Faith No More's "War Pigs" is definitely one of the most dull.

Oh, and the version of the same song by the Flaming Lips and Chan Marshall on Austin City Limits was horrific.

a. begrand (a begrand), Friday, 28 January 2005 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Destroy "War Pigs" by the Desden Dolls. Destroy the Dresden Dolls generally.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 28 January 2005 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I think somebody should mention the song "Acting Like Black Sabbath" by The Dayglo Abortions. It might as well be me, as I'm drunk on jagermeister. It's a hilarious tribute to Sabbath by a Canadian hardcore band . . . . pretty ace.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 28 January 2005 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ultraviolence - 'Paranoid'. Best thing they ever did by a mile

Search: the Cardigans, "Iron Man"

Yes. You wouldn't think it would work, but it does. They also did a rather unremarkable a capella version of "Mr. Crowley" as a b-side, but I realize that's just Ozzy rather than Sabbath. I don't think I ever got to hear their version of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath".

The mellotron just has a certain spooky feel to it. It just reminds me of all those surreal early 70's films like "Don't Look Now" and "The Wicker Man" etc. Not sure why, but it does.

Understandable, and I'm quite chuffed to know someone here knows these films. I may not watch T.V. but when I get down to renting videos, that's exactly the kind of stuff I like to watch.

Yup. Mentioned this in Stairway to Hell and I haven't been able to hear the songs the same way since! Giorgio Moroder, METALHEAD. <

And I just noticed the other day (while watching my Freaks and Geeks DVD box) that "Whipping Post" sounds oddly similar to "Call Me" and "Children of the Grave", too. But I still think Sabbath might have ripped it off of Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of Creation" first.

chuck, Friday, 28 January 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually like a lot of the versions on that first Nativity in Black album. Sepultura's version of Symptom of the Universe is faithful but awesome, especially the drum part.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that they top the originals, of course, but the live Black Sabbath covers performed by Ozzy on Speak Of The Devil were better than the "actual" Sabbath versions of the same songs on the simultaneously-released Live Evil. ("Actual" in quotes because, to me, it just wasn't Sabbath without Ozzy, altho some of the Dio-sung stuff was OK. Some of the Ian Gillan stuff, too.)
