1. You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette
Angry young women, unite! If you're a girl and you couldn't think of one guy in your life that this song reminded you of, you're very lucky and need to be smacked.

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 28 January 2005 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't keep living this way by rootjoose
The most criminally overlooked band ever. THe fact that no-one will have heard of this song is proof to that.

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 28 January 2005 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

please kill me

Stevem On X (blueski), Friday, 28 January 2005 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

5. There She Goes by the laa's
The fact that it was used in So I married an Axe Murderer, just shows how fantastic it is

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 28 January 2005 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

1. The Promise of a New Day by Paula Abdul
I think this is my absolute favorite song of the decade. I never get tired of it! It is so beautiful, uplifting, positive, and gives you a wonderful feel-good sensation. Sort of "Chicken Soup for the Soul" set to music!! I love it! Paula Abdul was the early 90s disco queen!

amanda lear (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 January 2005 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

traingurl, Friday, 28 January 2005 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't 'There She Goes' come out in '89?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 28 January 2005 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going to stop posting from this because there are too many, but before I do:

There's nothing sexier than a guy with a paper thin moustache.

This makes me roffle far more than it should.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 28 January 2005 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

There's nothing sexier than a guy with a paper for a moustache.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 28 January 2005 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't 'There She Goes' come out in '89?

'88 I think. But to be fair, it wasn't a hit until 1990.

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 28 January 2005 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I haven't thought about "Promise of a New Day" for years. That is a good song!

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 28 January 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Silverchair vs. RHCP defined the 90's apparently.

this song really proves itself as the very first beginning of daniel johns musical diary and with its orchestral sounds and personal elements added in this really proves no 1
9. Californication by Red hot chili peppers
this song is from the album sucess californication, with its thought outlyrics this for sure is the number 1
8. Otherside by Red hot chili peppers
once again this song has really out done itself staying at the top of the charts
7. Scar Tissue by Red hot chili peppers
with its weird, sickning but brilliantly done video this song really takes the meaning of talent

one of the first big hit single for the chili peppers

Once again this song defines the true meaning of talent
4. Tomorrow by Silverchair
The song that made Silverchair famous this song really defined the meaning of grunge at such a young age
3. Miss you love by Silverchair
A song of anti-love, this song really gets to grips with life and its meaning
2. Ana's song by Silverchair
this rock ballad is one of the first account of Daniel Johns musical diary encounter
1. Anthem for the year 2000 by Silverchair
Silverchair defines the meaning of this hardcore rock song that gonna go way past the year 2000!

Gregory T (tubesocks), Friday, 28 January 2005 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

10. In the Meantime by Spacehog
WHo's Spacehog? If you don't know screw off, Pop fag.

Classic DMB
4. Bulls on Parade by Rage against the machine
SO much power and emotion rage is a band that will be remembered
3. Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton
Not a big fan of "ballads;" but when one of the pioneers of hard rock and a legend shows soft side I can't help but love it
2. Paranoid Android by Radiohead
the ONLY epic song to come out of the nineties to follow the epics of the 70's; it takes you on a roller coaster of emotion
1. Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
not even my favorite nirvana song but an easy choice

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 28 January 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Miles Finch, Friday, 28 January 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

2. Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden
I know, I know ... another Seattle band. It's MY list, alright ??? This is a very moody ,dark song. It reflects the tone of the grunge sound.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 28 January 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

5. No Son Of Mine by Genesis
Phil Collins' ballad on a broken home and an abusive father is a beautifully woven mixture of an uncharacteristically alternative guitar riff and his classic drum expertise. Collins is another underrated influence. He invented the sound that we today call a sellout. He's also one of the few perfectionist musicians left: A guy who can play and sing and write just about anything.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 28 January 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

8. Black Or White by Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson delivered the goods on this 1991 single with a guest appereance by Slash (Guns N' Roses). Of course, there was the video too with the morphing, Macually Culkin lip syncing, and his destructive escapade at the end.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 28 January 2005 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

3. All Over You by Live
Beautiful song that represents, in my opinion, the dying of the Piscean Age. Water being beaten down and abused. A lot of metaphorical reference in a few repeated lyrics.

10. All For Love by Bryan Adams, Sting and Rod Stewart
This went head to head with Everything I Do (also by Adams),but when you put three excellent singers together you end up with an even greater song

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 28 January 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

He invented the sound that we today call a sellout.

I love this idea of making 'sellout' a genre invented by Phil Collins.

So what kind of music do you like?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 28 January 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Friday, 28 January 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on, where's the obligatory sourpuss that always shows up on these threads and chastises everyone for presumably making fun of others' musical tastes/knowledge/reviews?

XPOST NEVERMIND

sleep (sleep), Friday, 28 January 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 28 January 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The sad thing is that I actually do feel that way most of the time, Haibun. (By "sad" I mean "mean-spirited and evil", I think. But come on, the "Alanis is my role model" line is pretty hysterical.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 January 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

3. 9. Creep by Radiohead
The second sexiest song ever written.
Fails to say what the sexiest is. too drunk to fuck?

I think this is quoting something Thom Yorke said at a concert .. They covered "Nobody Does It Better" after he said "this is the sexiest song that was ever written," and after that he says "this is the second sexiest song that was ever written" and they went into "Creep."

3. 9. Creep by Radiohead
The second sexiest song ever written.
Fails to say what the sexiest is. too drunk to fuck?

I think this is quoting something Thom Yorke said at a concert .. They covered "Nobody Does It Better" after he said "this is the sexiest song that was ever written," and after that he says "this is the second sexiest song that was ever written" and they went into "Creep."

oh well. Serves me right for ignoring radiohead.

1. Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana
the ultimate grunge song. Reminds me of slam-dancing at Club Med in Martinique

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Saturday, 29 January 2005 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, my "Top Ten List of the 90s" would consist of about 35 songs, but since they only allowed me ten, I just put my top ten up there. : )

This made me smile out loud.

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 29 January 2005 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Check out this list from the '70s page:

By: Judy
10. On The Radio by Donna Summer
Great song from The Queen of Disco.
9. It's Going To Take Some Time by the Carpenters
My all time fav I think from the Carpenters.
8. Tryin To Get The Feeling by Barry Manilow

7. Beautiful Music by Barry Manilow

6. It's A Miracle by Barry Manilow

5. Bandstand Boogie by Barry Manilow

4. New York City Rhythm by Barry Manilow

3. Copacabana by Barry Manilow

2. This One's For You by Barry Manilow

1. Could It Be Magic by Barry Manilow
My all time favorite song actually I think my all time fav from Barry Manilow.

The 1970s has alot of psychedelic music and I could go on and on but I will stop here.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Saturday, 29 January 2005 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

This guy is a fucking genius. The bits about Weezer,Nirvana & Clapton are superb.

10. Lightning Crashes by Live
I like this song, and I'm tried. But you know it's awsome
9. Tonight tonight by Smashing Pumpkins
This song really showed the world how smart the Pumpkins were.
8. Nautical Disaster by The Tragically Hip
A song about the worst disaster in Canadian naval history. It is because of those kinds of topics that Americans will never be able to listen to the Hip. But that's what makes them so great. The won't give in just to make cash. Damn right. This song is straight up rock and roll. Drums, guitar, bass. Boo-ya.
7. Buddy Holly by Weezer
Great song. Good band to bust out onto the scene. A little post punk for ya. It's damn wicked. Especially since it makes fun of white guy ebonics before making fun of white guy ebonics was cool.
6. Lithium by Nirvana
Really, this is the best song on that CD, and you know it. Smells like teen Spirit might have been the it-song of the 90's, but this song shows you what Nirvana are totally made of. Loud soft loud soft. It's the formula that made them famous and it works really well here. Especially with the Lyrics.
5. Don't Speak by No Doubt
A great song about breaking up, a good old fashion rock and roll topic. Also, it features a female vocalist, which is rare in such a stand out rock song like this.
4. November Rain by Guns And Roses
This is pretty obvious. It's a great long epic song. No one does these anymore, really, especially since this song. This song is probably the Stairway to Heaven of the 1990's.
3. Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton
I'm talking about the MTV unplugged version. I might wager that this song is the best tribute to anyone ever. The live version could bring you to tears. It's unfortunate that this song had to come from such an unfortunate situation. Still, this is the ultimate gift a father could give to a fallen son.
2. Jeremy by Pearl Jam
This is probably the best song of the grunge era. It has a good social message and the music is fantastic. It showcases Eddie Vedder's unique style better than any other Pearl Jam song.
1. Everlong by Foo Fighters
There is something about this song. It all comes together. The Lyrics are open for interpretation, the New wave drum beat is very retro and works well, the song is creepy and beautiful all at the same time. This is probably the song that Foo Fighters should be remembered for, and I think that it does them justice.

I only included rock in here because if you were able to make a stand out rock song in the 1990s, then it probably was one of the best songs of the 90's

Black Arkestra (Black Arkestra), Saturday, 29 January 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Americans don't like Canadian naval disasters. Or songs about Canadian naval disasters, I'm not sure which.
