this song is a free download on iTunes, and listening to it is killing me. why does the old Bright Eyes, the one that i really liked, have to go away to become this protesting bring back everything that sucked about the sixties mess?

JD from CDepot, Friday, 28 January 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Dare I ask for the lyrics?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

We should make up our own right now. That would be better.

bprofane (AaronHz), Friday, 28 January 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything that you hate about the 60s is awesome.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 28 January 2005 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're anxious for to shine
in the high aesthetic line
as a man of culture rare, You must get up all the germs
of the transcendental terms
and plant them ev'rywhere.
You must lie upon the daisies
and discourse in novel phrases
of your complicated state of mind,
The meaning doesn't matter
if it's only idle chatter
of a transcendental kind.

And ev'ry one will say,
As you walk your mystic way,
"If this young man expresses himself
in terms too deep for me,
Why, what a very singularly deep young man
this deep young man must be!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello?
is it me you're looking for
What
do you mean you're donald rumsfeld?
Is it true
are you God?

Hello?
Am i a bad man Don
What
Do you mean this isn't Don?
Is it true
this isn't Don?

Goodbye
to drugs and terror
What
do you mean 'what about Ben Kweller'?
Is it true
Is he evil?

Farewell
God
Thanks for the hot Bod.
The hot bod.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 28 January 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Are those the lyrics?

My friend made me listen to the country Bright Eyes record yesterday and it sounded like he superimposed himself over Gilded Palace of Sin. That would be a good thing if I liked his vocals, but I don't, so.

BRIGHT EYES LYRICS

"When The President Talks To God"

when the president talks to god
are the conversations brief or long?
does he ask to rape our womens' rights
or to send poor farm kids off to die?
will the president reccomend an oil hike
when the president talks to god?

when the president talks to god
are the words he chooses hard or soft?
does he resolute all down the line?
is every issue black or white?
does what god say ever change his mind
when the president talks to god?

when the president talks to god
does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
agree which convicts should be killed?
where the prison's built and filled?
which voter fraud must be concealed
when the president talks to god?

when the president talks to god
I wonder which one plays the better cop
we should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke
no, they're lazy, George, I say we don't
just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke
that's what god reccomends

when the president talks to god
do they drink beer and go play golf
when they pick which country should we invade
and which heathen souls still can be saved?
yeah I guess god just calls a spade a spade
when the president talks to god

when the president talks to god
does he ever think that maybe he's not?
that that voice is just inside his head
when he kneels down in the presidential bed
does he ever smell his own bullshit
when the president talks to god?

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Friday, 28 January 2005 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, thats "near" beer in the song.

danh (danh), Friday, 28 January 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

there is so much wrong with that.

kneels down IN the bed.

INSIDE the bed.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Friday, 28 January 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If he was going to do kneeling beside the bed he obviously should've made some joke about getting a BJ from God. Duh!!

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 28 January 2005 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey man, I'm just quoting what he sings. I'm not trying to stick up for the guy.

one sez heathen and one sez muslim..does it get switched around when sung live in heavily arabic cities?

This thread is so ripe for a game of "guess the real Bright Eyes lyrics".

cdwill, Friday, 28 January 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

For a second, I really thought those Gil & Sullivan lyrics were the real ones. I was a bit surprised at how his vocabulary had improved so much.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

those lyrics are fine. frankly I'm glad some artists aren't afraid to do political songs now while the US goes to hell.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Good intentions and good art don't necessarily jibe. This song I haven't heard but I can imagine what it does sound like and it's not a pretty picture. Still, if someone wants to share an mp3...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

those lyrics are fine. frankly I'm glad some artists aren't afraid to do political songs now while the US goes to hell.

-- kyle (akmonda...), January 28th, 2005.

Not afraid? That's so unnecessarily congratulatory. Making a song like this is easy, and there's an instant base of people who will automatically like it. What disappoints me is that no one has been able to write a song about Bush that isn't painfully obvious and simplistic.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

When a bright young singer's a hype,
Does it mean he must suck the pipe
Of his own exhaust?
Or perhaps he's just lost,
though the heart of this headcase
is in a comfortably correct place?

When a narcissist gets political --
Offers something more than treacle --
*Must* he sound like a fool?
Speak in headlines like a tool?
While raging 'bout Bush's misrule?
(Which I admit is quite cruel.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike, I adore you for that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I know there's plenty on this board who can do better.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I admit if you had added a LYSOL DOUCHE at the end it would have been poet laureate time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Making a song like this is easy, and there's an instant base of people who will automatically like it

Kinda like ripping on Bright Eyes on ILM, no?

bnw (bnw), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody said it wasn't easy.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, bright eyes is brave
or so it would seem to us
runover by bus

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

A single tear falls down my cheek
That evil Bush preys on the weak
I am hot yet I am geek
Oh emo girl, it is you I must freak

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

no i don't want no bush
a bush is a guy who can't get no love from me
hanging out the oval office side
trying to rhetoric me.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 28 January 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"those lyrics are fine. frankly I'm glad some artists aren't afraid to do political songs now while the US goes to hell."

detachment, disinteredness, indifference--aesthetic theory has so often presented these as the only way to recognize the work of art for what it is, autonomous, selbstandig, that one ends up forgetting that they really mean disinvestments, detachment, indifference, in other words, the refusl to invest oneself and take things seriously. the flaunting of "musical culture" is not a cultural display like others: as regards its social definition, "musical culture" is something other than a quantity of knowledge and experiences combined with the capacity to talk about them. music is the most "spiritual" of the arts of the spirit and a love of music is a guarantee of "spirituality."

When a singer releases two CDs,
He seems as clever as Rick Dees,
Artful as a Nike Swoosh,
Pleasant like a Lysol Douche,
As wise as Lyndon LaRouche...
yet not as wise as La Bouche.

She came from Baghdad she had a thirst for water
she studied nothing at Saint Martins College
that's where I caught her eye
She told me that her dad was wanted
I said "In that case I'll have a rum and coca-cola, she said "No"
and in 30 seconds time she said "I want to live like Iraqi people,
I want to do whatever Iraqi people do,
I want to sleep with Iraqi people,
I want to sleep with Iraqi people like you".
Well what else could I do,
I said "I’ll see what I can do."

I took her to a bombed out building,
I don’t know why but I had to start it somewhere,
so it started there.
I said 'Pretend you’ve got some money’,
but she just laughed and said "Oh you’re so funny",
I said "Yeah. Well I can’t see anyone else smiling in here."
Are you sure you want to live like Iraqi people,
you want to see whatever Iraqi people see,
you want to sleep with Iraqi people,
you want to sleep with Iraqi people like me.
But she didn’t understand, she just smiled and held my hand.

Rent a flat above a mosque, cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some flags and play some pool,
pretend you never went to school.
But still you’ll never get it right
‘cos when you’re laid in bed at night
watching bombs hit the walls,
if he called his dad he could stop it all.
You’ll never live like Iraqi people,
you’ll never do whatever Iraqi people do,
you’ll never fail like Iraqi people,
you’ll never watch your life slide out of view,
and dance and not drink or screw,
because there’s nothing else to do.

Sing along with the Iraqi people, sing along and it might just get you through.
Laugh along with the Iraqi people,
laugh along even though they’re laughing at you and the stupid things that you do, because you think that poor is cool.
Like a dog lying in a corner they will bite you and never warn you. Look out they’ll tear your insides out.
'Cos everybody hates a terrorist,
especially one who thinks it’s all such a laugh and the smoke stains and blood will come out in the bath.
You will never understand how it feels to live your life with no meaning or control and with nowhere left to go.
You are amazed that they exist and they burn so bright whilst you can only wonder why.
Rent a flat above a mosque, cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some flags and play some pool,
pretend you never went to school.
Still you’ll never get it right
‘cos when you’re laid in bed at night
watching bombs hit the wall,
if he called his dad he could stop it all.
You’ll never live like Iraqi people,
you’ll never do what Iraqi people do,
you’ll never fail like Iraqi people,
you’ll never watch your life slide out of view,
and dance and not drink or screw because there’s nothing else to do. I want to live with Iraqi people like you, etc.

George W. Bush is not only a better person, but a better singer and probably a better lyricist than Conor Oberst.

like i said earlier, i really do like the older bright eyes stuff, like fevers and mirrors and the Every Day ep, i dunno, maybe i was/am depressed and i really truly identified with it. i always saw the critique of bright eyes as totally valid: the music was juvenille, the voice was sore, etc. but i didnt care, because I understood, it. or so i thought.

but now, i see all of this "political" stuff, and it makes me feel like ive been had. yes, it is a good thing to protest, to not be completely complacent in your government, and yes, i guess he is braver than most artists. but that said, i cant help but feel like its all a repeat, that none of these ideas are new or even his, and therefore could never be mine or any other fans.

i just can't shake the feeling that the minute an artist starts singing about politics in a manner such as this, perhaps they truly have nothing left to say.

this song has nothing on the abomination that was Eddie Vedder on Jonsey's Jukebox on Indie 103 last Friday. He played this 10 minute protest acoustic jam about Cheney, Rhenquist, etc. It was fucking awful. Then he started talking about 'my friend Vincent' and his proclivities and I wanted to drive my car off of a cliff.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Friday, 28 January 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Then he started talking about 'my friend Vincent' and his proclivities

So what were they? Horses, sheep...?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon guys, don't you see this song means it's just a matter of time before the Conor Oberst/Joan Osborne duet!!

VG's fascist proclivities

Vincent Van Gogh's fascist proclivities. "The sunflower is of PURE ARYAN BACKGROUND!"

like when Dylan went electric and the folk hordes cried, erstwhile indie heartthrob Conor Oberst plugs in to the masses, his detractors eating his dust

It's probably just coincidence, but I've warmed to this song just very slightly since I first heard it. I have no idea why.
