So the Silver Jews are recording a new album

This is just gathered from P-fork, and seems to be completely rumor, but I'm rabid and need to discuss it nonetheless.

Frankly I was disapointed he was back with Malkmus and the old crew. I loved the new direction he was taking with Nashville session musicians, and was hoping he'd continue in that hi-fi direction. Malkmus never did him any favors on previous records, and the actualy music sounded like half assed Pavement (which is still fucking good, and I loved).

The inclusion of Will Oldham sounds DIRE. I don't understand his appeal at all. His lyric are boring, and his voice is terribly annoying -- and I'm fucking liberal when it comes to voices (I like Berman's for chrissakes). Although people see the association of Oldham and Berman as obvious (they're both alt country sad guys!), they seem polar opposites to me.

The news that this may be the last SJ recording is a stake in the chest. It god damn better not be.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not rumor, check the most recent Drag City news update.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I like Oldham, but I don't really want to hear him on a 'Jews record.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I assume Berman's lyrics will continue to be the centerpiece, though, which was always 60 or 70% of why I listened, and why I can tolerate even the albums I don't like as much.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

This is terriffic news!!

Whatwhat!!, Friday, 28 January 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This would not be the first collab b/w Oldham and Berman. When I lived in VA 9 yrs ago Berman, a local resident, was apparently writing with Oldham for a "Silver Palace" thing that never came to fruition.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Friday, 28 January 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a live bootleg circulating of Berman (a rare live appearance) and Oldham playing together - it's great - they tell horrible off color jokes and generally get talked over a lot, but it just sounds like tons of fun.

Any new Jews is good news, by God! You ungrateful fux

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 28 January 2005 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

wow i totally posted this on the pavement list after someone else did, and was flamed! god, i hate corny indie fux0rs.

Zach Vowell reports:
So we know that a mere reissue of Pavement's Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain isn't enough to fill the gigantic slacker hole that the band's demise left in your life. However, there is one bright spot-- the Silver Jews are still recording (or is it recording again?), long after their Matador counterpart's demise. And though the process is way too embryonic to start talking about tracklists and release dates, much less album titles, the basic (and pretty fucking exciting) facts are confirmed by Drag City: Stephen Malkmus, Steve West, and Bob Nastanovich are on board to help David Berman with his latest masterpiece. This piece of news substantiates what rampant rumors have speculated ever since Malkmus posted the following on his website: "Nashville is unseasonably warm-- there are termites in my computer that adds things to the dialog". Not that he's not usually cryptic as hell anyway. American Water fans everywhere were baffled by everything after "Nashville", but that city, that city conjured up such sweet possibilities. Consider the possible the actual.

The curate's egg that is the indie rumor mill also named Will Oldham as a participant, but, according to Drag City, that mysterious "Prince" cannot be nailed down as a collaborator (though we agree with the mill that he would fit in perfectly). But don't fret-- Mike Fellows, another American Water vet, has been involved, as well as Cassie Berman. The provocative list continues with ex-Jesus Lizard axe handler Duane Denison, Nashville mainstay Bobby Bare, Jr., Bare's (and Olham's, Lambchop's, and Calexico's, for that matter) collaborator Tony Crow, Chicago vocalist/scenester AZITA, and drummer/vocalist Brian Kotzur. Note also that the rumors intimated this could be the Jews' last album; with an all-star cast like this, it could be the final hurrah.

Thank you!

Is this the Sarah Lawrence he is talking about? I need to find a way to get down there. Bronxville? Does that mean The Bronx? I havent ventured much outside of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It's outside of the city. Bronxville is either near or part of Yonkers, I think. you can take MetroNorth there nice and quick.

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

By Train

During the week, Metro-North Railroad, Harlem Line commuter trains run every half-hour between 6:00 a.m. and

11:30 p.m. weekdays and hourly on weekends. Take the train from Grand Central Terminal to the Bronxville Station. Purchase your round-trip tickets at the station to avoid an extra charge. Please call Metro-North at 1.800.METROGO (1.800.638.7646), visit the Metro-North site or inquire at the information booth in Grand Central Terminal for exact schedule and fare information. Taxi service is available at the Bronxville Station for the short ride to the College (Ask for the Westlands Building for the Admission Office).

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a song on it called "punks of the beerlight."
that kinda worries.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

err, "in" which is just as bad.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda like that title but not as much as "how can i love you (if you won't lie down?)"

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"k-hole" is a good one.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Magic City = Jesus. Tis a simple equation.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hm

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard one of the new songs today on WPRB. Pretty great. There was a line in it I really liked, but can't quite remember right about how I love you because "you make my lies come true."

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus says, go to the Bronx every once in a while, it's good for you. Go to NYC's real little italy on Arthur Ave or get one of those roast pork sandwiches with the crunchy skin from a latin sandwich shop.

That "lies come true" song is four years old, Hurting. It's still a great song.

That's "room games and diamond rain" off bright flight.

This is it, right?:
Hey, American friend — wanna buy a really rare record? If you’re near a fine Drag City direct retailer, you’ll have a chance to buy one on October 18th. See, that’s the day Drag City’s little sister label Sea Note issues a mystery single so strange and mysterious…let's see, so strange and mysterious, we can’t tell you a single thing about this single! Well, perhaps just one little note — this record is related to our big October 18th release and a rumor that’s spread for some years over a collaboration with this band and another band on Drag City. That’s all we’re telling you — put together the pieces and five dollar bills and be the first in line — and you too might have this rarest of items!

*"it" being the rumored Oldham/Berman thing...

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

I like "Tanglewood" pretty well. I sat down with David Berman yesterday at his Nashville home and chatted about the record and what's he's been doing--I'm writin' up a piece about "TN" for the N-ville Scene here. David seemed in good spirits, has a nice house in a great part of town, and told me some funny stories. I don't know if I quite think it's their best record so far, but I think it certainly sounds good and it rocks a bit more than some of his other stuff. The photos on the front/back cover are cool too--both Eggleston shots, front taken somewhere around Memphis and the back in Chattanooga, and for what it's worth Berman described the album as kinda "pan-Tennessee." He likes living here, more power to him...

What liquor store in Memphis is that cover from?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

I mean, what bar?
