What exactly was the beef between Crawling Chaos and Joy Division/New Order

I remember reading about a feud between Joy Division and Crawling Chaos. It's also documented that New Order, at its first gig, announced "We're the last survivors of crawling chaos." So what was up between the two camps?

Joy Division was getting fucked, with no vaseline

I think Joy Division just thought they were crap. There were also rumours to the effect that members of JD/NO were actually *in* Crawling Chaos, but I don't think any of that's ever been proven. CC are more interesting as an enigma than they are as a band, methinks.

According to the book An Ideal For Living:A History of Joy Division by Mark Johnson:

"Chaos was known to be openly rude to Ian Curtis (and everyone else) and was not one of Joy Division's favourite support groups - from a personal, if not professional, standpoint."

About a gig at the Russel Club, Manchester, April 11, 1980:

"Joy Division brought along their own support group, Minny Pops but had a rude awakening when they arrived. As a joke, Tony Wilson had phoned up the club earlier, saying that he had a third band for the bill whom Rob [Gretton] would really love, but that it had to be a surprise. Wilson was unaware of the extent of the ill-will between the bands, and considering past experiences Joy Division had with Crawling Chaos, it was a bit less than a tearful reunion. To top it off, many who attended that night thought that Crawling Chaos were terrible, and wondered why Joy Division chose them as support."

two years pass...

Check out www.crawlingchaos.co.uk for clarification of details and a full(ish) breakdown and history of the band (especially the joyce and certain pair of tights stuff). It's something that will broaden in scope as time passes that I'm putting together.

When Crawling Chaos found that Joy Division weren't going to drink their post gig pile of "Pils", we stepped in and drank the lot. This was when Curtis came up to me and said: "Well, I've tried to speak to you lot, but I just can't get on with you..." in a very gay way.. Curly Jhon gave him the ritual tirade of "Joyce! Joyce De Vision!" whence he walked off. Two weeks later he hung himself.

That showed him eh?

does this guy realize that he's making himself sound like one of the 80s biggest assholes by saying that?!?

There might be someone around here who actually saw CC live back in the day.

I thought it was more explained by the "She's lost control" chord sequence sounding a lot like... etc.

Plus, as always, one band in the shadow of a bigger band on a label, big band getting all the attention/beer, the other getting snarled up in record co politics and "let's farm the album to Les Disques du Crepescule" artiness.
