his 'opening of the mouth' (for ensemble) is one of my fave discs of composition that I've heard from the last five years or so.

anyway, he's doing this gig at the spitz on the 8th feb
(not listed on their webpage, so this may change). composition in a venue that doesn't normally host it is something I wanna see.

richard barrett was interviewed. he has a lovely radio voice, btw...really liked what he said abt xenakis methods in composing electronic music (when ans the 'does this stand the test of time?') but chuckled when he talked abt how 'mysterious' part to 'polytope...' ultimately was, even after explaining what he liked abt his methods of putting sounds together.

Anyway, as to the broadcast I still found myself wandering with 'Kontakte', the piano and perc blind me to the electronics; no sharpening. 'polytope...' has this accupuncturalist quality, it prickles the eardrum before flooding it: emotionally there's a pay-off. Barrett's work took me a while to get into. I wasn't v sure about it and it needs a few listens. wish i had taped it...

wow I thought 'polytope' was a tape-only piece. did they add extra sounds to the tape or is there a score they played from scratch?

So I'm about halfway through Joel Chadabe's book Electric Sound. I had to peek ahead a little bit to find out that there's apparently a whole series of Xenakis pieces with the title "Polytope", all of which combine tape music with other kinds of spectacle like lasers and light shows. None of the descriptions in this book suggest the inclusion of live electronic sound, but I guess it's possible.

Barrett did not mention a score as such but I think I heard subtle differences to the version I have on the edition RZ CD. Maybe they were re-mixing it live?
