Mike Wexler is a phenomenal little-known Brooklyn songwriter, and I recommend checking him out. He's on first, and doors are at 8:30 pm. I've also heard good things about The Occasion, who are headlining.

I think they may both have songs for download at www.beekiller.net

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 29 January 2005 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the Occasion. The last track on their self-released (I think) record is a live track that sounds amazing. They go completely apeshit at the end of the song: howling, crashing noise, interesting feedback.

I do have an account here, but my password is lost to me.

michelle, Saturday, 29 January 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Phil, did you go? I've seen Wexler play much better, but I thought The Occasion were phenomenal.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 30 January 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmmm....i'm not totally sold on mr. wexler. vocals seem a little affected for my tastes. occassion is a bit boring, but could grow on me. want to hear more of them.

owen reading, Sunday, 30 January 2005 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the occasion a lot. they remind of a really cool supergroup of session musicians from the 70s.

Magic City (ano ano), Sunday, 30 January 2005 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Wexler's CD is really good -- he didn't sound so hot last night, but I've seen him much better. Sometimes he plays with the singer of The Occasion on piano

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

He's also a good lyricist, and it was kind of hard to hear his words last night.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

hes playing tomorrow at east river bar, with sleepy doug and benji cossa

noizem duke (noize duke), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked The Occasion a lot, but I couldn't hear the vocals at all. Otherwise they were super tight.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

is wexler gay, hence the thread title? that might pique my interest...haha

owen reading, Monday, 31 January 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha. No, he has a girlfriend.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I got his CD at the show though. If you want a track or two, I'd be happy to send them via e-mail or AIM.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.beekiller.net/people/mike.wexler/

These two songs are quite good.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

indeed they are!

Magic City (ano ano), Monday, 31 January 2005 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

hurting, you sound about as obsessed about mike wexler as I am with grizzly bear, maybe we should start our own respective fanzines or work to turn the other on to the other. i'm not against mike wexler, i'm just not sold yet. (going to download those tracks now)

owen reading, Monday, 31 January 2005 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I should admit, my band has played shows with him, and when we play with anyone I think is really good, I tend to hype them a lot. Maybe it's some kind of vicarious thing.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

But nonetheless, I will definitely check out grizzly bear now.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i do like those tracks more. can I get the CD at other music? I'm all about supporting the local scene, seems like a good guy. I think it will grow on me for sure. curious about your thoughts on GB

owen reading, Monday, 31 January 2005 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

what was with the NYC FAG title!?!?! false advertising!!! hahaha

owen reading, Monday, 31 January 2005 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

That stands for "Fancy a Gig". But I like using it because it makes more folks read the thread.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

tis true. you got me. and as a result, i'm now giving a serious listen to mr. wexler. job well done!

owen reading, Monday, 31 January 2005 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure where his CD is available other than shows. He has no web-site right now. (The story is actually quite funny -- a Polish internet predator bought his domain name when he forgot to re-register it, and now he posts porn on it and wants a few hundred dollars for the name)

Where can I hear GB?

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

you can easily limewire some songs, or if you are feeling plush get it on itunes. that's probably the easiest way to check it.

owen reading, Monday, 31 January 2005 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ps. check out the track "shift", cool old piano sounds---so I gotta go to his show now too to get the CD? damn, tough sell, but I just may do that!

owen reading, Monday, 31 January 2005 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

His e-mail is on the case if you want to ask him where to get it: [email protected]

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 31 January 2005 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks. I think i'm gonna just take a look for it at Other Music or wait til a show.

owen reading, Monday, 31 January 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i went to school with ed from gr1zzly bear. he gay. also owen, are you from canada?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 31 January 2005 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I knew that actually phil. was an added bonus! haha. i'm not canadian believe it or not. (what made you ask?)

owen reading, Monday, 31 January 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone happen to stay at rothko until 4am? if so, there was an incredible dj downstairs who played phoenix and "boom i fucked your boyfriend" in the same set....okay, okay. that dj was me. sad i missed the early show, i was busy getting my set together. i ran into ed on friday. his current boy is pretty hot.

waxyjax (waxyjax), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

how does everyone know him and not me? hmmm.

cyberly speaking, do I seem canadian? still pondering this...

owen reading, Monday, 31 January 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i asked because just an hour earlier someone said that i would get along with this music geek friend of theirs from canada named owen, and there have been stranger coincidences happen, so i thought i would give it a shot. you dont seem especially canadian, so dont worry!

i ran into ed on friday. his current boy is pretty hot.

hotter than grandin???

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

well....he's not YOUR kind of hot--but ya know, more like modely pretty boy hot. but if i see ed making out with someone like grandin or the verizon guy i'll be sure to take him down so you can jump in on the rebound.

waxyjax (waxyjax), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Listened to some Occasion tracks on-line. Wasn't totally thrilled with them. I like the way the vocals are sort of plain-spoken and unaffected, and I think the lyrics are decent, but the melodies are sort of unmemorable. What they have is a really good, full sound, especially live.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the record leaves me a little cold. I think they will get better though, becasue live they can really be a monster.

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

that EP thing is kids stuff compared to album-in-progress. prolly out in august.

noizem duke (noize duke), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

uhh, they aren't that great. i'm more interested in those "gay" bands, even tho i'm not gay. hollah? i'm back. I still think ILM is a secret

breezy, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been listening to the Wexler album a good bit. Here's a few lyrics I really like from Meridian, Meridian:

I spent a long time in the pipeline
I did my time in school
I did the math and I made my very own
estimate with the golden rule

How to proceed with no sense of entitlement
go where the sun don't shine
there's never any shortage of people in this world
driving me out of my mind

(. . .)

Sometimes it's hard to see here by the light of day
something easy on the eyes
you think you're fooling everyone, but you are just the number one
believer of your own pack of lies

(. . .)

Goodbye to the line in the sand
that crept like a spider to bite us
Goodbye to the knife in the hand
of the sworn enemy who's inside us
Goodbye to the sound of our names
on a tongue that would try to (?) us
Goodbye to the faces we wore
to identify or to hide us

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i would maybe go except i'm probably working. still haven't seen xmas decorations, dangit.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

someone told me about a wexler show tonight. hurting. did you check out my rec. i'm growing on yours. come on, tit for a tat now.....haha

owen reading, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Stence, you're a couple of days late anyway.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

hurting, you are on a lot just like me, yet you ignore my query....hmmm. i'm gonna get his CD! i'm SOLD!

owen reading, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, wtf, I posted a response to your query!

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought I did, anyway. What I said was, I can't find it on the net so I'll keep trying slsk.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

at this point we should just IM, which is basically what we are doing. I decided I'm going to be crazy and track down the cd and buy it. even if i don't like it, at least I'm supporting someone who needs the support. if you really can't find it, I could send it to you....but alas, that seems times consuming, really nothing on soulseek or limewire, i found a few tracks on there recently.

owen reading, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

oh d'oh, well i was working that night too.
