A little help, I'm scrounging for country vinyl tonight, thinking of picking up something by these fellas.

Gear,
was this thread inspired by Don Allred's comment on another thread?

is there an AATW comment somewhere?

AATW Tracks I'd look for:

Route 66
Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens
Texas Me And You
Miles And Miles Of Texas
Bump Bounce Boogie
Jumpin' At The Woodside
I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Someday

I have only a limited knowledge of these guys, but, wow, can they play their collective ass off.

Let us know what you find.

Their best that I've heard is from the mid-to-early 70s,(the earlier the better) with the original lineup, or thereabouts. But their LIVE AT BILLY BOB'S set, from '03 (I think), got good reviews, and considering how good David Allen Coe and Gary Stewart's L@BBs turned out, might be worth checking too.

tonight I procured:

Asleep at the Wheel - Texas Gold
Faron Young - Greatest Hits
Ella Fitzgerald - Ella in Berlin
John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman
and this Django Reinhardt compilation LP from Everest

$14, all minty!

Nice haul. Ella does a great Mack The Knife. She was early 40s when she recorded it. I don't know how Love For Sale ended up on the record, but it's fine.

Nice haul indeed. TEXAS GOLD has some good guests, eh?

twenty years pass...

Twenty years since an Asleep At The Wheel post, eh?

I should go see this band when they come through my town in a few weeks. Anyone seen 'em recently? Just want to make sure Benson hasn't totally lost his voice or something.

Still sounds good here from January. I've been on a big country run on ye' olde tube. His current band is a bunch of young hotshots who can all play the strings off their instruments. Asleep at the Wheel seems to be considered one of the real deals and is pretty revered.

On a different tip, I think some of these country singers keep their voices getting older as they sing in their natural speaking voice compared to trying to push the envelope like say a heavy metal or big diva voiced singer.

i'm so old it didn't even occur to me to look up a live clip.

or maybe i'm just putting off work by posting to the wonderful I Love Music message board.
