I just got a Dead Boys live at CBGBs DVD, and it was great, but there's
a bonus clip of two songs by this band "The Steel Tips" that was amazing!
They make me think of a 70s version of Men's Recovery Project. Who the
hell were they? Did they release anything? WTF?

I think that was Joe Coleman...

... who was a great painter, performance artist, murder historian, and all-around prophet of mayhem, and also my next-door neighbor on E 13th street for a brief time in 1992.

The Joe Coleman version of Steel Tips released a 7", "96 Tears." There are some Steel Tips songs on Coleman's Infernal Machine album. Coleman left the band at some point afterward - who knows why? - but Steel Tips continued on, releasing two more 7"s ("Ireland Must Be Free" and "Jersey City/Down In Leesberg"), and a 12" EP produced in part by rock critic Billy Altman. The Coleman-less Tips were an interesting cross between biker-rock, swamp-rock and (when the girl, whose name I don't recall, sings) melodic post-punk. Worth hearing, though not worth paying huge sums of $$ for. "Lana" is a really good song.

I'm positive Steel Tips were on Uncle Floyd at least once. They used to play Central Jersey a lot. In fact, that's how I heard of them - they were interviewed on New Brunswick's WRSU, and the local newspaper did an article on them. It was years before I knew Joe Coleman was ever part of the band.
