Tell me about The Virgin Prunes

I heard "If I die I die" on a college radio show and have never heard of these guys before-- when/where are they from, etc.?

Irish band, Gavin Friday is their most well-known member. He's responsible--I think--for influencing his pal Bono's 1990s vocal stylings (the falsettos and whispered low muttering vox). If I die, I Die is their best album. Search Gavin Friday's solo records, especially Each Man Kills the Thing He Loves and Shag Tobacco. He also composed the really beautiful soundtrack to the film The Boxer along with Maurice Seezer, fellow ex-Prune (right?).

Actually, anything the VPs and GF are involved with are pretty damn good.

Wow, thank you, that is exactly the sort of information I was seeking. Interestingly enough, Bono's 1990's vocal stylings make me puke.

Colin Newman (from Wire) produced "If I Die, I Die" and it does sound a bit like Wire in places. The single "Baby Turns Blue" is excellent cross section of post-punk and '80s goth pop.

I really liked the album Friday did right before "Shag Tobacco," too.

And that too. I'm scared. Somebody hold me. (Other than the Amazon.com phone support line, please. You're free to take me off hold.)

Uh. Wrong thread.

The Edge's older brother Dik? was guitarist of Virgin Prunes

Neither Bono or Maurice Seezer were actually in the Prunes, but U2 and the VPs emerged from the same 'Lypton village' art-punk scene in Dublin and that's where their stage-names come from.

the Virgin Prunes, Gavin Friday - classic or dud

Gavin Friday did those great backing vox on The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall.

Odd. I was just listening to "Pagan Love Song" LITERALLY FIVE MINUTES AGO!.

Anyway, If I Die, I Die... is fucking brilliant.

Maurice Seezer, fellow ex-Prune (right?).

Maurice Seezer (which he pronounces like "Morriss the Cat," not Maureeeeeece, I was disappointed to learn) was not a `Prune. I think he was a pal of producer Hal Wilner intially, but could be wrong about that. In any case, no `Prune he.
