Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Monday, 31 January 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no possible way that this won't be awesome.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"...featuring Lenny Kravitz."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

>There is no possible way that this won't be awesome.

Except for the unspeakable lameness of everything the Queens have released after the first full-length.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Except for the unspeakable lameness of everything the Queens have released after the first full-length.

So very wrong.

"...featuring Lenny Kravitz."

Hmm that would be bad.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds, um, pretty much like a Queens of the Stone Age record. Which is fine. (Except he seems to sing like Neil Young more often this time. Which is also fine.)

chuck, Monday, 31 January 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

so is Nick back in the band or what? Is this basically Homme - Lanegan - Oliveri? if so, fuck it.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That "Little Sister" track did nothing for me to the two times I played it. Still mega-curious.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

so is Nick back in the band or what? Is this basically Homme - Lanegan - Oliveri? if so, fuck it.

Nick is still out as far as I know. Lanegan is still there.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

eedd, Monday, 31 January 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

anything else?

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"In My Head" is painfully ordinary.

a. begrand (a begrand), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree, the first record is still the best.

To clear things up, Nick is not in the band and Lanegan is also no longer in band. It's always been Josh's band anyhow. The crappiest QOTSA songs were always the Nick songs anyhow. No biggie. I mean, listen to a Mondo Generator record compared to a QOTSA record, they're kinda fun, but nothing memorable. I love Lanegan, but I think he's best on his own.

"In My Head" is a decent Desert Sessions track, but yeah, the QOTSA version is kinda bleh. "Little Sister" grew on me a bit, but I'm not sold. I remember hearing "No One Knows" live when they were debuting the record and it was obviously a stand out song. "Little Sister" not so much. I'm a bit nervous about the record, but we'll see.

Weenis, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like the Desert Session version of In My Head.

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

it's pleasant enough. nothing too great.

'long slow goodbye' seems to have some promise...

eedd, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the entire album does absolutely nothing for me as i expected. i enjoy a fair bit of queens but this just sounds trendy as truckers hats (especially the first single) and lacks anything stand-out.

yanomamö (lemike), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't feelin' it, either. It's totally OK. Which is odd, because I pretty much love everything QotSA has done up to this point and I have a pretty high tolerance for the Desert Sessions. Nice to see Billy Gibbons getting a paycheck, tho'.

ng, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

based on 1 listen-
it's good. not nearly as earth/ear shattering as SftD. it's like they put away the 'darkness' and turned up the 'wierdness'. that said, there's some rawk to be had here. alotta strange gtr sounds. not enough mark. vox are too high in the mix. not enough low end, either.

there's some really nice stop/start stuff toward the end. i like the fake ending stuff, too. i can't see playing it live, but we shall see...

eedd, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't feeling it the first few listens either but I am now i've heard it more. Definitely an album thats a grower. It's mellow and fairly minimal compared to what i was expecting so nothing stands out at 1st but it slowly gets its grips on you.
Some of it sounds a lot like Masters Of Reality fronted by Josh actually.

Immy, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Josh said it was a nightime record, and I think thats the best time to listen. I guess that might not be what a lot of fans want though.

Immy, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

on first run through i like this quite a bit. maybe a few more throw aways than "songs for the deaf" but at least there is no annoyingasfuck dj shit between songs on this one.

william (william), Thursday, 10 February 2005 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

so who has this on soulseek?
i've been looking for it all day

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Thursday, 10 February 2005 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yep.....

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

aero: just join the qotsa room

yanomamö (lemike), Thursday, 10 February 2005 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a qotsa room?

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ok.
so, after a week with sporadic listening (mostly in my car), i can say this'll be looked at as the weak link. it's still got it's fill of good songs, but there's a few that just say "you got it all the first time". i'll go ahead and say it's 2.5 star, where as SftD had a 4.5 in my book. there's really only 3 true stand outs= burn the witch, who's in the wolf, medication. a few 'hey, that's alright!'s'= everybody knows yr insane, skin on skin, in my head.

things that are merely ok- lil sister, long slow goodbye, i never came.

i'll buy it, i'll go see em, and by gawd, it better rawk live.

eedd, Thursday, 17 February 2005 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah rightclick->refresh room list, aero.

yanomamö (lemike), Thursday, 17 February 2005 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
I hate to ask, but would anyone yousendit this album?

alex in montreal, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the whole album as a single zip-file?

willem (willem), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If that's convenient at all, that's absolutely cool

alex in montreal, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

NME gave it 8/10
Mojo gave it 4/5
Dunno what Q gave it.
Kerrang gave it 2/5. But then again Kerrang gave the High On Fire 3/5.
Shows how much they know.
Kerrang actually complained its was too uncommercial and didnt have enough tunes.

I wanna hear this album now.

Walt, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Kerrang OTM. dull, leaden production. i don't know if that's a reaction to the comparative gloss of Songs For The Deaf but either way he took a major wrong turn.

Lee F# (fsharp), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

in my head, i never came, the blood is love and long slow goodbye are all very good. the rest is very distant.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Sez you, Yanc3! I like the album (& got to write about it for the VV)! MORE WOODBLOCK PLZ!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

congrats on getting into the voice, dave. we'll compare reviews when mine runs too.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks! I imagine you'll win on the wordcount front, but I'm gonna win on the Lindsey Buckingham namedrop front.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

OH YOU SCENESTERS. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever, SEATTLE WEEKLY / ALL MUSIC GUIDE CONTRIBUTOR! *stupid flirty beestung-lip face*

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Who likes this and can sell me on it?

For the record, I loved Songs For The Deaf and I think they are one of the best live bands I've ever seen, but I don't really listen to much of this type of music otherwise.

Are the Deftones this type of music?

Would I like System Of A Down?

xhuxk, Friday, 25 March 2005 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The pop highs aren't as high here as they were on SFTD, its nowhere as quirky (probably cuz they got a producer other than Eric Valentine of Smashmouth & Good Charlotte fame and only Homme sings lead aside from the intro) but I may actually enjoy it more as a whole than Deaf. It's mellower.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 25 March 2005 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

fifteen years pass...

underrated the hell out of this album on release, probably because it was so much more laid back and, frankly, horny than SFtD. "I never came" -> "The blood is love" possibly the best sequence on any qotsa album

stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 18:25 (five years ago)

compared to the maximalist sheen of SFtD it practically sounds like a demos album a lot of the time, but now I think this is good not bad
