He was a great drummer (haven't heard him play lately) but LB was so fucking unbelievable a producer of drums, I can understand wanting to give him all the credit.

Obviously this shows that I haven't heard much of Fleetwood Mac before Buckingham Nicks came in.

I just got this unreleased Lindsey Buckingham album, "Gift of Screws." Several of the songs wound up on Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Will," but the funny thing is, they sound almost identical to the later Mac versions. Which makes me wonder what anyone other than Lindsey does in that band.

(Thay's said mostly in hyperbolic jest: McVie and Fleetwood are one of the best rhythm sections in rock.)

I meant to mention this before, but I've seen Mick on various VH1 shows and I've always enjoyed his stately presence.

I love the way the Fleetwood/McVie rhythm section will set up a monster groove and keep it up for a verse, keep it up for another verse and then the tension will finally break on the chorus, and McVie will play some catchy, memorable lick.

No one has mentioned the balls Mick keeps on his drum stool yet.

Fleetwood admits in his book that sometimes he was guilty of turning a beat around...playing the snare on one and three instead of two and four. I notice it on certain tracks, but this minor dereliction actually comes across as major genius.
I would say he is a 'good' drummer for a great band that bears his name. He does the job, he fits the bill and he brings his own personality to the mix.

If he came up with the drum parts for those songs, yes, a terrific drummer.

Thing is, he's not really a stylist; unlike Paul Thompson, Ringo or Christophe Schneider, you can't tell it's him with just two bars of skin beating. I think that's what makes a great rock drummer--inflection, tone, identity.
