That Mercury Rev ad on Pitchfork today

Lists a bunch of positive reviews from NME, Jane(!) and Rolling Stone before mentioning the "5.5" Pitchfork gave it followed by a WHAT THE F???

Island did the same thing for a Bob Marley album back in the day. One ad listed all these raves and the one on the next page featured a line from Lester Bangs' dis with nothing around it. V2 be calling pfork out...on pfork!!!

(note: you may not see it when you go on. They've got that whole roulette wheel thing goin' with the ads. Not complaining.

there's a toronto alt-weekly critic whose zero star reviews have made it into many a broadsheet as well as the "now on sale" album ads in the music section of the same paper. its a good-humored and honest strategy, i think.

Yeah the Holland Oates Neighborhoodie dude has a look on his face that I imagine is about 50% joy and 50% immutable terror. Like he's being secretly raped by some sort of gremlin hidden in his pants. It's just disgusting...I almost prefer the I love J. Lo girl

yes they should bring back the suicide girls ads if they're going to do that to us just to balance it out

You know kids these days. Always running around buying things. But what are they buying? Shouldn't they be spending that cash on something important? Like CDs? From your record label? There are millions of people out there at this very second filling their checkbook ledgers with purchases of target-marketed mediocrity. At Pitchfork, we're trying to cure their temporary insanity by pointing them in the direction of something that will stay with them their whole lives. Something they can be proud of. Good music. Indie label music.

Since 1995, Pitchfork has been churning out four record reviews every weekday. But unlike monster-media hype machines, we write about music with artistic integrity. And most of it's coming out on independent record labels.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 10 April 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

That album didn't deserve a 5.5. Not by a fair distance.

One-hit wonder that Jimmy Eat World fans got into after those guys sold out. Sounded like the last minute of Odelay.
