I just bought a really, really bad album

It's "origin ol. 1" by The Soundtrack of Our Lives. I was bored, I wanted something, I'd heard they were like The Dears (who I quite like), the cover looked OK. Ah, fuck it: it's the worst trad-rock, worst lyrics, no hooks, sung by a fat Swede with a beard...

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

shoulda been tipped off by the band name

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you take it back?

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

buyer beware

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate it when this happens and it rarely does any more because I usually listen to everything first. But last year I bought Rachel Goswell's album without having heard it because, you know, it's Rachel Goswell! I love Mojave 3 and Slowdive! How bad could it be? ARGHGHGHGH!

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

No, can't take it back to mean old Tower (cos it's opened). I'll notch it up to experience...but it's funny, that frantic feeling as you skip through the songs hoping that track 1, tyrack 2, track 3...were just anomalies...

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

How much did you pay for it? The guy at R0x In Yr Head is asking 9.99.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like this album (or at least I did the couple of times I listened to it). Not as good as earlier albums of theirs tho.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel your pain Paul . . . and I kind of want to get this anyways. I like their first two albums, but the last one I thought was a bit lame. Who here can tell me what?

Baron Saturday, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the first two albums are the best. Agreed that Behind the Music is a bit meh.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

$6.99@Tower. Probably why I went for it - some first week promo thing I guess. Still, I'm poor at the moment!

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You should have done your homework, paulhw. The only people around here who like STOOL except for Baron Saturday and Shakey are me and Geir.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

buyer bepwned

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

oh $7 is ok. You won't be taking much of a loss then when you trade it back at another store.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i dropped 7 bucks for this thing over lunch hour, but haven't listened to it yet. i'm a little worried about it now, but then i kinda liked Behind the Music.

jonviachicago, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't tell if this thread makes me want to throw the promo on more or less

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this was going to be about daft punk

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

no everyone downloaded that one

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I just went out and bought it. Sorry about your misfortune, but I'm glad for the reminder. So far it's not so bad, anthemic arena rock, which I don't mind at all.

Baron Saturday, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm now on song 4, and happy to report to my three fellow fans, so far at least, I think this one might be a comeback after the last one. It's not a psychprog monster like the second one (unfortunately); more a collection of unusually catchy songs like the first one. So far. . . .

Baron Saturday, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't understand why everyone hates the rachel goswell album so much. it's not great but it's not terrible either..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing wrong with a fat Swede with a beard!

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

paulhw, are you in NYC? If you can't get a good used price, maybe I'll buy the darned thing off you.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Origin vol. 1 is really not as bad as some people on this thread are making it out to be

i am nervous (cochere), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The other album I bought with Origin 1 is the new Damon & Naomi with the guy from Ghost or White Heaven, not sure. I think it might be the best thing they've done since the last Galaxie 500. It turned out to be a good twofer. Thanks, Paul!

Baron Saturday, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yay, just bought the new D&N so i'm glad to hear that

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, Damon and Naomi made *another* album with Kurihara???!? I must get this if true - the last one is great, and witnessing Kurihara rock mad heavy psych shit on the last Ghost tour was one of the greatest guitar-centric pleasures of my life.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Shakey, this one is way, way better than the last one. Kurihara plays all the electric guitar on the album; Damon just plays acoustic. They have a trumpet and a sax player, too. It's fucking sick, to be honest.

Baron Saturday, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Not even the cover "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is bad.

Baron Saturday, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone who buys CDs from Tower Records has no right to call an album bad.

Mr. Harvey Weinstein (mr harvey weinstein), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at the Virgin in Union Square tonight test-driving that CD. It didn't pass the test, though I so wanted it to. Especially when the sticker suggested "Beatlesque," which is usually a kiss of death I suppose. (There it's $9.99 but you get a DVD bundled with it.)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the new D&N is incredible.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always been curious about this band, since two of 'em were former members of the amazing Union Carbide Productions, the best bunch of Stooges/MC5 disciples EVAH.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing I've heard by them is anywhere near as great as Union Carbide. That's not to say it's bad though!

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

God, Union Carbide Productions fucking ruled. Can't wait for those damn reissues!

Quit glaring at Ian Riese-Moraine! He's mentally fraught! (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 17 March 2005 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't wait? Are there plans to reissue that stuff?

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Reissues?!?!?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 17 March 2005 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

You betchyer fanny! I think it's all coming out in the form of a box set.

Quit glaring at Ian Riese-Moraine! He's mentally fraught! (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No way.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

God...I've been obsessing over that first Union Carbide record all week, as it happens. Any further info available on that purported box? I swear, that record may damn well be the equal of Funhouse...it certainly ain't no pallid copyist shit.

Dark Horse, Friday, 18 March 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess it's to be expected from a bunch of Swedes, but the lyrics on this disc are a howlerfest, even more than previous discs - which weren't exactly Dylan (Thomas or Bob, take your pick). The first few tunes are pretty majestic; then this puppy runs out of gas. Does anybody else think he's doing a Calvin Johnson impersonation in the choruses of "Midnight's Children" (and are you fucking kidding me with that song title?)

Also, supporting my theory that foreigners (and Bob Pollard) pick strange words because they sound cool together: "Transcendental Suicide" scans exactly the same as "Independent Luxury".

southern lights (southern lights), Friday, 18 March 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah, a particularly amazing Jurek-ism in AMG on this one:

TSOOL has arrived after a decade of carefully and meticulously crafting a passionate and compelling rock music that incorporates everything it finds genuine and necessary in pursuit of a music and lyricism that powerfully and beautifully articulates that which is less than obvious.

southern lights (southern lights), Friday, 18 March 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Excellent album. Wonderful songs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

southern lights you are too picky about lyrics. go read some wallace stevens.

certified as an elder, Friday, 18 March 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

but I don't like wallace stevens!

southern lights, Friday, 18 March 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the iffy lyrics were cancelled out by the inappropriately portly and limited-in-vocal-range lead singer? I am serious.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW, it seems to me Ebbot is looking more than ever like David Brent on the cover.

And let me ask: am I the only who thinks they are a little sloppy live?
