Talk about Double Leopards music

I see threads about sold out CDr's, upcoming shows, blah blah blah. Here and there people mention Halve Maen, but as far as I can see, there isn't a single thread dedicated to these magnificent geniuses. I'm in love with the afforementioned and want to pick up their earlier releases but those rich noize bastards always get ridiculous when A Pebble Unmapped or Axe Helve shows up on eBay. Which CDrs are the ones to hear? Who exactly are these people? Are they good live? Immerse me in the waters of Double Leopards, thanx.

new fuck all y'all answers

jared, Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Are the skygreen leopards part of this shit? Them then.

gravelly run, Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

you are better off asking this on the noize board.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck the noize board ghettoizm. and they've got nothing to do with skygreen leopards.

i haven't really kept up with the cdrs - but "halve maen" is top, "a pebble" and "axe helve" are both good, and the polyamory cdr is excellent.

i think "the axe helve" went for over $150 recently. i can't fathom why eclipse would reissue the relatively easy to find "halve maen" as a double instead of "axe" and "pebble". lame.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 17 March 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been wanting to hear them for awhile now since learning that one of the members is also in hototogisu.

eman (eman), Thursday, 17 March 2005 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

well what are the skygreen leaopards part of then?n are they jewelled antlers? what difference does it make?

gravelly runs, Thursday, 17 March 2005 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

prm, Thursday, 17 March 2005 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

skygreen leopards are jewelled antler people, yeah.

and marcia became a member of the hototogisu starting around "befriending demons," i think?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 17 March 2005 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the Leopards' "Blind Destroyer" 3" cdr, on Chondritic Sound, is one of their best yet. potent, consequent, and concise. the Polyamory collection is hit-or-miss but contains some outstanding material. the Leopards' self-released reissue of the WFMU sessions widely circulated via p2p is essential but not as refined as the two Eclipse LPs. can't remember much about the other cdrs or the U-Sound set. The Axe Helve is very much a formative LP, of more historical rather than musical interest - their TMT-meet-Total intuitions hadn't quite gelled yet. but both sides of the LP the Leopards split with Son of Earth-Flesh on Bone is excellent.

all the new Hototogisu stuff has been great. Bassett and Bower were made to work together. kinda like Campbell Kneale and Neil Campbell.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Thursday, 17 March 2005 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

what's TMT?

eman (eman), Thursday, 17 March 2005 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine TMT is a reference to Taj Mahal Travelers.

winged I sing, Thursday, 17 March 2005 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, Blind Destroyer is a great listen.

dronez are not ours to eat, dronez are not ours to wear (smile), Thursday, 17 March 2005 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike from Double Leopards also records solo as Workbench and is part of the trio White Rock with the dudes from Mouthus.

I don't think greh had any dl 3"s tonight, dammit.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 March 2005 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i still haven't spun that 3" yet. i have some weird fear about putting it in my player, as if it'll spin into the void of the machine. i also recommend the Urban Concussion pic disc. i don't recommend taking pharmaceuticals when listening tho.

imbidimts, Thursday, 17 March 2005 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i gots that.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 March 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That Taj Mahal Travellers comparison is OTM.

I've only heard Halve Maen so far, and it's a real delightful headtrip. Very much like sliding down an mossy tube into the underworld, head tickled by tree roots, catapillars talking, etc. This would make a great soundtrack to Herbert Read's "The Green Child."

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 17 March 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I still haven't heard Taj Mahal Travellers either. I imagine them to be real atonal or something.

eman (eman), Thursday, 17 March 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

TMT are not harsh on the skull. Jorel, the DL 3" on Chondritic is souled owt.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 17 March 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

there's nothing quite like Taj Mahal Travellers. that we, the non-trust fund collector scum, can finally hear and physically possess a copy "August 1974" is still reason for great joy.

imbidimts, Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

did they break up? anyone? i read something about one of the side projects that implied that double leopards are no longer a going concern...

Beatrix Kiddo, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

yeah they broke up

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

dang!

then again i'd rather listen to hototogisu than double leopards, really, but i did like to throw their cds on every now and again.

Beatrix Kiddo, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

religious knives >>>>> hototogisu

ian, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

No. But I'll concede that I'm enjoying RK's latest singles round-up(Resin) way, WAY more than I did their last one.

Beatrix Kiddo, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

religious knives >>>>> hototogisu

ian, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 17 April 2008 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

hototogisu is cool but once you've heard two of the latest slew of albums you kind of heard them all...i still love prayer rug excorcism though

i was sceptical about religious knives new direction but the latest album, Resin, which is pretty much a comp of earlier tapes convinced me. great record, superb garage-y versions of earlier drone tunes. wish i could go to no fun grr

rizzx, Thursday, 17 April 2008 06:28 (eighteen years ago)

except for the early acoustic hippie stuff which i'm totally into.

Which albums were these? I'd be interested.

ian, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

sleep, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

i can post white wind over at the place if anyone needs it. hell, i could probably just post it here because it's out of print and who is rural electrification program going to sue?

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 17 April 2008 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

i mean it.

ian, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

I'm looking forward to hearing acoustic hippie Hototogisu! I have a couple of their cd's and they are far from acoustic hippie. Sometimes I like them, it's just that there's never really a good time to put them on

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

I think I mention this every time the subject of Hototogisu comes up on this board, but I was at one of the gigs excerpted on PRAYER RUG EXORCISM and it really was one of the most intense, ritualistic performances I've ever seen - def. helped that was I wasn't prepared for the whole volume/sensory overload trip, having only seen a more mellow Bower w/ Vibracathedral previously. Last month's Skullflower gig, at the same venue, just didn't come close in terms of impact/effect, which makes me think there's something magical and potent about the Bower/Bassett combo.

I dig the earlier, solo hippy Hototogisu recs too, esp. JAPANESE OOF! but in terms of sweet sonic tinkling mantra fug I actually prefer most of the Sunroof discs from roundabout the same time, esp. BLISS. I do think it's a shame that there's not much to distinguish between recent Skullflower/Sunroof!/Hototogisu discs but I think at this point I'm following Bower through all the twists and turns of his work - I'm sure he'll find a path out of the noize cul de sac soon enough...

I loved REMAINS, the Religious Knives compilation on No Fun (kinda like bargain basement electronic Xenakis, in parts) but have not been that thrilled by their most recent song-y stuff - I think they've fucked w/ a winning formula by expanding to a quartet.

Double Leopards are sublime, of course - here's a nice clip of their penultimate perf, at Thurston Moore's Nightmare Before Christmas ATP in 2006, which again I was lucky enuff to attend:

all this talk about post-DL projects, and nothing about Sinking Infinities, early Leopard Jon Chapman's fantastic duo with James Currin? Eternal Music on a starvation budget and, unlike most game efforts at same, fairly stunning. if i'm not mistaken, Jon is also behind the very worthy Co, Inc. which may even have been the alias he used in the Leopards. i have to check that.

i know Jon is credited on The Axe Helve and the SOE split 12". at what point exactly did he leave the Leopards and head for New Zealand? Soulless Dust is credited to "MMMC" - Marcia, Mike, Maya and ? is the 'C' Chapman?

Mr. Hal Jam, Friday, 18 April 2008 04:58 (eighteen years ago)

answering my own question, the 'C' has to be Chris Gray (of Endless Boogie). i thought he joined the Leopards much later, but Jon must have already been gone by the time of Soulless Dust. which means he wasn't in on the recording of Pebbles, either. ok.

Endless Boogie fkn rule.

Mr. Hal Jam, Friday, 18 April 2008 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

Welcoming the dark with Halve Maen.
It's been a few years since I've listened to it.
Perfect record for the moment.

Trip Maker, Monday, 8 November 2010 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

double leopards were pretty unstoppable as a live band for a time there, circa 2003-04.
