Soma, What happened?

Back when I started buying techno for serious (97-98) I couldn't get enough soma stuff. 'Dark Forces', 'Step Back', 'Pressure Theme', 'Bad Coffee' etc etc etc. All excellent stuff. The housier end of the spectrum was great too. And daft punk even had some releases on the label. Now all their releases are pretty damn dull. What happened!

I think the success of Funk d'Void's 'Diabla' as a big crossover tune made them feel like that had to swing for the fences with every release, and as a result all the latest stuff is kind of overblown crossover attempts. Weaksauce.

I'll keep listening to Psychotrance vol4 (mixed by slam...my fave mix cd these days) I guess.

whoa, i think soma's had a few really interesting years - definitely very hit or miss, but they're taking some chances. and alex smoke's new record is so goddamn good that i'm willing to forgive all kinds of misses.

i don't really think that. maas = ewan pearson in early glossy techno phase.

also that mixtape lacks "ron hardy's resurrection" by MFON which it would need to function as a "best of" but that track is really more filterhouse along the lines of crydamoure, highly rec'd go get it.

'Winters In The City' is surely the best thing to come out on Soma since 'Diabla' and it may even eclipse that

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 17 March 2005 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i forgot about the vector lovers - need to dig that out again. plus soma gets credit for commissioning a remix from wighnomy bros (even though the mix, for slam's "this world," admittedly isn't their best).

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 17 March 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Where can I hear this stuff, anyone up for posting a mix/sampler of any kind?

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Envoy - Move On (Alex Smoke Dub) - on Soma Dubs v. 2 - is best track ever!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

indeed. (and i really dug the original envoy stuff too - though it just seemed to appear into a void.)

Soma are celebrating 20 years by putting out remixes of their big tracks. Orde and Stuart are touring to celebrate - saw them earlier this year. Interview with them about Soma on here http://www.welove-music.com/we-love-radio

I picked up Chaser - Game On! the other day too.
