that dude is the most overhyped writer of our time. talk about a paper-based sleeping pill.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a beautiful cover!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 17 March 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

What Matos said!

Who is JT LeRoy? Never heard of him.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

that dude is the most overhyped writer of our time.

No, that would be Dave Eggers.

That cover is great. JT Leroy is not.

Er, I've never heard of him.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Saturday, 19 March 2005 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Protege of Mary Gaitskill, among others. For a while, was thought by some to be at least partly fiction. Backstory: a child pimped by his junkie mother, as they traveled around. Has published at least one book. I haven't read it, but the Mary G. connection is a strong incentive to do so. (A person billed as) JT Leroy now reads and performs with (a couple of?) musicians now, so I guess he is as at least as qualified as Hornby or Mickey Hart to do this.

actually, he's famous for *not* performing or reading. he always has others read for him and his "band", Thistle, performs songs he writes (bad songs, i'll add). and his novel, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things was just made into a movie starring Asia Argento.

and re: Dave Eggers. yeah, eggers is pretty hyped, but i'll take his writing in Spin over anything Leroy has produced any day of the week.

Buh-but the review I read (where? Been a while) said the perfomer was JT, so it must be true! (Did pan Sparrow.)Asia Argento *and* Mary Gaitskill! Pretty cool connections for an imaginary friend.

Published two books in fact . It's not out in Europe, I think. I quite liked his debut but it's not as good as the hype likes you to believe.

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Saturday, 19 March 2005 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't read his writing, I just like the cover. though I wonder what he'll pick for inclusion, given the sensibility I'm aware of (he wrote a Zwan feature for Spin a couple years ago, nothing horrible but nothing spectactular either).

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 19 March 2005 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a feature on him in the backpages of the LA Times a few months ago. I'd never heard of him but the piece was prime in its idiocy passed off as something to be taken seriously. Pics of this little guy, in a blonde wig and girls clothing, taking advantage of the suspension of disbelief of the reporter in order to dissemble.
Was said to have gone about stealing items, sample perfumes from an event for the alleged intelligentsia, to later give to homeless people.

Much talk about pedophilia and transvestism, being buggered senseless by truckdrivers outside roadhouses off interstate America as a way to literary art and essentially, being as queer and arch as can be for the sake of it.

Demonstrated why the publishing of what would have appeared to be satire fifteen years ago has become an accidental symptom of modern journalism.
