so little paypal

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It loads slowwwwwly and its 1.29 euro per track! Not a horrible deal considering how hard to find some of this stuff is in the states, but not a godsend either.

deej., Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

omg

basquiat (disco stu), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but I certainly won't mind having a few of their vinyl only tracks on my iPod!

James Jung, Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.kompakt-mp3.net/ is the direct url.

basquiat (disco stu), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm tempted, but for in Europe, for not that much more I can have the actual CD or vinyl - I'm no good at paying for mp3s.

Maybe for new things that sound great on excerpt streaming.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

224kbps!

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

not exactly extensive is it? 22 records or am i missing something?

stirmonster, Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

so is it like itunes in that you can't use them for anyting else (burning, etc) or are they just honest to goodness mp3s like bleep that let you do whatever you want with the file?

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you are missing something, stirmonster.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

(22 is the list of recent releases)

I think it's got their whole back catalogue, plus a lot that they distribute too.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

stirmonster: select 'back catalogue'

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

MP3's don't have drm, so you could do whatever you want with them. Pretty stupid to use 224, would be better using alt preset standard.

svend (svend), Thursday, 17 March 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

What bitrate does 'alt preset standard' mean?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Variable. It uses what it needs.

svend (svend), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Variable what though? On iTunes I still have to select a bitrate even if I'm on VBR (which then functions as the minimum I think).

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Never mind - I guess you were just saying they should use VBR.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks! missed that 'back catalogue' link. not that i'm gong to buy any mp3s anyway.

stirmonster, Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

This is great! I will gladly pay for some, especially if they've been previously vinyl only (are you listening Kompakt???).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

and 224 VBR is really great. good job to them!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit.. there's going to be a very poor Mr Chewshabadoo soon, and a very pissed off Miis Chewshabadoo.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 17 March 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole back catalog!

!!!

Yay!

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 17 March 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Good lord. And here I thought Bleep would be the death of my bank account...

So, what's absolutely essential? I never thought I'd have a reasonable opportunity to get high-quality copies of most of this music- import vinyl is crazy expensive- so this is a godsend. So far I've picked up the Superpitcher "Happiness" remix 12" and both Rex the Dog 12"s, but I'm sure there are loads of singles I know nothing about (especially since I've only gotten into Kompakt over the last 16 months or so and have little knowledge of what came before).

Telephonething, Friday, 18 March 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is Kompakt 114?!?

willem (willem), Friday, 18 March 2005 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Get Wasserman's Hot Love (Schaffelfeiber 12") and The MFA's "The Difference it Makes."

James Jung, Friday, 18 March 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Get the Ferenc "Yes Sir, I Can Hardcore (Mayer Mix)".

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm broke - doesn't someone wanna buy kompakt 116 (the field's 'thought vs. action') and send it to me?

jermaine (jnoble), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

caveat to JJ: get the SUPERPITCHER REMIX of "difference it makes" NOT the original. orig would be a waste of 1.29 \\ sez me

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

My favourite Kompakt track not easily available on CD (and which I've heard) is probably the A2 track on Mayer's "Pensum" 12" (the sexy one that sorta fades in and out). Also the Wasserman mix of Kohncke & Dorau's "Durch Die Nacht" and Mayer & Voigt's "Bring It Back".

I prefer the Superpitcher Mix of "The Difference It Makes" but I still think the original is quite good.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 19 March 2005 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is the Orb's "Komplot?"

James Jung, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i am so tempted to get all the kreisel 99s...

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ha! i set out, back in 99, to buy all the kreisels. i think i got about 5 of them before i realized how foolish a 52-week commitment was going to be. now, of course, i rue my levelheadedness.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I just bought six new tracks from four different records, potentially saving me € 34,50! This is great! And they're all on 320 kbps...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

A few complaints: the previews are short and poor quality. Best try and find them first on Juno, and listen there. Also, once you've got your new tunes playing in iTunes, they're ALL CAPS.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

because they are more important!

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

zis is because zey are so large! zee kompakt, everysing zey do is big!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
So I'm looking around on the Kompakt MP3 site for the first time (after listening to Today by Superpitcher, I really want the full length version of Wurz + Blosse by Wighnomy Bros.), and I wondered why it's only available in 224 kbps when other tracks are available in 320kbps. Any clues? Any success/horror stories with this? Pretty smooth transactions? Tell me of your experiences and why "only" 224.

matt2 (matt2), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I think all the label heads were asked to rip their catalogue items, and different ones did it at different bit rates. I think 224 was the minimum required; a few others apparently did it higher.

I have spent an unconscionable amount of money there.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

224 VBR is excellent - I'm very picky, but it's very hard (probably impossible) to do a blind comparison and pick a 320 CBR over it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

Thank fuck this website doesn't work properly in Firefox - I haven't spent a single penny there yet.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Interesting Chews. I was gonna try to purchase some stuff using Firefox. At what point does it stop working properly?

Thanks for the informative bit about the bit rates. I fear I too will soon become (more) poor at the hands of Kompakt. But the money could certainly go to a much worse place.

matt2 (matt2), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

It doesn't play the music on Firefox, at least not on a Mac. (When it does play music, say, on Safari, the clips are short and low-quality.) (If you can find the same tune on Juno, better listen over there.)

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

So, as a result I've saved a tonne of cash and just used S0u1SeeK instead!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

But I would like to stop my teefing ways.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I think you need the Quicktime plugin for Firefox to play the clips- I haven't bothered with installing it yet, but the rest of the site works just fine, up to and including purchasing.
