Yikes this is good stuff! I had no idea it existed. I like the Grateful Dead alright, but listening to these 2 bands makes me wonder why they ever got back together.

None of you have heard them, have you?

They sound like amazing jazz and (from the sound of it) like mostly a black group with a Jerry Garcia thrown in. His playing is far different than the way he plays in GD and he doesn't do most of the singing, either.

Check out Furthur and download Legion of Mary's last show: 1975-07-04 and any Reconstruction you can find.

I might prefer the horns in Reconstruction, but I prefer the gurgly black guy singing in Legion of Mary to the smoother black guy type singing in Reconstruction.

Legion of Mary are great; I really wish they would properly release some of their shows.

Reconstruction are definitely funkier, but Legion of Mary has so classic versions of Tough Mama, Harder They Come, and others. Jerry Garcia played great rhythm guitar in both bands (as well as lead obv.).

Thank god someone's heard 'em on ILM and LIKES THEM! I'm so used to people trashing anything remotely related to hippies around here. This stuff in particular seems like it would be cross-culturally accepted and yet it's totally rare, isn't it? There isn't a single LOM album is there? If there is a Reconstruction album, I'm buying it immediately.

I am pretty sure there is neither, or at least there was nothing last time I checked. There may be a Legion of Mary track on one of Merle Saunders' "Fire Up Plus" CDs.

Someone on Furthur chat suggest I check out Garcia and Saunders stuff if I like LOM and Reconstruction. I just now realized that he's the smooth voice in Reconstruction, right? Any idea who's singing with the gurgly voice on LOM?

I am pretty sure it's Saunders on both LOM and reconstruction. The Saunders/Garcia discs (the Keystone shows, I think there are three discs total) are good, but none of it is as funky or fun as Legion of Mary or Reconstruction. Vol. 1 is the best Keystone disc, IMO.

Reconstruction is thee fuckin' shit!

Listen, this is how I imagine good jazz records sound, but I don't know what they hell jazz records sound like this.

Could you point me in the direction of ANY JAZZ that sounds like Reconstruction?

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 19 March 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Any jazz at all...

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OKay, in order to open up the floodgates for jazz suggestions, here you can download some Reconstrcution shows:

http://gdlive.com/jerryshn/recon79-03-08/
http://gdlive.com/jerryshn/recon79-07-08/

The third (and my favorite) is on Furthur, but they are all nearly equal. I think there are only 3 in total.

Now, once you download this kickass shit tell me what jazz it reminds you of so that I can go buy it. It's what I always imagined Miles Davis would sound like, but doesn't according to the albums I've bought so far.

YAY! Thank you.

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I REALLY like the horns. Jerry was an awesome guitarist, though! And his playing with Reconstruction is way different. It's actually very hard to play like him (or Zappa), two often underrated guitarists, I think.

yah his playing is just beautiful on this show. where can i find legion of mary?

Towards the bottom... all the shows marked "lom" as well.

The stuff I have I got from Furthur. I have yet to download these shows, so I'm not sure how good they are (though I would assume if they are on gdlive.com, they are of great quality. Possibly soundboard even).
