"Sex Machine" of course.

There's also an Elvis Costello song, a Bob Marley song, a Led Zeppelin song, and maybe even a Camper Van Beethoven song, none of which I can name right now. What have you got for me?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Strong by Robbie Williams. I'll leave others to decide whether it is great or not (the lyric in question alone is swaying me in the direction of "not").

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely Chuck Brown requested a trip the bridge or two.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

And early morning when I wake up
I look like Kiss, but without the makeup
And that's a great line to take it to the bridge

I still think that Robbie Williams line is classic.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably any number of Stereo MCs songs.

ffirehorse, Friday, 18 March 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The Doobie Brothers once sang of taking it to the streets, but not any bridges.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Roxy Music's "Song for Europe," when Ferry hesitates pretentiously while singing the line, "And the bridge it.....SIGHS," followed by baroque instrumental hoedown?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

'Felicity' by Orange Juice. awesome song.

Lee F# (fsharp), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

surely someone at some point put this meme together with chappaquiddick.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Parliament: "Up for the Down Stroke" and "Funkentelechy"

Lil Kim: "Can't Fuck with the Queen Bee"

The Time: "Data Bank"

Fugees: "Killing Me Softly with His Song"

too many songs by LL Cool J to mention

ffirehorse, Friday, 18 March 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Don't Try and Hide It," J. Geils Band

"should we take it to the bridge?"
"yeah, take it to the bridge!"
"should we take it to the bridge?"
"yeah, throw it off the bridge!"

and then they never take it to the bridge. in fact, I think that IS the bridge.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Trouble Funk...I think it's "Part D" on Live.

Quit glaring at Ian Riese-Moraine! He's mentally fraught! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 19 March 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

'Felicity' by Orange Juice. awesome song

I tried to remember the name of this song and could only come up with "The Bridge". Which is ironic.

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Saturday, 19 March 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ode to Billie Joe" takes something to the bridge ...

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 19 March 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the great thing about James Brown's bridges is of course that they ain't bridges, they're just modulations to the four chord usually. I was always confused as a young kid about those tunes that were "Part 1 and 2" because they had no second part, then I figured out they were just...modulations to the bridge.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Songs I mentioned in the thread question that I couldn't quite name at the time:

Elvis Costello, "Pidgin English"
Led Zeppelin, 'The Crunge"
Camper Van Beethoven, "Joe Stalin's Cadillac"
Bob Marley, "Zion Train"

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 20 March 2005 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Stetsasonic - "Speaking of a Girl named Suzy"

"she had a shape no man would ever forget
and on the back of her shorts, uhn, take me to the bridge"

tremendoid (tremendoid), Sunday, 20 March 2005 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait - no one has mentioned Flying Lizards version of Sex Machine yet.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Sunday, 20 March 2005 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's that confounded bridge?

Robert Plant (Tommy), Monday, 21 March 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Wanna buy a bridge?

Ian Riese-Moraine. Sweeter than a lorry load of white Toblerones. (Eastern Mantr, Monday, 21 March 2005 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hourglass by Squeeze, of course.

caspar (caspar), Monday, 21 March 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(Which is probably the only instance bringing It to a literal bridge)

caspar (caspar), Monday, 21 March 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Full directions included in this one:

They're justified, and they're ancient,
And they drive an ice cream van.
(just roll it from the top!)
They're justified and they're ancient,
With still no master plan.
(to the bridge, to the bridge, to the bridge now!)
The last train left an hour ago,
They were singing "All aboard"
All bound for Mu Mu Land,
Then someone starting screaming "Turn up the Strobe"
(bring the beat back!)

OleM (OleM), Monday, 21 March 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, I always thought "Parts 1 and 2" referred to the fact that certain songs were too long for one side of a single, so they'd be faded out and faded back in on the other side (the B side was "Part 2")

As for the bridge in James Brown songs, well, yeah, they're bridge, they're just a really minimal ones. Usually not only does the chord modulate, but also the rhythm changes.
