"Charming Man," no doubt.

I like 'em both, but with back to the wall I say "Harborcoat."

...and 'This Charming Man' man wins by a knock out in the first round, not even a contest. wait... there's blood everywhere... oh my god i think that we might have a fatality on our hands. yes, 'Harborcoat' is dead! 'Harborcoat' is dead! horrifying scenes here. surely the person who thought to pit an average REM song against a superb Smiths song must bear the responsibility for this brutal tragedy. oh good god look at all the blood. won't somebody think of the children?! please god, somebody think of the children!

etc

Ain't nothing average about most anything on those first few REM albums. And "Harborcoat" is a grebt one.

"Harborcoat" is the winnah.

Lee F# OTM.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

damn skippy.

Damn. I have to go with Harborcoat here. TCM is jaunty and fun...as is Harborcoat. But Harborcoat wins on the strength of its heritage.

Can I still listen to both?

The thing about Harborcoat is, it has this really unique feel to it: in the very first bit, the drums sound like they're rushing and the whole thing is about to fall apart, then the verses have this kind of syncopated rhythm guitar riff, then there this that little funky workout before the chorus and then, when the relatively conventional but incredible catchy chorus finally hits its like the sun breaking through the clouds.

1. This Charming Man (the version on Hatful of Hollow)
2. Harborcoat
3. This Charming Man (the other version)
