Sugarcube

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 19 March 2005 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I love "Stockholm Syndrome" (that is #5 from I Can Hear The Heart.. right??) - great choice

Normally my pick would be "From A Motel 6" but I've been having "Moby Octopad" in my head lately and the first one on Electr-O-Pura too. Always forget song titles.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Saturday, 19 March 2005 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. My bad. I love that one. Great tune.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 19 March 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"Detouring America with Horns". They used to close shows with this pretty regularly and it was always a perfect end.

Though "Stockholm Syndrome" is a great choice.

bill neil (inabillity), Saturday, 19 March 2005 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"the guitar solo on "We're an American Band" " - the guitar solo on "Pablo and Andrea"

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

steve OTM re Nowhere Near

but since he took my choice, I'll pick another: Our Way to Fall

fakebook - you tore me down
may i sing with me - detouring america with horns
painful - nowhere near
elecr-o-pura - pablo and andrea
i can hear the heart beating as one - sugarcube
and then nothing turned itself inside out - cherry chapstick
summer sun - season of the shark

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 19 March 2005 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't of a song with better lyrics than the crying of lot g . . . also we're an american band, the summer, shadows, green light, sea urchins, blue line swinger, everyday, motel 6 (the radio version off of the what's up matador compilation), double dare (slow version), madeline . . . i can only make an adequate disc if i choose a mood, too many to be skipped otherwise

That simulated Velvet Underground jam they performed in "I Shot Andy Warhol."

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 19 March 2005 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Pablo & Andrea" by a great length

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 19 March 2005 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"double dare" - though i can't argue with "pablo and andrea."

rajeev (rajeev), Saturday, 19 March 2005 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Pablo And Andrea. Especially on warm spring days like these.

RickyT (RickyT), Saturday, 19 March 2005 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't get that pablo and andrea love. it's a good song but ylt did so much better. it sounds a little cliché. maybe it is that country component i am slightly allergic to.

there are a couple of songs with a similar mood from summer sun which i prefer. the double pack season of the shark and today is the day eg is excellent spring time music.

my overall fave is still blue line swinger i suppose. an unsurpassed hypnotic guitar drone monster.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 19 March 2005 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Out the Window" or "Cherry Chapstick". "Stockholm Syndrome" is probably my least favourite tune on my least favourite YLT album.

poo for album

Ride The Tiger - whatever
new wave hot dogs - slightly less whatever but whatever
President Yo La Tengo - Barnaby, Hardly Working
Fakebook - The Summer
May I Sing With Me - Mushroom Cloud Of Hiss
Painful - Big Day Coming (loud version)
Electr-O-Pura - Blue Line Swinger
I Can Hear The Two Hearts Beating - Damage
And Nothing... - Saturday
Summer Sun - Little Eyes (though we're getting dangerously close to 'whatever' again here, but this song grabbed me when they played here on the pre-election tour - with Dave Schramm playing a solo on it! Fuckin' ruled)

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 19 March 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I will get the box set, only £8.99 on Amazon.

Green Arrow

Aaron A., Saturday, 19 March 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: Yo La Tengo's "I Heard You Looking" vs Yo La Tengo's "Blue Line Swinger"

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 19 March 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Green Arrow is lovely but much of the credit for that tune has to go to Lambchop's Mark Niehaus for the gorgeous pedal steel. And the cicadas.
Autumn Sweater is great, a real slow burner. Moby Octapad is deeply groovy and I dig the bossa of Centre of the Universe.
But yes, Stockholm Syndrome probably wins it.

They've done some great covers over the years, esp Dylan's I Threw It All Away, Cat Stevens' Here Comes My Baby, Sun Ra's Nuclear War and, of course, Daniel Johnston's Speeding Motorcycle.

It's gotta be "Blue Line Swinger," but "Deeper into Movies" is one of the greatest song titles ever.

I fogot how much I like Somebody's Baby.

Blue Line Swinger, without a doubt. It takes me places.

Their only copped directly from a book (Pauline Kael)? (not like Pynchon "Lot G")

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Summer"

Burr (Burr), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tom Courtenay" seconded, especially because of "Eleanor Bron" namecheck.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

actually maybe i like 'center of gravity' more than the ones i mentioned upthread.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 21 March 2005 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

My honest answer is much like many folks. Unswervingly "Stockholm Syndrome", great song, melody and the guitar solo absolutely shreds. Honourable mentions to "Flying Lesson (Hot Chicken #1)", "Spec Bebop" for driving and "Tears Are In Your Eyes" for weeping!

-the-night-watch- (-the-night-watch-), Monday, 21 March 2005 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Summer" or maybe "Worrying Thing." "Stockholm Syndrome" is one of those songs that sounds so good you think it's a cover.

Hard to find much to argue with, solid list. Though I would personally bump "Jazz", "Glitter" and "Here You Are" each up one level.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 18:33 (five years ago)

my opo is definitely Let’s Save Tony Orlando’s House

brimstead, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 21:12 (five years ago)

re: closers, I think "story of jazz" is really the only "meh" for me. they're great at closers! "speeding motorcyle" isn't a closer, however — Fakebook ends with the lovely NRBQ cover "What Can I Say?"

tylerw, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 21:24 (five years ago)

Being baseball fans, they ought to end an album with "Goose Goosage" or "Al Hrabosky."

clemenza, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 21:27 (five years ago)

Bc of the 2-fer CD I think of the closer on President/New Wave Hot Dogs as being “The Asparagus Song,” which I love.
