80s hits where the 7" version is superior to the 12" version

Monsoon - Ever so Lonely (they try, and fail, to expand on this)
Talk Talk - Life What You Make It (dance element, ie the "Human League's Human" style drumming, is taken away completely)
Steve Arrington - Feel So Real (lasts forever, and contains sudden, patchy inserts of "nothing")
Gwen Guthrie - Ain't Nothin Goin On But the Rent (7" has funkier bassline)

What others??

I've just thought of another: Yazoo - Only You

The "euphoric" synth-piano really starts to grate after about 5 minutes.....

OOPS. That should have been "Don't Go"

Sometimes the 12-inch is just redundant. They don't add anything, and this is just not the case with 80s music, but one hit that comes to mind is "Electric Avenue" from Eddy Grant. My stepfather bought the 12-inch and played it every day, a few times in a row. He was a teacher and he'd come home after school and play it, which was cool at first but then annoying after a while.

Well, my choice, "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" certainly adds something. In this case, it adds roughly 3-4 minutes of the bass playing the same note over and over over the same beat at the start of the song before the song starts properly.

Cocteau Twins - "Sugar Hiccup" and "Pearly Dewdrops' Drops"

Let's keep the afterbirth and throw Ian Riese-Moraine away! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 20 March 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Almost all of them

Dadrock Holmes (Dada), Sunday, 20 March 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

All of them apart from Everything Counts by Depeche Mode and all the Soft Cell singles.
