Wham!: I'm Your Man
Yazoo: Situation

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

skindeep - stranglers

fascination - human league

safety dance - men without hats

vienna calling - falco

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Never Say Never" - Romeo Void
"Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go" - Soft Cell

Sara Sherr, Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cure - "Lovesong"
New Order - "The Perfect Kiss"

and I def. second that Soft Cell one.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Yazoo "Situation" (the 7" only lasts about 2 minutes!) but I wouldn't say the same about "Don't Go" (which gets annoying very quickly)

I'd say China in Your Hand by T'Pau- the 7" inch sounds like it was recorded in someone's garage with a tape recorder- the 12" is such an improvement with a better sax solo at the end too

JTS, Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't agree with the Soft Cell one. I don't think "Where Did Our Love Go" quite works out in the minimalist version by Soft Cell.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

was "no bulbs" an 80's hit? it shoulda been!

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"I don't think "Where Did Our Love Go" quite works out in the minimalist version by Soft Cell."

it does geir, trust me.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I strongly disagree about "Lovesong" -- "Fascination Street", on the other hand ...

Cabaret Voltaire -- Sensoria (this may not count, because I'm not 100% certain that there even was a 7" version)

also, When In Rome -- The Promise

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I prefer the 12" version of "Digging Your Scene" and "It Doesn't Have To Be" by The Blow Monkeys.

Also, a lot of Italo Disco worked better in 12" versions. "Visitors" by K.O.T.O, for instance, was clearly better in its extended mix.

Yes, and, "Two Tribes", obviously...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been a while since I've heard the long version of Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go but I like the whole breakdown between the two songs.

Sara Sherr, Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

as soon as i saw this thread .. my mond shouted out Sensoria 12" Cabs.

as ever some one else beat me to it.

totally amazing record.

far better than the album version.

and still sounds stunning in 2005. as proven last week after setting up my new system .. this being one of the 1st record i plaed.

others : dont get mad get even - age of chance, and probably one of the best 12" of the 80's - Dr Mabuse - Propaganda.

mark e (mark e), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Donna Summer 'Dinner With Gershwin'

Nu-Shooz 'Point Of No Return'

Sven Bastard (blueski), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Duran Duran - "Hold Back the Rain"

Quit glaring at Ian Riese-Moraine! He's mentally fraught! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 19 March 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark.

That Arthur Baker "blaster mix" is incredible. Anyone out there have his version of "Cover Me"?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

undercover of the night - rolling stones

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

also, When In Rome -- The Promise

woah, do you have this? Didn't know it existed.

Actually, I shouldn't say that the 12" "Lovesong" is better, but I think it could be as good, in a different way.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the "Ollie North" mix of "The Promise" ... this is the mix I used to hear on the radio at the time, and it might also be the one you have in mind. There were several other dance mixes too.

I'm not sure I've ever heard the 7" edit.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the one I have and know is 3:36. You?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The Killing Moon, Echo and the Bunnymen. 12" version aka All Night Version is a few minues longer and absolutely spectacular.

Lee F# (fsharp), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Pet Shop Boys - "Left to My Own Devices"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the one I have and know is 3:36. You?

6:25. It sounds as though yours is the version that actually charted on Billboard (and is mostly beatless?)

How about a gmail exchange?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, sounds like that would be mutually beneficial. What's yours?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 20 March 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The Organon Mix of Kate Bush's Cloudbusting

mentalist (mentalist), Sunday, 20 March 2005 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. Bill -- the file has been sent.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 20 March 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

what's your g-mail address?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 20 March 2005 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

never mind, I'm an idiot.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 20 March 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Altered Images - I Could Be Happy

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

English Beat - "Save It For Later"

Burr (Burr), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark.
That Arthur Baker "blaster mix" is incredible. Anyone out there have his version of "Cover Me"?

i don't have it but i've heard it and it is equally incredible.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 20 March 2005 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Erotic City"
"Borderline"

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The third Arthur Baker Springsteen -- the "Freedom Mix" of "Born in the U.S.A." -- is also aces. He uncovers Bruce repeatedly moaning "Oh my God, no" near the end.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't the original 12" version of Yazoo's "Situation" (i.e. the one on the B-side of "Only You") simply the 7" version repeated twice, with a short gap in the middle?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Sunday, 20 March 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It was only an independent hit, but Cocteau Twins - "Peppermint Pig"

Let's keep the afterbirth and throw Ian Riese-Moraine away! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 20 March 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Although I'm sure someone might debate otherwise that the 7" is superior...but I like CT in a dance direction.

Let's keep the afterbirth and throw Ian Riese-Moraine away! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 20 March 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Boys Don't Cry - "I Wanna Be a Cowboy"

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 20 March 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The question really should be about what pre-house records (1986-7) were good 12" because once house music kicked in there were heaps of great 12"s. Prior to 87 the very best 12" were late 70s early 80s disco (donna summer, sylvester, divine etc - patrick cowley & bobby o productions epecially). Hense the Pet Shop Boy's infatuation with hi-energy.

Hip hop was played on 12" but the album versions were often the same; go-go was very 12" orientated though (and the mixes were longer). Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel with Troublefunk on 'Pump me up' was a great early 80s 12". Reggae is of course entirely on 12" throughout this period

pop 12" were often terrible (david bowie's 'let's dance' springs to mind). I agree about 'Situation' - totally essential as is 'sensoria' but I reckon the Human League / League Unlimited probably did the best 12" of the early 80s. To my ears ztt's 12"s (frankie, art of noise etc) sound terrible now but they probably did more at the time than anyone else to prepare mainstream ears for house music...

I have a real soft spot for the pre-house period (when jam & lewis ruled the 12"). All the following are mindblowing in their full 12" versions:

Janet Jackson - When I think of you
Gwen Guthrie - Ain't nothin going on but the rent
Mantronix - Bassline/ needle to the groove
Divine - Native Love
Madonna - Open your heart
Pet Shop Boys - Opportunities
Mel & Kim - showing out (mortgage mix)
Tavares - Heaven must be missing an angel (liebrand remix)
Hamilton Bohannon - Lets start II dance again
Troublefunk - troublefunk express
a zillion yello records

Guy Beckett, Sunday, 20 March 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Altered Images - I Could Be Happy

*sigh*. kraftwerk, new order and the human league in one exquisite introduction.

my picks: human league: "sound of the crowd", soft cell: "say hello, wave goodbye" and - yes! - pete wylie: "sinful".

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

that was a sigh of pleasure, btw.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

'I could be happy' has dated badly I think - like loads of early 80s 12"s it feels very extended - they were often called the extended mix which seemed to establish an approach...

Guy Beckett, Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Depeche Mode: "People Are People" and "Master & Servant"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

More Arthur Baker…
IOU – Freez

wtin, Monday, 21 March 2005 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Lipps Inc - 'Funkytown'
Duran Duran - 'Girls On Film'
Prince - 'U Got The Look', 'Mountains', 'Let's Go Crazy'

BARMS, Monday, 21 March 2005 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

'I Wonder If I Take You Home'

BARMS, Monday, 21 March 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I disagree completely with "I Could Be Happy"!! I have the 7" and the 12", the 12" version is way too long as someone else said above, just repeating bars for no reason. It sucks! I keep meaning to get rid of it.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 21 March 2005 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Depeche Mode: "People Are People" and "Master & Servant"

Don't forget "Everything Counts".

ledge (ledge), Monday, 21 March 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

New Order rules this thread, especially with they Low-Life singles.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 March 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"I disagree completely with "I Could Be Happy"!! I have the 7" and the 12", the 12" version is way too long as someone else said above, just repeating bars for no reason. It sucks! I keep meaning to get rid of it."

i couldn't possibly disagree more. the 12-inch version is the only way to listen to it.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 21 March 2005 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Human League - the "Hard Times/Love Action" 12-inch (note: this is criminally NOT the version which appears on that new 12" 80s compilation).

Specials - "Ghost Town" for Rico's trombone solo and the drums shutting on him like a coffin lid.

Spandau Ballet - "Glow" and "Chant No 1."

Coati Mundi - "Que Pasa/Me No Pop I" ("I give you evrrrrything you need/Money, a home, insurance policies")

And that's just 1981!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 21 March 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, talking of that 12"/80s thing and spandau ballet: i was pleasantly surprised by the extended version of "to cut a long story short", which goes all snarly and metal-beaty.

i'm very unconvinced by the so-called 12" of "i'm in love with a german film star", though. for a start, it's three and a half minutes long. there can't be a shorter/different version, surely?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 March 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't ever recall there being a 12" of "German Film Star," though I do remember a 12" of the follow-up "Skin Deep" (great record, should have been a hit).

Also from '81:
Depeche Mode: "Just Can't Get Enough" - genius.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 21 March 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

**New Order rules this thread, especially with they Low-Life singles**

"The Perfect Kiss" is 12 inches of genius...[insert dick joke here]

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Monday, 21 March 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Look who you're quoting!

BARMS, Monday, 21 March 2005 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish new order had done a 7" of blue monday.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 March 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Frazier Chrous - Sloppy Heart (the long 12" version on 4ad as opposed to the short album edit later put out by Virgin). it's just so much better in every respect

also I'll second When In Rome - A Promise . the original 12" i have has 2 extended mixes and then 2 dubs, and all 4 are like a billion times better than the 7" edit

Lastly, The Wolfgang Press - Kansas.
The full 12" version is unfuckingbelievably massive.

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 21 March 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost
That's funny cause I was gonna add how great "Blue Monday" was until I realized it probably wasn't released as a 7 inch.

Sorry if that dumb joke was some kind of faux pas. No dis intended, I was just pleased that we agreed on something.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Monday, 21 March 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yes - owner of a lonely heart
cyndi lauper - girls just wanna have fun

xhuxk, Monday, 21 March 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Baby It's True - Mari Wilson.
Faithless - Scritti Politti.
River - King Trigger. (Starts with a dub section.)
Blind Vision - Blancmange.
Lies - Thompson Twins.
"Chant No.1" seconded...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 21 March 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Soft Cell's "Torch", dammit! Also, "Ghost Town" fully seconded.

OleM (OleM), Monday, 21 March 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the 12" the only version of "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" that has the air raid sirens and corny laser guns?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 21 March 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Reid- One Way Out (late 80s R+B) although I doubt anyone will have ever heard of it.....

Was "It's Over" by the Funk Masters ever released as a 7"?

JTS, Monday, 21 March 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Bangles - "Hazy Shade Of Winter", solely because of the demented bongo break.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 March 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I second that Stranglers "Skin Deep". Good call.

musicjohn73 (musicjohn73), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember Reid- they were like the poor man's Ten City.

Janice Irving, Monday, 21 March 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

New Order did do a 7" of "Blue Monday" in '88 but unfortunately it was an edit of the '88 "Quincy Jones" remix.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i couldn't possibly disagree more. the 12-inch version is the only way to listen to it.

I don't mind either version. I can listen to both easily.

Ian Riese-Moraine. Sweeter than a lorry load of white Toblerones. (Eastern Mantr, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Marc Almond / Bronski Beat : "Love to love you / I feel love"

phil jones (interstar), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been enjoying "Money's too tight to mention" regularly this week.

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Is 12"/80 really good?

wondering, Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

BARMS touched on it... but Prince owns this thread completely.

Hence the parallel project thread.

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

To my ears ztt's 12"s (frankie, art of noise etc) sound terrible now but they probably did more at the time than anyone else to prepare mainstream ears for house music...

A pox on your ears, Guy...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 2 April 2005 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Westworld, 'Sonic Boom Boy'

the westfox, Sunday, 3 April 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Is 12"/80 really good?

if you mean "is it actually ok despite the obvious risks of such a project?" then the answer's yes.

if you mean "yes, but is it really, really, really GOOD?" then, umm, no.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 3 April 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

12"/80 is ok and if the record label makes a volume 2 using this discussion for the tracklist it will be exceptional

meunderatable, Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

every A Certain Ratio 12", plus a lot of joints from Eric B. & Rakim

chris andrews (fraew), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

And no-one's mentioned "The story of the Blues" Wah! ?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 4 April 2005 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Talkin' Blues is on the b-side of the 7" though, you just don't get the vamping time-filler that joins them on the 12"

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 4 April 2005 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

There's at least one extra verse on the part 1 on the 12"...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 4 April 2005 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Matthew - it's a topic for another thread but Trevor Horn is to the 12" what Andrew LLoyd Webber was to the musical - over-blown, pompous, sexless, long-winded and witless. These blatant defincies were well camouflaged because Morley's packaging and hype was first rate. But compared with British peers Martin Rushent, Martin Hannett, Mike Thorne, Stephen Hague, Flood, Daniel Miller, PWL, even Ian Levine... Horn always seemed like he'd put in even fewer hours behind decks seeing what moved a dancefloor. And very few of the Brits come anywhere near their US counterparts. The Gershwins of this decade are all stateside (Arthur Baker, Patrick Cowley, Bobby Orlando, Jam & Lewis, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson) simply because club culture got bigger sooner.

Guy Beckett, Monday, 4 April 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
The worst 12-inch ever in my opinion is "Money" by the Flying Lizards. It continues on from where the 7" version left off with a bunch of useless noise and I can't imagine how anyone could have danced to it. I'm glad to see there are more cd's coming out with some of these 12 inch mixes. I wish there were more.

zombiedj, Tuesday, 23 May 2006 05:05 (twenty years ago)

THAT 12" IS GREAT!!!

THAT B-SIDE IS WONDERFUL!!!

And you get the 12" version of "Summertime Blues" on the b-side.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 06:30 (twenty years ago)

my favorite 12" is MY COCK

hackety hack don't cum back (latebloomer), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 06:42 (twenty years ago)

the three inch remix?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 06:44 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...

insecure me - soft cell.

the 7" (well the 7" b side, it was a flip not a lead track) is just a shortened version of the 12, just stars to fade when it gets good.
