so is Roxy Music really recording a new studio album?

roxyrama.com says so, as well as that they're playing at Isle of Wight festival:

http://www.roxyrama.com/news/interactive_news-frameset.html

They say to watch for details on manzanera.com, but they also say that manzanera.com took their announcement of the new album off the site, and now it only mentions the festival.

wetmink (wetmink), Sunday, 20 March 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. Avalon was such a perfect studio coda that I'd be suspicious.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 March 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

one thing that annoys me (no idea if the above link does this) is when stories about the roxy music tour a few years back or this reunion thing feel the need to mention 'brian eno will not be participating', sometimes they throw in a 'notably' before it.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

True. Well, if they record an album, I wouldn't be surprised if he contributed to one or two tracks like he did on Ferry's last album. (But then the stories might be even worse: "Notably, Brian Eno will not be touring with the group or wearing a grotesque glam drag costume.")

wetmink (wetmink), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

After Ferry's very good Frantic a few years ago and the tour, I sincerely believe Roxy is one of the few reunions that could produce something worthwhile. I hope it happens.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 20 March 2005 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Frantic is good, was relistening to it the other day. Still, I'd rather hear more solo Ferry as such.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 March 2005 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not both?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 20 March 2005 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to reunion show a few years back at that Theater at MSG and it was excellent. In addition to the main three guys, we got original drummer Paul Thompson back in the fold, cute lady ringers for Eno's treatments and Eddie Jobson's (?) violin, (actually I can't remember if this was two people or one doing double duty), this excellent guy called Zev Katz on bass and, the icing on the cake, Chris Spedding on guitar.

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 20 March 2005 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

placing'notable' in front of one member's name is an oblique strategy

dave q (listerine), Sunday, 20 March 2005 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

That's Cute and oblique.

I saw them on that reunion tour and was amazed at how great it was! I missed seeing them before the break up and then listened to them a lot about 5 years later.

Amy Meacham, Sunday, 20 March 2005 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Very oblique. So oblique I don't get it. I don't even see the word "notable" on this list: "News : Novas : Notizie : Nouvelles : Nachrichten : Noticias : Novosti : Notíciass"

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 20 March 2005 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, Eno had this set of cards in the '70s called Oblique Strategies. They were filled with Saddam loyalists.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 20 March 2005 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The Roxy reunion was cool and all, but I agree with Ned: solo Ferry is much more interesting these days (I loved "Frantic"). I rather like the humility (and novelty) of releasing albums which mix originals with so many covers. Since Ferry's stylistic powers are more consistent these days than his songwriting, I'd rather hear four ace covers than four or five average Roxy compositions.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 20 March 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Rickey, you mean like the card on the cover of Here Comes The Warm Jets that gives away the meaning of the phrase?

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 20 March 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Roxy can do covers, too, you know...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 20 March 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Like "Jealous Guy."

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 20 March 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Which some people (inexplicably, in my opinion) love.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 20 March 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The import live Roxy album from the reunion tour is great. I got it from Zev, who played bass on the tour. He told me Ferry was a real hardass, James Brown-style, if anyone played a bad/wrong note during the shows!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 20 March 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You knew that guy Zev? He's great! He used to play with Ferry on some solo tours and also played with Roseanne Cash too, right? I remember during "Remake/Remodel" where each instrument takes a little solo break and on the record the bass plays the lick from "Day Tripper" but Zev played the lick from the James Bond Theme.

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 20 March 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Zev came in to do stuff at the studio where I worked. He's a nice fella and super bassist.

Brian Eno Rejoins Roxy Music;
Band to Record First LP in More Than 20 Years

Scott Plagenhoef reports:
Legendary UK art-rockers Roxy Music have reformed to record their first LP in more than 20 years-- and their first in more than 30 years with Brian Eno. Contact Music reports that the newly reformed Roxy Music will include the five members who appeared on both of the band's first two albums, 1972's Roxy Music and 1973's For Your Pleasure-- Eno, Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera, and Andy Thompson. After that sophomore release, Eno left the band to pursue a solo career.
This news comes just days after the confirmation of Roxy Music's appearance at the upcoming Isle of Wight Festival, where they'll appear alongside Morrissey and R.E.M. There is no word whether Eno-- who was notoriously critical of RM's reunion tour-- will perform at the Isle of Wight show, or whether the band will tour as a quintet. Speaking to Rolling Stone in February 2001, Eno said of the then-recent news that Ferry and co. were reforming to play live: "I'm not interested anymore. I mean, it's obvious why it's being done. Why does anyone have a reunion? They've suddenly been fired up with a whole bunch of incredible new ideas that have been lying dormant for the last 25 years? I just don't like the idea. It leaves a bad taste."

wetmink (wetmink), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking forward to this!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You'd think Scott woulda found the quotes (in Uncut, I think?) after the tour turned out to be fabulous where Eno retracted what he said.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

this is notable indeed!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm honestly astounded. Hmmm. We'll see! Expectations would be ridiculously high but I'm keeping the Eno collaborations with Ferry on the latter's later solo albums as being the role model here more than anything else.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Again, Eno is on record saying how good the tour turned out and that he was wrong to write it off. So, I'm less suprised, but equally encouraged.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

well they've changed that, and apparently Eno is not going to appear, and they seem to have toned down the news about the album as well.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

from enoweb:

Contrary to reports in The Times and on contactmusic.com on 21 March, Brian has not re-joined Roxy Music and isn't in the studio with them/appearing at the Isle of Wight Festival.

The Times reports that Brian is to finance the campaign of Reg Keys who will be standing for election in Tony Blair's Sedgefield constituency. Reg Keys' son Tom, a Royal Military Policeman, was killed by a mob in Iraq in 2003.

wetmink (wetmink), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I gotta give credit to Brian for that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What, for doing his bit to get a Tory government back in power?

(at least there's one thing he has in common with Ferry)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
So what was the verdict on this? Happening w/ or w/o Eno? Happening at all?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Sunday, 17 April 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

We need'em now more than ever!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
more from roxyrama.com:

Elsewhere, Bryan Ferry has given a indication that former Roxy member
Brian Eno might have a part to play in the forthcoming Roxy Music
album, currently in production.

Speaking at the Isle of Wight festival, Ferry is quoted as saying:

"I hope he's (Brian Eno's) going to come in and do some things on a few
tracks. No live work, but on the record I hope he'll come and do
something, yeah."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/news/20050613_roxy.shtml

Eno's involvement would mean the first complete reunion of Roxy Music's
core personnel since Eno's departure in 1973.

wowowowowowowowowow

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Yes — could be really, really good. "I Thought" on Frantic was fantastic.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Let's hope it rocks.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

i hope it's better than Eno's last one

rizzx (rizzx), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

i would like the eno album more if there wasn't so much hype around it. it really sounds tossed off.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 17 June 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

It gave me great sadness to pan the new Eno.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 17 June 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

bumping above the grime threads

wetmink (wetmink), Friday, 17 June 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

A new Roxy Music album? "Oh Yeah! (On The Radio)"

Here's hoping there's some fire (i.e. Manzanera and Mackay contributing) in a few of the songs.

Garfield Odie (garfield), Friday, 17 June 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I suspect it will sound like a crunchier "Frantic" - not bad, that, but underwhelming.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 17 June 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Um, Eno has been recording with these guys for many years, off and on. He (and most of the other Roxy folks) have played on the last two Ferry records (well, "Mamona" and "Frantic"), plus the last Manzanera album. As much as I love Eno, the fact that he may or may not be contributing to a reunion album does not indicate said reunion album will be any better or worse than the last several Ferry records.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Also, I was slightly put off by the last reunion tour, where the great Paul Thompson was rarely mentioned. Sort of like when Pink Floyd reunited and made Rick Wright's photo smaller in the booklet because he didn't pony up enough start up cash.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

I didn't really get that impression, other than the fact he was the last to sign on, so for a while it was Ferry/Manzanera/Mackay. And Ferry does refer to him as "the great Paul Thompson" (at least at the show I was at).

wetmink (wetmink), Friday, 17 June 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

It was the presence of Thompson - rather than some snoozy studio hack - that made me see the show. Which, by the way, was still too heavy on the snooze.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 17 June 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Um, Eno has been recording with these guys for many years, off and on
individually yes but not as Roxy Music which is categorically different

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 17 June 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...

true according to manzanera.com (for real this time)

http://www.manzanera.com/news2.htm#summer

Roxy recording. And summer touring

Phil, Bryan, Andy and Paul and various session musicians have been writing and recording over the last 6 months. This will continue till Xmas when, with a fair wind, there will be a new 'fab' album in place. Watch this space!

Touring is progressing well , the reviews have been great. We are enjoying it and all that interaction with the audiences will find its way into the recordings. Pictures coming soon.

So where is it?

Fishes, You Hit Me With A Flounder (Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt), Saturday, 13 June 2009 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

The Eno bio "On Some Faraway Beach" quotes Bryan Ferry from Jan. 2008: "I might work on it this year, I'm not sure yet." So there you go.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 13 June 2009 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

It's just as well, I suppose. The unmixed, leaked version I hear sometimes inside my head is awful.
