No internet connection required! No time waiting for endless downloads! No carpal tunnel syndrome! Just a short ride to the town dump and the handy and free dump store and pretty soon you are the envy of all your file-sharing pals! at least, if you live where i live. i don't know where the hell you are or what your situation is. and frankly, i'm not sure i want to know. anyway, here is what i picked up at the dump store today for free and on vinyl and all in great shape. some even in better than great shape. some even better than that!

minnie riperton - adventures in paradise (lovely, in case you have never heard it.)

angela bofill - angel of the night (reminds me of my dad. and 1979 in general. "I Try" almost made me cry tonight.)

motivation - motivation (hot disco-funk from 1983 on De-Lite)

the lords of the new church - killer lords (all the lords any sane person would ever need. and proof that everyone except the band themselves made them sound pretty shitty. okay, maybe todd rundgren made them sound okay, but steve van zandt made them sound like shit. RFI: do i need the post-dead boys pre-lords album that stiv made? thanks for your time. do i need any proletariat albums? do i need the second union carbide productions album? sorry. that's it.)

horald griffiths - good ol' boy (he was so stoned he couldn't spell harold! this is cornpone folk on atlantic circa 1972 with two really good dreamy folkpsych numbers that make it worth owning. he also has a song called "love buzz".)

johnny cougar - the lonesome jubilee (it's no scarecrow, but "paper in fire" always sounds good.)

ritchie francis - song bird (VERY heavily orchestrated hippie-pop. lotsa brass and strings and piano and epic 7 minute songs about hippie feelings. great production and tricky arrangements. almost prog-pop. 1971 on paramount. post gulf&western shakedown. dot records was never the same after that, you know.)

jesse colin young - the soul of a city boy (mid-60's debut. sounds fab. i was never really a fan either group or solo, but this is nice quiet strumming/humming stuff.)

elmer bernstein - return of the seven (i heart warren oates. larry cohen wrote the screenplay, you know. i heart larry cohen. i know you are all phonebooth haters. i don't care. the man is a genius.)

george feyer - echoes of paris, vienna & italy (george shocked the classical world when he went pop and started to play his swanky piano in all the right monte carlo hot-spots. 60-song boxed set with my bubbly name on it.)

stuff - more stuff (they thank chevy chase on the back. van mcCoy produced it. it's smooth and funky. there you have it.)

stuff - stuff it! (and oh yeah. it's cornell dupree's band. and steve cropper produced this one. there you have it again.)

pentangle - cruel sister (yummy stuff if you like this kinda stuff. i like this kinda stuff. it's like a brand new friggin' copy. at the dump!)

loretta lynn & conway twitty - lead me on (even if you never listen to this album you could just frame the cover and put it on your mantle. but you should really play it too.)

mimi & richard farina - celebrations for a grey day (um, i own 2 double-album best-ofs with this album on it and i own this album already, which would make this the 4th copy in one form or another that i own. which is silly really. but this is mono. maybe i don't have a mono copy!)

weather report - weather report (i've never heard this record! not even once. i don't think. i will listen.)

victor feldman - your smile (i've never heard this either. it's from 1974 on choice records. with tom scott. i'm kinda hoping it has some phat breakbeats on it. not that i have any practical use for any phat breakbeats, but i enjoy them as much as the next guy.)

Scott, is Martha's Vineyard this weird fairy world where albums just wash up on the beach, having been speared by grizzled men with one leg?

minnie riperton - adventures in paradise (lovely, in case you have never heard it.)

oh man, "Inside My Love" is such a sweet tune!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The tons of old radio promos and shit I've dropped off at goodwill are nowhere of this quality, but I'm hoping I've made some nerd's day all the same

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Lead Me On is one of my favorite country albums. The title track is almost unbearably sexy. "If you want me, I'll come with you, but you have to lead me on." I vaguely remember Conway & Loretta doing sausage commercials on regional TV in the 70s. "Hey Conway... Hey Loretta."

the early Weather Reports are better than later, almost Eno-ish.

Larry Cohen is a GENIUS.

"RFI: do i need the post-dead boys pre-lords album that stiv made? thanks for your time."

Is this his mod rekkerd with Rickenbacher guitars and stuff?!?! (Haven't heard it.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I know some people who go apeshit for his solo stuff, haven't heard it myself

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Disconnected, reissued last year on Bomp. It's good! I think I've got an AMG review of it somewhere...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I take it back, Greg Prato did that one! Both CD issues are nice politer power-pop between the mania. He covered "It's Cold Outside" and stuff like that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott, you don't like the Youngbloods? I would've figured you for a fan.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 20 March 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

should i get the last riperton album, with memory lane on it?

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 20 March 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT IS A DUMP STORE? TEH DUMP'S ANNEX WHERE THEY ROOT THROUGH THE TRASH AND SELL YOU STUFF?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i knew this was a scott thread!

we've talked about the farina rec. elsewhere, right? coz yeah that one deserves to be gotten and passed around everywhere.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

no, it's just a shack where people leave their excess crap that might still be useable to someone. like a thrift store, kinda, but everything is free.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS is what i got at the thrift store this week. half price on tuesday, so less than ten bucks for everything (most of the euro-singles are crap though. i just can't resist goofy picture sleeves):

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i know i am a vinyl nut, but a first pressing of porgy and bess...words fail me. it sounds amazing.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, Scott, did you know that Carlos Montoya's son lives on the island? He runs a nursery/landscaping business offering native plants (mostly grasses). His daughter teaches flamenco dance here.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I nabbed two Nintendos and a full set of D&D books at Cape Cod dumps a couple summers ago. Guess New England isn't interested in saving the universe, listening to Pentangle, or treasure.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty damn cool, wish there was one near me. Good work finding that Lords! It's good. Last year I dumpster dived 300 records at a record store. Half were crap 12" 80's singles like madonna, rest were 70's & 80's rock albums. Ebayed a lot of 150 singles, sold a few dozen albums, made $90 or so. I kept the Bronski Beat and Soft Cell. Still have 100 to get rid of.
