How is it that I had never even heard of this until today? Anyway, I've been researching it, and the concensus seems to be: potentially great songs hindered by crappy recording and non-existent re-mastering. True?

Also, does anyone know if the 2004 Italian import "boasts" better sound quality? Or is there some other superior version?

Oh. Apparently, some label called "Get Back" is releasing volumes one and two of the Bataclan performance. I wonder if they're re-mastered...

"Get Back" is a very very well-known reissue label, though I know them mostly for their vinyl reissues of much of the ESP disc catalog. They will probably sound decent, but I haven't heard the original so I can't be much help.

I haven't heard this in about a year, since before the album saw its official release (I'm not sure what the sound quality is like on the official version, but it's not so easy to polish a turd).

Simply put, fans of the artists will enjoy the album, and non-fans won't. It's certainly not essential. I find the No One Is There/Frozen Warnings/Janitor of Lunacy section a bit boring, but I have trouble getting into Nico's solo stuff.

I actually just got around to this only last summer. I don't know anything about different versions. I thought it was pretty good. Better than the one with Eno & Kevin Ayers anyway. The John Cale really impressed me and I've never been particularly drawn to him before.

I got the seven-inch double-EP version, back in the late 80s, when I was colleI was at a peak of enthusiasm for collecting all three artists, but still found this disappointng. Not so much the sound quality, but the performances: really slow and depressed, ditto the comments between songs.(Nico apologized for her voice:"I'm so-ree. I don't smoke cigarettes.")I mainly remember her and Lou; Cale might've been okay. I suppose it might be worth downloading (for free), but there's better stuff to be found (think that's the last time they all three got together, though).

are there any other live albums or any recordings that sound like the Lou songs here? the stripped down arrangements are just incredible

not really, though there's a bootleg circa 1970 of him playing a bunch of songs solo acoustic. Perfect Night from the late 90s is a live album that is kinda like his version of "unplugged" but it's not all that great. it's ok.
