i saw this about an hour ago. it is a parade of white pumps and off the shoulder sweaters

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Always found Club MTV pointless. I mean, showing a bunch of people dancing at a disco rather than videos, what was the point?

Even though I wasn't much into dance at the time, I had kind of a soft spot for "Partyzone", which featured a lot of interesting computer animation videos, but "Club MTV"? I never saw the point!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahhaha the Head.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

For a short while, MTV had a show (at least here in Europe) called "MTV Post Modern" which I really liked. It featured music that was sort of a cross-inbetween the stuff in "Alternative Nation"/"120 Minutes" and the more mainstream stuff, that is somewhat left of the mainstream but still more catchy and hit-oriented than the often underproduced and extremely leftfield stuff that would be played on the alternative programs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

charleston charge (chaki), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, those great pointless half-mintue MTV promos they used to have. Like Migraine Boy, and that poorly animated girl whose name escapes me at the moment that always used to make semi-comical observations.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, MTV was better back when MTV did actually play music videos

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

omg wtf is this hi nrg U2 cover??

charleston charge (chaki), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

MTV Rockumentary / Rockumentary Remix - Bah. Gimme "Behind the Music.
Alternative Nation - Who needs it when you had "120 Minutes"?
AMP - Don't remember this.
120 Minutes - Agreed. Bring it back.
Pop-Up Video - Why on earth did they ever stop this to begin with?
Superock! - Feeble shit replacement to "Headbanger's Ball". Not worth mentioning. And the host should die.
MTV Artist Cut - Don't remember this.
Singled Out - Absolutely dreadful. The exact moment when MTV started to suck.
Remote Control (just because I've never seen it, looks cool) It wasn't.
Idiot Savants - Don't remember this.
The Head (I think it was called) SOOO fuckin' bad. I much preferred "The Maxx".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think, maybe best of all was back then MTV didn't have shows at all, just playing music videos 24/7.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

chaki it was like the last c&c music factory hit, big right before achtung baby hit.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

This was the Paula Abdul song I thought was really cool back in the day, "Vibeology".

AMP was an "electronica" mix show, yes?

Alternative Nation - Who needs it when you had "120 Minutes"?
120 Minutes - Agreed. Bring it back

WHAT the FUCK?? I had always assumed that the two shows were exactly the same, and that Alternative Nation changed its name to 120 Minutes back in '91 or something. They really were two different shows???

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Amp was the best show MTV's ever had. The videos they played were SO DAMN COOL.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

this naughty by nature single isnt bad

charleston charge (chaki), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

120 minutes was the sunday show, alternative nation was basically what they renamed postmodern mtv (god these names!!), the half hour (?) edition of 120 minutes that ran on weekdays.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

hosted by nu-republican amerikka spokeswoman kennedy

charleston charge (chaki), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah Alternative Nation was hosted by Kennedy and had slightly less variety of videos.

120 Minutes was Dave Kendell, Lewis Largent and then Matt Pinfield in that order, played all the same videos as Alternative Nation did and a bunch that AN didn't. The best episodes were the ones with guest hosts - Henry Rollins, Thurston Moore, Evan Dando, etc.

The modern MTV2 Subterranean is kinda painful to watch. I hate 95% of the videos they show.

I wanna get this NbN CD again, i love this song.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i think they had dave kendall or maybe kevin seal host postmodern mtv.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

is john norris STILL at mtv? anyone know?

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

YES. He is the metrosexual Kurt Loder.

the bob mould/lou barlow episode changed my life

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yes JOHN NORRIS IS STILL THERE! Kevin Seal was on 120 Mins before Kendall btw and he is the best vj there ever was.

A PROMOTIONAL FEE HAS BEEN PAID BY BRITISH KNIGHTS AND JOSE EBER REPLENISHNG SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER

MTV made GREAT documentaries. So much better than VH1 when it came to that.

Alternative Nation was different from 120 Minutes--120 Minutes was on the indie side of the indie/alternative divide, and if a video got popular enough, it would eventually graduate to Alternative Nation. Also, they played more old videos than 120Min.

AMP was their big beat show, basically. I never watched an episode all the way through because it was too unfamiliar to me at the time, but if they still had it around I'd watch it religiously.

Maybe, but Headbanger's Ball was before my time.

MTV Artist Cut brought the artists in to talk about their videos while they were playing. It debuted the same day as TRL. One of the shows became the most popular music video show in history, the other didn't last a year. Try to guess which one is which!

While I agree that Singled Out was the beginning of the end for MTV, it was fun enough at the time.

I don't remember much about Idiot Savants. It was some sort of quiz show that brought in people who knew a lot about one subject but not much else. I imagine it's sort of like what became Beat the Geeks.

The Head fuckin' blew my mind back in the time. It probably hasn't dated very well.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Thurston Moore/Beck/Mike D episode of 120 Min was the greatest thing ever. I have it on VHS in storage, I hope it doesn't disintegrate before I can convert it to mpeg.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Why John Norris is the only old skool VJ still left on MTV is totally, utterly beyond me. What a fucking bore. Bring back Serena Altschul.

Oooh, oooh! And Ian Robinson, please!!

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

WHERE ARE THE SEX IN THE AUGHTIES???

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

That TM/Beck/Mike D episode was 2/20/94. I know this because they go HAPPY BIRTHDAY KURT COBAIN! at the end. Creepy.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

There's an extremely homoerotic Diana Ross video playing right now!

Why are Alternative Nation and 120 Minutes so good and Subterranean so bad?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Because indie is dead.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The posts alone are giving me flashbacks. My my.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

120 Minutes was Dave Kendell, Lewis Largent and then Matt Pinfield in that order,

You silly young'un. Adam Curry and Martha Quinn also took turns hosting it.,....prior to Kevin Seal.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

From the time i started watching it I should have said, I knew about those two but I never saw them.
The first episode I ever saw (which I still have on tape) was Kendell interviewing Evan Dando for It's A Shame About Ray.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are Alternative Nation and 120 Minutes so good and Subterranean so bad?

10 reasons besides "alternative music was better back then":

1. As much as I hate Kennedy and Matt Pinfield, they're both infinitely preferable to Jim fucking Shearer.

2. 2 hrs as opposed to one

3. Played old videos

4. Had interesting guests with interesting conversation and played interesting old videos by those interesting guests

5. Had those cool little "on this day in 1992" 120 Minutes factoids/flashbacks

6. Premiered new videos

7. Didn't take place in a dank alleyway

8. Played more than two videos in an average set

9. Had a cooler title sequence

10. Alternative music was better back then (oh well, I came close)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, when I first started watching 120 Minutes, it was being hosted by this guy:

http://images.usatoday.com/news/_photos/2004/03/19/jj-jackson-inside.jpg

J.J. Jackson. I think he actually did a better job than any of those guys that followed. He came across as pretty straightforward and intelligent.

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The Thurston Moore/Beck/Mike D episode of 120 Min was the greatest thing ever.

Nine long years I've been waiting to see this episode in full. As I noted on some other thread, I have a 15 second clip of this from the 10-year anniversary special in 1996, and it blew me away.

I always hated Pop-Up Video.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does everybody love that stupid episode so much? Beck acts like a fucking retard all through it.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Club MTV made me want to be a cameraman when I grew up.

i've got a tape somewhere of anthony kedis and flea guest hosting 120 mins from early 92 or so (they debuted some video from bloodsugarsexmagic). they naturally ran around acting like fools. but for one of their segments they calmly said a few words about the genius of miles davis and for the remaining 3 minutes sat and listened to a cassette of "kind of blue" (i think) in silence and nodded along. which was the coolest thing those two clowns did, maybe ever, and it was pretty strange. i don't know where that could happen on TV at the moment.

i guess i saw the "da funk" video the first time on Amp. was blown away. also "setting sun." was blown away. '97-ish. electronica is gonna take over! but Amp also had these cheesy digital swirly graphics "videos" they'd play, like the kind you can get some nintendos or whatever to do when you play a CD in them.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved the cheesy digital swirly graphics videos! They were trippy as fuck!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Club MTV made me want to be a cameraman when I grew up."

by this i mean it must've been a sweet gig looking up chicks' skirts all show! duh.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does everybody love that stupid episode so much? Beck acts like a fucking retard all through it.

That "jam session" part doesn't look stupid at all. But then again, I've only seen 15 seconds of it.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Thurston: "So, is Beck your real name? Were you christened Beck?"
Beck: *takes off shoe and throws it against backdrop*
Thurston: "All right."

That alone was better than anything else on TV ever.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Thurston: "What was the first album you ever bought?"
Beck: "The Xanadu soundtrack."

I mean, come on!

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

MY GENERATION SUCKS SO BAD I NEVER GOT TO SEE THE COOL STUFF BEFORE IT DISAPPEARED I WANT TO CRY CRY CRY!

latebloomer: damn cheapskate satanists (latebloomer), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

the most vivid memory i have of late night MTV as a young(er) whippersnapper is watching Kennedy interview Marilyn Manson on 120 minutes about being a "high priest in the church of satan".

she asked him what his opinion on Jewel was (because a Jewel video was coming up).

his answer: "...i...dont know"

latebloomer: damn cheapskate satanists (latebloomer), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"..Kennedy interview Marilyn Manson on 120 minutes"

GAH! alternative nation i mean, not 120 minutes.
