Critics should bring back the "next Beethoven" epithet.

People seem to prefer to use Mozart as the paridigm of great composers for this kind of comparison. I've recently seen Macca and Prince referred to as Mozart-like by critics. Partly I think because Beethoven is associated with certain stylistic and philosophic qualities that are very much of his time while Mozart is mainly seen in terms of an amazing facility.

Beethoven = more bombastic then....

I totally remember people posting to the IDM email list that "if Beethoven was alive today he'd be making IDM dood" etc. etc. Ummm, no.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 21 March 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody. The last next Beethoven was probably Shostakovich.

Another ILM-Thermo mind meld! After witnessing a 3 Inches OF Blood video over the weekend I initiated this very conversation with a friend of mine. Although we did mention Aphex Twin the conversation didn't go far beyond mocking the video.
