Finally got the Abruptum album after a few weeks of looking - Casus Lucifari.
Bought it off the strength of the write up and samples on Aquarius records, and although it sounded good from that, I was prepared to hate it, as I'm not a fan of metal - death, doom or otherwise.
Fortunately I love it, I think it sounds incredible - I can see the comparisons to William Baskinski, Fennez and Tim Hecker.
I know there's lots of other threads about metal knocking around, particularly the one about the recent Wire article, but my question is more specific than that.
If I like this particular album what other death/doom/metal will I like?
Thanks

seven months pass...
Well, if you like Abruptum, I can say you won't probably like most of black / death metal bands.
In fact, you may like bands who sound more progressive (if you like progressive-rock). You know, Abruptum is quite an exception... so in that experimental mood i suggest you : Neptune Tower (more transcendantal), Cryptopsy (really brutal, but mixing a lot of musical styles including jazz, prog and classical), Arcturus (black-prog-classical inspired), Ulver (a lot of styles are involved, espacialy what they did afer year 2000), Karlheinz Stockhausen (not metal, but a really important figure in contemporary music).
But to stay into the death / black metal style, you should look towards Thou Shalt Suffer, Enslaved (from the 'Monumension' album), Sacramentum (last song on 'The Coming of Chaos'), Marduk (the guitarist is part of Abruptum), Hate Eternal (brutal death metal with a particular aproach), Morbid Angel (a lot of styles involved, including noise and traditional).
On the other side, you can find bands that are not metal which make that kind of music : Einsterzünde Naubaten, Merzbow, Sonic Youth ... and i'm not including the XXe century composers... i think you should look at www.allmusic.com and see what they say about Abruptum and look further, following the links...
That's it, I hope it helped you to find new things.
