song allusions you didn't get till much later

(there's probably a thread already in existence, but i couldn't even begin to think how to search it)

talk about times when you found out what something meant/alluded to long after a song was already deeply ingrained in your consciousness

the impetus for this thread is as follows:

i went to the nude beach in miami this week (as usual), and when i got there a "naturlist" group was having a festival - and handing out a magazine of theirs to everyone as they went through the walkway to enter the beach. i decided to thumb through the magazine later on, and ran across an article talking about (what else?) nudity, specifically female genitalia and the oppression of its exposure through history. but as i'm reading this article, i run across a reference to an ancient irish stone carving that depicts a woman spreading her legs and exposing a widely spread vagina that was "meant to be menacing and frighten away potential attackers". it often was carved crudely on the walls of ancient castles and historically equated female genitals with power and danger....

it's name? the "Sheela-na-gig"

while this may be common knowledge to many of you, i was like "WHOAH!" when I was reading it, because all these years I've been a PJ Harvey fan and never really thought to investigate the strange and funny title any further...

Dave Eggers to thread

The Eggers article reminded me that I first read Geek Love/listened to Magazine and Can because of recommendations by Radiohead members. Craziness.

Also:

"Sympathy For The Devil"/Franz Ferdinand's "Love & Destroy" - The Master and Margarita
Le Tigre's "Hot Topic" - a million notable female artists/musicians/writers/activists, including the Slits
The Smiths' "Shakespeare's Sister" - Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie"
Sonic Youth's "Chapel Hill" - somewhat legendary murder of a liberal bookstore owner
Once I found a website that explained all the references in Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side"

On a less tasteful note, last night I learned exactly what Ludacris meant when he said he was going to "milk the cow" in "Yeah."

when I was a kid I thought the beginning of REM's "Feeling Gravity's Pull" went "it's a memory kind of sky" b/c I'd not heard of Man Ray yet... I still prefer my version.

also, was i the only one who didn't know what a sheela-na-gig was? now that i did a quick google, it seems to be not only vastly common knowledge, but there are entire sites devoted to tracking all of these in the UK.

I looked it up after hearing the song, if that counts.
