Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like the idea at all. Are they actually doing this? The Past Masters CDs are fine.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't really see the point as everybody already has the albums or compilations, so...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

past masters, yo

Silky Sensor (sexyDancer), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd put "how do you do what you do to me" or whatever it was called on please please me.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'd really like to hear the Beatles now, something from Revolver?"
"UK or US version?"
"Oh, whichever one has Taxman and Tomorrow Never Knows."
"Or how about this new version with bonus cuts, you always loved 'Rain' and 'Paperback Writer'"
"Weren't they on Beatles Yesterday and Today?"
"Well, yes originally but you see..."
"Forget it you're giving me a headache. Where's the TV Guide?"

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"That Means A Lot" would belong with the Help album since it was recorded during those sessions, FWIW.

darin (darin), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

rain and paperback writer were never on yesterday and today!

did anyone buy the capital box set with the stereo versions of the US albums? i want to but can't justify it to myself yet. the artwork is shitty, but apparently they sound amazing.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Really??? The "I Feel Fine"/"She's a Woman" cuts on Beatles '65 were the most ridiculous fake stereo attempt of all time. What, did they do new mastering of tracks in fake stereo? What is the point of this?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, to make $$$$$$$$.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't mind some of these being remixed/remastered. It would be great to actually hear the bass on "I'm Only Sleeping".

darin (darin), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't hear it anymore? You could certainly hear it on my old Yesterday and Today LP.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'm overstating things yes, but it would be nice to hear a better eq-ed version of Revolver (esp the "guitar" songs) with more separation a la Let It Be Naked.

darin (darin), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

There's too much bass on the Yellow Submarine remix/master

Silky Sensor (sexyDancer), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a dope. Paperback Writer/Rain were on the Hey Jude compilation. My point: is there unlimited interest in multiple re-re-reconfigured Beatles albums, and this thread says the answer is yes.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't the Hey Jude album also known at one point as The Beatles Again?

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed bonus tracks aren't a very good idea, but IF/THEN the original "One After 909" should be on Please Please Me.

Burr (Burr), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The mono version of "I Feel Fine" on Beatles 65 is the best version out there! Reverb rocks!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Was there a mono version of the album? Because the fake stereo on the stereo version of that is just ridiculous -- mud on one side and a tin can on the other.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Was there a mono version of the album?

Yep. My dad bought it back when it came out.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 21 March 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

geir, are you gainfully employed?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't the Hey Jude album also known at one point as The Beatles Again?

Yep! Thanks for reminding me: My old copy had the "Hey Jude" sleeve, but the record label called it "The Beatles Again."

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no point.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think if they are going to reissue these albums at any stage they could at least put the stereo and mono versions of almost every album on one CD, until the albums get too long to accommodate it, I guess. Supposedly the mono version of The White Album is the most radically different from the stereo version, but that would require a 4CD set. As for the US versions of songs... well, it just hurts me in the wallet to think about it all.

Deluxe (Damian), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The mono versions arent that different on the White album.

No more reissues of Beatle albums. No.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

On the contrary, proper remastering and decent packaging of the Beatles' albums are long overdue. Considering the artificially elevated prices Apple charge for the CDs, the current situation is a disgrace.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Precisely - full-price CDs, haven't been given a proper upgrade since they first came out in 1987, where plenty of other bands have had their albums remastered a few times over, with the bonus track treatment, and all at mid-price.

Deluxe (Damian), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

given that Geroge Martin claimed his greatest mistake was not including Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on Sgt Pepper.. er.. where are they?

debden, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

where's '0ne after 909' ? the '63 version i mean.

as an aside, the 20 minute 'think for yourself' vocal runthrough (all over soulseek, kazaa, et al, but originally on the unsurpassed/ultra rare bootlegs) says more about the band than any book ever.

oh yeah and the demo of 'here there and everywhere' while not strictly an extra traxk, would make a dead man cry.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

But who actually needs this?

A nice 'better' package / SACD sound, I can see the appeal.

But plenty of other bands have had their albums remastered a few times over, you make it sound like that was a good thing? (Who's a Bowie fan? How many Ziggy's ya got now?)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

number of ziggy's :

original sloppy cd issue ('87ish)
RYKO re-release with extra tracks ('90)
24 bit re-release with booklet (2000)
2 cd anniversarry release (2003)

piscesboy, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

ziggy total:

the original vinyl issue my dad reluctantly bought for me out of woolworths (hamilton branch) in 1972.

er, that's it.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I notice you can't get that "White Album" anymore, the one with the nice sleeves and apple art...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: the 20 minute Think For Yourself session excerpt...

Noticed a couple of weeks ago that Ian MacDonald in his bit about TFY in Revolution In The Head uses the word 'fervour' which made me smile. Would mean nothing unless you had heard the bootleg.

Woolworths in Hamilton...scene of some of my first records buying - Rescuers OST I think.

mms (mms), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The fans have spoken, and they want the 20 minute version of "Dig It" to close every Beatles album.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

This is wishful thinking I'm sure, but does anyone have a MP3 of this Think For Yourself bootleg, they could possibly send me?

darin (darin), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: The Think For Yourself outake. Lets not read too much into this - If I remember correctly George Martin was taping the Beatles in the studio for possible inclusion in a Christmas flexi. The Beatles knew it and are conciously 'wacky'and deliberatley not confrontational. Whether they had a little herbal help is debatable, but whatever the reason, this recording is hardly a fair indication of the Beatles in the studio or their relationships.

Personally, I prefer Lennon's stinging jibe at Harrison at the end of one of George's appalling attempts at a solo (I think its from a version of One After 909, but I'm prepared to be corrected):

"What was that? You call that a fucking guitar solo?"

It says more about the real Beatles relationship than 20 minutes of false camaraderie.

Darin - I'll try to get it together tomorrow, unless someone already has a copy ripped and ready?

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Jeff - if it's not too much trouble, that would be great!

darin (darin), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, of course. The sleeve art of the CDs is fine and true where it has to be to the originals. All the CDs come with a mono mix, so you pick what you wanna hear. The mono mixes sound great.

George Smith, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It says more about the real Beatles relationship than 20 minutes of false camaraderie.

The mood of the "Let It Be" sessions != the mood of your typical Beatles recording session.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Most Beatles albums haven't been remastered since 1987. Obviously, they would need a 24 bit treatment, like most remasters these days. And then, they should definitely include bonus material as well, and just skip "Past Masters"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

ziggy total:

the original vinyl issue my dad reluctantly bought for me out of woolworths (hamilton branch) in 1972.

er, that's it.

Same, from Bebop Records on George Street in the early 1990s.

Was that lovely picked-guitar version of "I'm looking Through You" put on those horribly-priced Anthologies? I have it from Ultra Rare Trax, and can't stop listening to it.

Acme 2, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"And then, they should definitely include bonus material as well, and just skip "Past Masters"

DON'T AGREE. CHEESEY.

hahahaha!!! *really*?? i'd never noticed that!
brilliant. aw, god bless mr. mcdonald , wherever he is.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, me too re: Think 4 yrself.

That "I'm looking through you" Is on the anthology series.

They picked the wrong version of "Yes it is" though, take 1 is more interesting...

CARNIVAL OF LIGHT, PEOPLE

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Barcelona!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Not saying endless rehauling of the back catalogue is a good thing, I'm more implying that if the Beatles are a big deal (and they are to me) then the albums should be repackaged fittingly.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)
