with my 21st birthday less than SIX MONTHS AWAYYYY (and because this is probably the last time i'll ever get really ridiculously excited about a birthday - seriously, this is usually when i start planning birthday functions), the time has come for me to plan plan plan what i'll be doing! besides the dinner and drinks and all that good stuff, i imagine there will be a time when my cordially invited party guests and i will be at someone's apartment listening to music, and since it's my birthday and i'll feel entitled to hijack the stereo, i was thinking that while i have a fascistic death grip on the musical selections, i'll do something neat with it, but i need some, er, researching help. ergo, ILM, help someone less chart-savvy than yourselves pick one really fantastic pop song from each year that i've been alive on this planet! the mix will, of course, be played chronologically. and choose carefully because your results could make my party the toast of the town! (or not. probably not.) (also if no one wants to bother (since it's possible this thread has been done already in some form), point me either in the direction of a really good website that archives pop charts and i can do my own math (or a thread i may have overlooked).)

(actually, it should be noted that i refuse to budge on 1984's single being anything OTHER than "let the music play" so you should pick from everything except that year. thanks!)

This will take some time, but this thread = my super sweet sixteen for the ILM set.

deej., Tuesday, 22 March 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, this could make me crazee for weeks trying to figure this out.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, to make this a bit easier: i wanna maybe limit this to stuff the average college-age kid might be familiar with (i'm thinking "west end girls" for 1985, "toxic" for 2004, "crazy in love" for 2003, etc.).

also, birthday's not until september so wrack away ;)

this thread = my super sweet sixteen for the ILM set

so does this mean i can get a ridiculous limousine and that my drunken mother will hit on my hot male friends? SWEET.

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

shit, 2002 is a fight between "freak like me" and "house of jealous lovers." hmmm.

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

oh cripes "let the music play" WAS '83, wasn't it? her album came out in 1984 though so i'm tempted to fudge my pop history somewhat just so i can play some gatdamn shannon at a party

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd go with "House of Jealous Lovers" because it was a much bigger hit than "Freak Like Me" and therefore more people at your birthday party will recognize it.
