Did people write 'never mind' as 'nevermind' before Nirvana?

Cos folks seem to do that everywhere now, and it's mildly annoying like 'alot' is mildly annoying. It isn't in any dictionary or spellchecker I have to hand, but I suspect it could be soon.

So, the real question might be: how often have solitary pop records eased new words/spellings into a dictionary? S/D? C/D?

In '94 I lived in a shitty, shitty apartment in NYC. Roaches everywhere, crack fiends in the hallway, a new corpse in my living room every night. A fucking nightmare. I talked to the building manager and was like, "Who owns this fucking dive, twat?" He said, "Super? Unknown." How I long for the days when that phrase was uttered in such a beautifully two-part manner.

gear that joke would be funnier if you realized that building managers and superintendents are the same thing. supers don't own buildings, landlords do.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

No offense, Nag, but one word that annoys me is the very first one you used! That's an English thing, right? Using "cos" as a lazy substitute for "because"? I've always used "'cause" myself; but now I realize that it requires twice as many keystrokes as "cos", so I guess that'll save you time, so carry on. Forget I said anything.

Cos is at least 18th Century. Language pedants wd. be amazed just how many "lazy" or "incorrect" spellings have a venerable history.
