they don't get mad love around here, though there aren't many hataz either.

Anyway the Special View comp is one of my favorite records ever and I listen to it all the time. Nearly every track is on par with the oft-cited "Another Girl, Another Planet"

so WHERE IS THE LOVE etc!?

Here is some love right here. And here is a command for you
Get one Peel Sessions!

I think you will find some more love when some of the Brits wake up. Stewart and Grout and a few others, I think.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 05:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Love here too!

They are wonderful and often drive me too some pretty absurd lengths to convince others of their greatness.

dan. (dan.), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I only recently developed teh love for that first LP after hearing only "AG,AP" since the beginning of time. Good innit.

What are these 'Even Serpents Shine' and 'Baby's Got A Gun' LPs like then?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

MMMmmm, yawn. whassup?

The only ones? well, I have the peel sessions LP, the book and a video.

I think they were possibly underrated by many people but were way overrated by many, Peter Perret included.

Sorry. Yeah, try Stewart.

'Baby's Got a Gun' is pretty great, especially for "Oh Lucinda (Love Becomes a Habit)" and "Why Don't You Kill Yourself." I don't own 'Serpents,' only the aforementioned 'Special View' comp that has half of it. Those tracks are excellent.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

YES

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

What are these 'Even Serpents Shine' and 'Baby's Got A Gun' LPs like then?

I think the former is my favourite OO album, the latter my least favourite, a bit wanky and "new wavey". Also check out the "Remains" album, Perrett stuff that predates punk. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Peter Perrett is one of the best rock lyricists ever - even if only ever sang about heroin and/or adultery.

Dadrock Holmes (Dada), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

And um... alienation.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

What I find weird is how many people know 'Another Girl Another Planet' but nothing else. I even read some journalist once saying that they were a classic example of a band who only had one great song. AGAP is great in its way but other songs of theirs hit me much harder.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Lovers of today" for one.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Never particularly felt that one myself. 'It's The Truth', 'Prisoners', 'Someone Who Cares', 'Why Don't You Kill Yourself' and 'Miles From Nowhere' are more my thing.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Search: "Why Don't You Kill Yourself?", last year's two-disc comp of their first three albums and all their singles. It's all pretty great!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Did someone call?

We have already got at least one perfectly good Only Ones thread you know!

Fantastic band obv.

Where's the Doc.?

Really must get those Peel Sessions some time.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I did really like the live video, but it didn't make me want to rush out and buy all the back-catalogue...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

".... even if only ever sang about heroin and/or adultery."

And his cat!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"i knoww yr somewherre out derre..."

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm warming to the Only Ones. I can feel it happening...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone compare the Libertines to the Only Ones?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Carl Barat for a kickoff.. (Pete's played with them a couple times)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That's Peter Perrett obviously. Pete Doherty has played with the libs more than once.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, well there you go. That's nice. Maybe I had heard that and it seeped into my subconscious, but it seems fitting.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Language Problem"!

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Best thing he ever wrote: "Doing drugs is one thing we have in common / That can help overcome the language problem."

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

He almost has too many great lines to quote

Dadrock Holmes (Dada), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone happen to know / have handy the lyrics to "You've Got To Pay"?

Just been trying to replay them in my head and decipher them and I've still got a lot of blanks and most of what I have got is probably wrong, but here goes anyway:

"I had to choose which one to lose
???? for they each had their use
It was so hard, (tell? tear?) them apart
Now you know you've got to get it right at the start

Indecision, lack of affection,
????? what I'm trying to say
If you want to be in love
You've got to pay and pay and pay

It was a gradual descent from the firmamant
I could tell by the tone of the letters you sent
What once was sacred is now filled with hatred
How could such love become dissipated?

I've learned my lesson now
I've learned it the hard way
If you want to be in love
You've got to pay and pay and pay

I've had enough of all this
Poison and decay
If you want to come face to face with love
You've got to pay and pay and pay"

Or something.
