Tell me about Lopazz

I first heard I Need Ya on a Sami Koivikko mix (recommended round here) and heard it played out (by Annie!) and *loved* it so bought Blood Don't Stand Still, which is also brilliant. Haven't heard anything else. Who is he? Where's he at? What next?

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Lopazz did a 12" inch for Get Physical (including "Take Me Home", the first track on the Get Physical 2nd Anniversay Mix), and also remixed Chelonis R Jones's "I Don't Know".

I've noticed there's at least two general versions of "I Need Ya" - the techier one on the Koivikko mix (I think that's "I Need Ya (High Time)") and then a more discoid one which I know is at least on the new Chicken Lips mix Clicks, Acid & Disco. From my memory of listening to the 12" in the record store I think the 3rd party remixes were pretty ace too, was there one by Captain Comatose...?

Haven't heard the original "Blood", but the Tiefschwarz remix may be the best one Tiefschwarz have done.

Stefan Eichinger runs german label 800achtspur, multimedia artist, etc
seems to be focusing mainly on his dance recordings these days, but still into all realms of media. the handful of singles he's put out so far are really his first recorded output as far as i can tell

that's about as much as i know/have gleaned from various sources

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

there is also a 12" called 'migracion' on get physical and a 'migracion' remix 12" with mixes by villalobos and luciano.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I may be getting my remixes mixed up, but I think the Tiefschwarz takes out the hook('Heart Don't Stop Beating. Blood Don't Stand Still' repeated between every line) and just brings it back in at the end. You should hear the original - I think I like it best. The doomy vocal reminds me of a Tribal record from years ago called 'So Get Up' and also a bit of 'Where U At', the Derrick L Carter tune.

So is it the same guy singing/speaking on both tunes? The I Need Ya vocal is pretty extraordinary. What about Migracion? Anybody heard that?

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

B-b-but the Tiefschwarz remix has those schizoid little electro snare/synth mash-up bits!!!! Best thing ever and I'm serious this time!!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Peace! I'm not knocking it. I shall rush home and give it my undivided attention tonight. Thanks for the info.

So, you were talking quite a lot about Get Physical & DJ T on the electro house thread. Is that comp a good place to start?

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah it's awesome. If you like Lopazz you will love it.

Even more amazing to think that about 80% of it is essentially the work of one group.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

migracion luciano remix is awesome!!!!!

if you listen to it, then it sort of sounds like what villalobos should have done on his remix.

but that remix 12" is well worth getting. also each tune is about 2 hrs long or something, i love seeing those vast expanses of black vinyl

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to get too far off topic, but a lot of Luciano's Cadenza material sounds like a conscious attempt to beat Villalobos at his own game (esp. "Funk Excursion") - it's all very fluid and funky. I'm kinda ambivalent about this direction actually, it sounds great but I always found Luciano's brittle tranciness to be one of his main attractions!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

But with "Funk Excursion", Luciano is winning (with assitance).

The release on FREUNDINNEN (lazy cut and paste) is the original ep right?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

To an extent Luciano's always been hyper-funky, but it was combined with that odd digitial stiffness (ha ha dialectic etc.), whereas "Funk Excursion" and the like kinda does away with the latter in order to maximise the former.

I agree it's fantastic, but I'm not sure that I want two Villalobosos rather than one Villalobos and one Luciano.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim, have you heard the Villalobos/Luciano Michael Jackson bootleg?

I love Luciano

rive.r (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tim, have you heard the Villalobos/Luciano Michael Jackson bootleg?"

No! Tell me more.

I love Luciano too. Actually is Omar reading this? I'd like to know why he dislikes Blind Behaviour so much. Or should we move this over to a Luciano thread?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Lucien n' Luciano - Blind Behaviour.

rive.r (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Lopazz is a group, rather than a he. From Nüremberg. This is what I recall from visiting the website after buying one of their records last year. "I Need Ya" original was on Freundinnen (2003) re-released last year on Output.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

lopazz is one guy - stephan eichinger but alex cortex helps him out with production.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought alex cortex was the vocalist. The Jackson bootleg is great (especially "starting something") - reasonably easy to find on seek.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently there is Lopazz "himself" AKA Stefan Eichinger, and Lopaz "incarnation", a three piece that also includes Mariella Landivar-Garcia and Jessuhs Mesud.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The migracion original is actually really nice. Got more of an organic deep-housey feel than the remixes and a great bassline that doesn't last long enough (although that's the point).

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, I much prefer the original to the remixes 12", which seems to get a lot more attention. It's out of this world!

Jena (JenaP), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll still take the remixes - partly because I love Villalobos' remix work which I prefer (albeit peaks of his original work = peaks of his remix work) to his originals - mainly because I prefer the differing textures brought into his remixes - for example see the "Listen to the Hiss" remix which is astonishing.

And even when ignoring the remixes, I'll still choose "Take Me Home" over Migracion

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
Anybody heard his latest release on Compost Black Label

Tracklisting:

Side A:
1. Lopazz "Child Of Dance"
2. Lopazz "Estrella"

Side B:
1. Lopazz "U+I"
2. Lopazz "2 Shy"

Opinions/YSI most appreciated

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Label website also mentions that he is working on an album.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Not mad on the Compost release I have to say, it's oddly technoey, just doesn't really cut it for me.

I ended up loving the Black Label 12" - 2 Shy = Lopazz's take on Morrissey.

His latest 12" "Ciegos" is pretty damn fantastic on first listen" "Ciegos" is in the style of Migracion, while "Burned Down Houses" is another shot at the Freundinnen ep sound.
