Piero Umiliani

never really paid that much attention to all those easy tempo/right tempo italian dudes, but i heard the umiliani comp, musicaelettronica, and...its totally amazing. its very different to the usual sexiloungepartie stuff i'd heard before, its a lot heavier and electronic, some of the tracks are languid hasisch cloud early 70s cosmic eurogroove, and others are jittery and bloopy analgoue spacefunk.

this, along with the christian bruhn stuff, seems to be a great trippy midpoint , of lounge, prog, and disco,

so what else is like this? alessandro alessandroni? nino ferrer? nora orlandi? enrico simonetti? i'm still dubious about a lot of umilianis stuff, as it doesnt compare that greatly to this, so, im sort of wary

I'm not sure if you'd do so well to look for another composer in order to find music similar to that on this compilation, as almost all of these compilations feature a narrow and heavily curated subset of what's often an extremely wide-ranging body of work. Much of the recent marketing, including the "sexiloungepartie"-type thing, is almost entirely revisionist. From what you describe, you may like the "Future Sound of Lesiman" compilation, also on Easy/Right Tempo. It's fairly dark-sounding, experimental and quite rhythmic. You can occasionally find volumes of the original "High Tension" albums on Vedette records that were used on that compilation - the "Here and Now" volumes (also used) seem to be more difficult and expensive. At one point, Right/Easy Tempo were thinking of reissuing Mr. Umiliani's "Tra Scienza e Fantascienza" album, some of which was used on the compilation you have - I don't know whether that will still happen or not, but hopefully it will. They had released the entire "L'Uomo e la Citta'" record (some of which, again, was used on the compilation you have), so you may wish to look at that one, also. ConTempo Edizioni Musicali in Italy may still have copies of the old LPs "Situazioni" and "Riflessi" by Rino de Filippi, reissued on the Edi-Pan label - both are beautiful and have a unique sound with arrangements of synthesizer, piano and small band with rhythm section.

i just bought a vinyl original of that Tra Scienza e Fantascienza album! was released under the name Moggi?

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think so - it was one of his pseudonyms, in any case. Do you like it?

Pangolino again, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

haven't played it yet! need to convert it to mp3 when i go back to my parents, dont have record player with me at the moment

three years pass...

Gareth seem to be asking about Umiliani's moog comp in the 1st post. Kinda seems like the answer is "buy more Bruce Haak", which has probably clarified itself at this point.

'Pangolino again' was OTM completely in his response though.

Anyway...

I went through a phase about 10 years ago just buying Easy Tempo comps and digesting them as is, only getting into the Bossa Nova stuff mostly.

Today I'm knee deep in a HUGE campaign of watching all the films and collecting the soundtracks in complete form best I can.

My 2 fave composers now are Piero Piccioni and Bruno Nicolai. Their harmonic approaches resonate with me more than others (including Morricone, not to write him off though).

Just watched 10th Victim, which had an overkill of Spiral Waltz by Piccioni and Italian singer Mina (who I also love).

I have Camille 2000 sitting here from Netflix waiting for me to indulge in, if nothing more than to here Piccioni's soundtrack in context.

I finally watched Camille 2000 myself just a few weeks ago for the same reason. Piccioni's contribution still seemed the best thing about it. Not that that was unlikely for such a stunning soundtrack.

I remember hearing a Umiliani disc via mp3 called Musica dell'era tecnologica which was also pretty great for bloopy electronics, but fairly dark in tone.

Piero Piccioni = utterly underrated ueber-genius.

Just planning for this evening a marathon of bad/great 70's Italian horror movies: the immortal psychotronic classic "Nuda per Satana" is on the list!

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 13 November 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

I have nardini's 'catch that man' from Barry 7's Connectors comp, which is moogy. That's the extent of my collection. I don't think he scored movies, did he?

For all the rockists who bashed stereolab for abandoning the kraut rock blueprint, I really think many of the chord changes they adopted in their later years came from Piccioni.

I just got some of the Fumo di Londra sdtk last night and was again please. Between that and Un Italiano in America, I have two more to add to my viewing wishlist.

Hearing Lady Magnolia in a Magnum ice cream ad a few years ago blew my mind. Also I have a funny feeling Air have all his albums...

Manah-Manah is actually taken from "Svezia, Inferno e Paradiso", a classic "Mondo Cane"-style mockumentary about the perilous flatteries of life in Sweden (drugs, long hair, emancipated women!).
