Serious question: What kind of music does George Bush like?

I don't remember hearing him talk about it. The guy was in college in the late 60s and partied his way through the 70s, music must have impacted his life at some point.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously?
I bet he likes Willie Nelson.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I somehow don't see him as a big music fan.

Jena (JenaP), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember reading something where he said that he liked the beatles (logical enough considering his demographic) until they "turned weird" (circa revolver, and again logical enough considering HIM generally).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"White Lines" Flash and Melle Mel

Austin Again (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably "Kill 'em all" - Metallica

bg, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

For the stars and strips
"murder license" - xinlisupreme

mario, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

completely blatant, random plug: i once asked stephen stills this question, and he seemed to agree with eisbar et al:

What kind of music does he think President Bush listens to after a hard day in the situation room? “I don’t think he does,” Stills declared. “I think it’s apparent that he doesn’t—at least, not voluntarily. He may listen to hymns in church.” A few wry seconds later, he is quipping that Bush “probably thought The Beatles were cool at first, until they turned all Commie on him.”

swvl (vozick), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, CCR, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, etc.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(Okay. Sadly, I added Steely Dan to the list myself.)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

um, to be utterly prosaic: i thought he's sort of a casual fan of contemporary country music

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

who do you think ripped and loaded the files onto his ipod...Laura or one of "the girls?" ...are they all legal?

if he choked on a pretzel I can't imagine he'd have much luck with the i-tunes interface.

mono.mono (mono.mono), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm...CCR, eh?

It ain't me, It ain't me...

(Bush smirks while listening)

Keith C (kcraw916), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bushes watched Life Aquatic??? Possibly because GWB is a Ghostbusters fan.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

People who partied their way through the 70s aren't necessarily going to be impacted by music. I mean, in all likelyhood who was impacted more by "Hey Ya" -- fratboys and sorority girls, or nerds in front of computers like us. When he hears an oldie but goodie on the radio, he probably says something like, "Oh, this is such a good song," but I doubt it goes much deeper than that.

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i could see some overlap in tastes b/w dubya and homer simpson. ergo, i betcha dubya's got a grand funk railroad or foghat rekkid hidden away somewhere.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"dubya, do we have yer permission to JAM?"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I wasn't saying that music made more of an impact on people during that time, just that he would have been in a lot of situations where the (then) current music was playing, and I wondered what rubbed off.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i bet he's got impeccable music taste. the devil does have all the best tunes, after all.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i still hold fast on the belief that dubya was into the grand funk railroad back in the day. IT MAKES SENSE, if you think about it.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure he's one of those passive folks who liked "whatever was on the radio." I don't think he has the intellectual capital to distinguish an aesthetic like from dislike.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you think Bush, in times of marital strife, as ever sifted through he and Laura's respective record collections and said something like, "We have nothing in common. Just look at our records. Glenn Campbell, the Doodletown Piper Gang . . . and look at her records! They suck!"

Mark, you're right that you'd think something would have stuck with him. Maybe he likes Donna Summer.

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Captain and Tennille, Pablo Cruise, Seals and Croft, England Dan and John Ford Coley

Dadrock Holmes (Dada), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, I TELL YOU!!

just LOOK @ 'em, and tell me that a drunken/coked-up 70s rich brat like dubya would NOT love 'em!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a rumor going around that he enjoyed Sigur Ros....

PB, Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Derek Bailey, Albert Ayler, Keiji Haino, The Boredoms, Coil

Dadrock Holmes (Dada), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

If I had to guess, I'd imagine stuff like Patsy Cline and the Everly Brothers.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have time to look for the interview (though it was widely reported elsewhere), but during the '00 campaign he said his favorite band was ZZ Top.

from http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,7-1445913,00.html

Hill continues: “He’s the President, and he’s from Texas and he asked us. We knew him from when he was Governor of Texas. It’s my understanding that he listens to our music on the big plane, on Air Force One. He’s a very nice person. We talked about baseball when we met. He doesn’t tell me how to play bass guitar or sing and I don’t tell him about politics. We have an understanding there.”

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

That AP article was really interesting, especially w/r/t Bush's reading habits.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"If I had to guess, I'd imagine stuff like Patsy Cline and the Everly Brothers."

Supposedly, during the 2000 campaign, a reporter asked Dubya what was his favorite song was, and he replied without hesitation, "'Wake Up Little Susie' by BUDDY HOLLY"

Of course, he probably also believes that Susie and her boy really did fall asleep at the movies.

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

gDub likes Bush. but who doesn't?

irrigation can save your people (irrigation can save your peopl), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Actual answer, according to recent AP feature = Creedence, Aaron Neville, Van Morrison, George Jones, Kenny Chesney and Alan Jackson.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

D'oh - already linked. Sorry.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet he likes Willie Nelson.

Willie Nelson is a liberal. George W. Bush would never like something by a liberal.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

so is john fogerty, geir (shit, fogerty even CAMPAIGNED for john kerry!) yet dubya likes creedence!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Dubya may be more open minded than his most devoted voters then...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I've seen something about his Willie fandom before (maybe Texas Monthly). But it's kind of a law that all Texas politicians have to kneel before Willie.

rosie, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

According to my 30th Anniversary Edition of Sold American, he likes Kinky Friedman - even had him as an overnight guest at the White House! (Wonder if he smoked a j on the roof, like Willie Nelson did back in the Carter years...)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's tempting to link him to country / redneck music, but then that's just his image. I bet those times he was crazy on booze and coke it was the high-class stuff. Likewise, I bet there was a chunk of "classier" music in the Bush household. I'm partly saying this to remind myself that he's not a downhome boy, he's a preppy prince in a ludicrously-wealthy dynasty.

Acme 2, Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I read that he likes the Everley Brothers on the aint-it-cool news website.

Popli Kid, Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

He's a HUGE Mekons fan. He picked up Jon Langford's guitar at a gig sometime in '98 and played an endearingly awful two-note solo.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm still holding out for the grand funk railroad.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I see him as liking sort of middle-of-the road boomer rock and some contemporarty country. Stones, CCR, Garth Brooks, etc.

OTOH, I cna't believe John Kerry listens to pop music at all -- he strikes me as a standards and classical guy,

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I do not believe he likes contemporary country music as claimed. I think it possible that he doesn't dislike the Everly Brothers, but that was just safe packaging, mostly. I do think he is a cultural product of the mid-70s and that some of its music rubbed off on him.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Lest we forget:

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Thursday, 24 March 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd imagine him paying lipservice to David Allan Coe, but it's not showing up. With all of his radical political stances, it's still surprising that he's such a milquetoast in his taste in music. Even if he didn't actually like Coe, it would seem that he'd play to his base with a winking reference to him.

badgerminor (badgerminor), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I am simply stunned that no one has suggested Jimmy Buffet.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bushes watch first-run movies once or twice a week. They screened "Meet the Parents" for British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife, Cherie, at Camp David.

This makes me very happy for some reason.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Certainly, it is an endearing image.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Actual answer, according to recent AP feature = Creedence, Aaron Neville, Van Morrison, George Jones, Kenny Chesney and Alan Jackson.

Creedence, eh? Yeah, I bet "Fortunate Son" really strikes a chord with him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet Elton John and maybe Aerosmith. I find it highly unlikely that he would like Jimmy Buffett.
