I was just reading that they are something of a hot prospect and they are about 18 or something.

Anybody know anymore? Their homepage is pretty ugly http://www.infinitycat.com/byop.html

I've only heard one song and I didn't like it one bit-contrived, yelpy vocals and standard-issue rock clatter. But maybe it's just me

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard the single 'damn damn leash' a few times, and it didn't seem to live up to the little ripple of hype they've been generating - not bad, but not anything to shout about. aiming for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, not quite reaching.

Lee F# (fsharp), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

my pal just saw them at SXSW and said they weren't that hot. Just one more band with a silly-ass name.

So we should expect them on the cover of NME any day now?

Looking at the pix, I hate them. I can't help it.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking at the pix, I wonder where the brick wall is?

M Nolan (Severian), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

seemed like a kinda weird thing for XL........

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

They kind of caught my interest, I've heard one single on the radio, but it wasn't an 'oh my God that's brilliant' moment, but I'd be happy to see what they come up with.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Has XL signed them or something?

If so that's a pretty odd signing.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

they signed young heart attack, so nothing surprises me now.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, they're doing an instore at the talbot rd rough trade this saturday. fancy a west london, anna?

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

They are pretty, and they sound like a less-frightening Yeah Yeah Yeahs. An A&R no-brainer.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Amen to Colin, add in the youth Factor and I see these guys on The O.C. in mere months.

I am not frightened by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This is because I am very hard.

Be Your Own Pet are playing Glastonbury.

The b-side "Electric Shake" sounds fantastic even though it's not innovative in any sense. I quite like her disgusted "YUGH" that she does at the end of the chorus. I've been listening to it a lot lately on a mixtape my friend made for me (who used to be in a band with Jemina at the Rock 'N' Roll Girls' Camp they mention on their page but had a fallout with her because Jemina talked trash about her...some mediocre teenage dilemma).

So bonus points taken off for Jemina being mean to my lovely friend...who (referring to aforementioned friend) I don't think has the capability to harm anyone since she's so sweet.

I saw the video for Damn Damn Leash on MTV2 and liked it. Cool (and weird) video, the song seemed pretty good and the girl is TEH CUTE. But that probably makes me a dirty old man if she's only about 16 or something. I'm only 21 mind you.

I've been listening to the album a couple of times today and all the songs pretty much sounds the same(in a bad way). It's just simple garage rock. Nothing that stands out. But I do have a weakness for female rock voices and Jemina has a pretty wicked voice. Very similar to Karen O but obviously not as good.

I'll give the album a 6.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Saturday, 14 January 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the album is not a big deal, but 'Adventure' is a song you can fall in love with. Or I did, at least.

I really like the new EP.

65% Yeah Yeah Yeahs

So it's like Matthew Sweet, then.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 14 September 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

i saw them at bonnaroo. more energy than songs. respectable chops. the girl singer's cute and wore a billy idol t-shirt.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 14 September 2006 03:11 (nineteen years ago)

i think the only thing of note about this band is that the singer is probably the rock and roll girls camp alumna to "make it."

Godfrzej Ljang (godfrzej), Thursday, 14 September 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

"Adventure" is a great, great song, even if it is 80% No Doubt. The rest of their corpus is capable but pedestrian.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 14 September 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

Not to just continue the list of bands with chick singers, but my impression was just Letters to Cleo with more crunch and better instincts. In other words, sorta great.

Also IMO "October, 1st Account" is the standout, the tracks do get samey.

William Ryan Stuart Hamilton (Stagger Lee), Thursday, 14 September 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

didn't the drummer just quit? guess he wasn't capable enough

pinder (pinder), Thursday, 14 September 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

Totally obsessed with "Damn Damn Leash" again today after many years away from it.

Also, I recognize almost nobody at all from the first act of this thread.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Sunday, 20 March 2022 09:33 (four years ago)

“Adventure” is a jam and I still hum it to myself occasionally. Great to read they’re all in good places and happy playing together again! But the story headline is wrong, no? ‘Band returns after surviving sleazy indie’ and then references the Burger Records mess as an example of the shit Pearl had to put up with in general, but BYOP were never signed to Burger. Right? If I were XL, my solicitor would be having a word with the Grauniad about now.
