Is it just me, or is this the greatest commercial radio station around? Not even so much what they play (like any hip-hop station, the playlist can be kind of small sometimes), but the on-air personalities, the local, human feel that's lacking in so many Clear Channel-era stations. The Funkmaster Flex show is off the chain, as is the Throwback at Noon with Mr. C, and the in-studio freestyles late at night. Angie Martinez, Sunny -- they're just ... likeable. And I like the way they'll actually make an on-the-spot decision to play some brand new track from a just-under-the-radar artist rather than having everything cleared by some programmer.

I miss Starr and Buckwild :(

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Supposedly they're on Power 105 now, but I don't know when.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

dud.

I get so jealous of NYers for having a station like that. I mean they're probably not perfect and they definitely fan the flames of controversy in an unsavory way sometimes, but the idea of being able to hear live interviews and world premieres of new tracks on a daily basis like that makes me salivate.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess that appeals to me to some degree, and I dont mean to get all 2nd city ego trip on em, but B96 and WGCI take care of me pretty well in Chicago as far as new music goes. Of course I'd take them any day over the joke of radio broadcasting going on in central Ohio-why-o.

deej., Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i mean i love my local station too, but to be in a real epicenter of activity like that would be cool.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

does chicago still have 106.3 JAMZ?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck em. I'm nyawker enough to say, we don't need this kind of nonsense.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i only ever hear the radio when im in taxis. so i only get the christian station, or arabic station, or smooth jazz

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, actually, that raises a good point. As a typical Jersey-ite, I spend lots of time in the car, which makes Hot 97 a trusty friend. Otherwise, though, I don't bother.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud. Their playlist is awful, and they *do not* play under the radar artists when they feel like it. Funk Flex is an arrogrant bore, and the payola thing is out of control

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Star & Bucwild are on from 6-10 a.m.

Adam Harrison-Friday, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

absolute shit...pathetic playlist, annoying DJs (Funkmaster is sooo fucking stale at this point)....they play "under-the-radar" artists, do they? Was The Game considered "under-the-radar" four months ago? The only redeeming quality is the occasional throwback, other than that Hot97 is just sowing the seeds of an increasingly banal hip-hop culture....black people need to come up with something else

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(I realize they have, and am being facetious) Hot97 would never champion, say, Dalek, MF Doom, DM and Jemini, Madlib, Roots Manuva, The Perceptionists, or any other black artist currently pushing things forward without the monetary support of their major label...so however "under the radar" the artists they play may be, Hot97 will always leave out many of the innovators, instead preferring the money-makers

loved it in the '80s.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

mix 102.7 is where it's at these days!

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

jesus they played a little grime and raggaeton, didn't they, isn't that enough for you nerds!?

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

No. The streets are feeling the Perceptionist's agitprop and Hot 97 won't give it to them wtf.

deej., Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

space is the place you are a f00l.

hot97 is awesome. the quality of stuff they play comes in fits and spurts -- last fall through a month or two ago it was crazy boring (lots of shitty singles getting play) but it's started picking up again. last friday they had bleek on freestyling, and he was great. flex put him on "1 thing" for about 20 minutes. totally fun.

oh and i heard m.i.a. on h97 on friday, too. they played "amazon." this was on flex's show.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and the dancehall sets -- normally on saturdays -- are totally my favorites. so great.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hot97 would never champion, say, Dalek, MF Doom, DM and Jemini, Madlib, Roots Manuva, The Perceptionists"

maybe because none of these artists are actually hip hop?

scg, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

What does that mean? (not that i agree w/ SitP obviously)

deej., Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hot97 would never champion, say, Dalek, MF Doom, DM and Jemini, Madlib, Roots Manuva, The Perceptionists"

And you can thank God for that.
