Killing Joke: Live?

When were these guys last in America? Also, are they any good live? I just can't imagine much of their sound translating from the album to the stage. Alex, I'm looking to you for some wisdom...

Last tour was for the most recent album as far as I know. I saw them, a little over a year ago I think, November 2003 maybe? It was great!! They sounded like Killing Joke. Geordie's guitar sound was bright and snappy. Jaz bellowed and prowled the stage. They played for a pretty long time. It was good fun.

here's where I posted about it: Killing Joke at Webster Hall 10/22/03

(and Alex's lengthy review is of course at the top of the thread)

Haven't seen them for a loooooong time, but they used to be absolutely amazing live.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Only saw them on their first two NAmerican tours, and they were jawdropping incredible, especially that first show at Bookies in Detroit. Lost interest in them after the third album, until very recently again, but didn't see them last time out.

At the risk of incurring the ire of many an ILM'r who is evidently dog tired of hearing me prattle on about them, all I'll say is that they were last here in 2003, and plan to be back before the end of this year (hold not thy breath, however). I just saw them in February in the UK and they were blinding as always.

Let's put it this way, EVERY. OTHER. BAND. SUCKS. compared to Killing Joke. Clear enough?

I saw Killing Joke open for Joy Division at the London Lyceum in February 1980 - both bands were terrific but I remember thinking KJ were better. They had a fire eater on stage with them! This was soon after their debut 10" was released - does anyone know how many of these were pressed? I played mine almost to death.

I had trouble getting into their Minneapolis show a couple years ago, though I really liked that last record.

I still think Requiem can heal the sick and raise the dead, etc.

More Goth Than Your Grandmother (Bimble), Sunday, 17 May 2009 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

They're one of the better goth bands, right Alex?

Go eat a giant, greasy cock

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 17 May 2009 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

That's not very goth of you, Alex.

Everybody Wants To Shag King Boy Pato (King Boy Pato), Monday, 18 May 2009 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

Speaking of Killing Joke live, their new live box is out now! (yeah, like any of you fuckers care)

Alex in NYC, Monday, 18 May 2009 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

Mr. Que, Monday, 18 May 2009 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

That's not even worth a rimshot.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 18 May 2009 18:39 (seventeen years ago)

Mr. Que, Monday, 18 May 2009 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

Can't fault a man for trying.

two years pass...

There's been more and more official live albums and quasi-bootlegs put out lately - I just noticed "Live at Hammersmith Apollo", for example. Other than the crucial "Ha!", what's the critical stuff for one who honours the fire?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 2 October 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

Where is Alex in NYC when you need him?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 23:48 (fourteen years ago)

They're all on Spotify. I really like Ha! That's the definitive version of Pssyche for me.

I haven't heard the Hammersmith one yet but I was at that gig and it was fantastic.

There were a couple of middle aged dudes by me right at the front who were clearly E'd out of their heads. They'd dance really manically to each song but every time Coleman said something apocalyptic one of them would say, 'Can I have an E please Bob?*' in a strangulated voice and his mate would start giggling in a slightly nervous way.

It was pretty funny. It looked like they were having an intense night. I might have an E next time I go and see them.

I read that as "I might have an E next time I go and see those middle-aged dudes"....

Amira, Queen of Creativity (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 20:04 (ten years ago)

oh that's a shame, they were amazing here a couple of months ago. mostly played stuff off the (great) new album and it was pretty impressive to see everyone being super into it. hot fucking gig though, three songs in and i looked like a man who had just fallen into a swimming pool.
